Irene, The Australian coastal steamer "Ly-ee-Moon" was wrecked on Green Cape, just south of Eden, on the night of 29/30 May 1886 with heavy loss of life, variously given as between 41 and 86, and only 15 survivors. It was one of Australia's worst shipwrecks of the day so there should be plenty of information available. Built as a paddle steamer in 1859 and named after one of the passages into Hong Kong the "Ly-ee-Moon" was one of the fastest ships afloat when completed being capable of 17 knots. Intended as an opium runner she later served as a blockade runner in the American Civil War before being sold to Australasian Steam Navigation Company by which time she had been converted to a screw steamer. At the time of her loss she was en route from Port Phillip to Sydney.
