    3. I am looking for information on the S.S. Palatia, supposedly arrived in Halifax (CAD) Apr 26, 1899. On board was my grandfather: Simeon Zurkowski (approx 31 yrs of age), his wife, Euphrosinia (Francis/Frazyna) (approx 25 yrs), their three children, Anna (4), Michael (2) and Dmetro (1). I located the names while doing a search in Hamburg.de - link to your roots. However this does not tell me the ship name or date leaving Hamburg. In a text book "Dictionary of Ukrainian Canadian Biography by Vladimir J. Kaye, he states that they arrived on the Palatia - Apr 26, 1899 however I can not get confirmation on this. I have researched the ship and can not find anything about its arrival to Halifax during that time. My next step is to check at the archives bldg unless some of you can offer other suggestions. A manifest would be really appreciated!!! :-) Thanks

Reessing (Russing?) According to another source I have, there should be 630 Halifax passengers on board. Another 1,060 passengers went on to New York. For the Halifax list I only see the List Number (which number should be obvious on the microfilmed manifest) and Captain name in the "Remarks" field, so this is a good thing. Often the German lists are fairly dark (oxidized before the filming in 1949), but there is no "dark" or "faded manifest" mentioned in Remarks. If a manifest is dark it usually only poses a problem for a transcriber, should anyone ever transcribe it, but as you know exactly who you are looking for, you shouldn't have a problem even if it is a little dark. You said you have already researched the ship, but we have her description and voyage history here http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/descriptions/ShipsP-Q.html She made two trips to Halifax, 1898 and 1899 on HAPAG's Hansa Line Service . . . then continued to New York as regular Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfarhrt Aktien-Gesellschaft (Hamburg-America Line). Those two trips were the only calls to Canadian ports for that ship. The passenger manifest is on Microfilm at the Library & Archives of Canada [LAC], in Ottawa. The Ships are placed on the reel, in order of arrival. You can borrow this reel on an Inter Library Loan [ILL]. You can find the details for this procedure at this LAC Genealogy Research URL http://www.collectionscanada.ca/ill/index-e.html You are also able to ILL from Ottawa, to libraries in the US, and outside North America. These microfilms contain arrivals from ALL ports, they are not indexed. The LDS do also have copies of this microfilm, their number LDS number 0889439 ~ 1899 ~ port of Halifax I see you have a Canadian email address. Here find a list of institutions in Canada who also have copies of this microfilm. You may have one close by http://www.collectionscanada.ca/genealogy/022-903-e.html Good Luck Sue -- TheShipsList Website http://www.theshipslist.com/
