Canadian listers, To remind you, May 16th is Canada Census day. http://www50.statcan.ca/census2006/ I suppose that this is a little off-topic for our list, however I'm sure that all of you in the genealogy community are aware of the prolonged battle for the release to the National Archives of the post 1901, and subsequent Census records. For anyone who doesn't know, the battle was finally won, but this is what has prompted me to send this email to the list because that decision affects this census. read on First, I was fascinated to read that we'll be able to file the census online . . wow! http://www22.statcan.ca/ccr_r002_e.htm Second, there is a "Genealogists' corner" http://www22.statcan.ca/ccr10/ccr10_000_e.htm Lots of good reading there, but for the sake of of all future genealogists in your families, please all make sure that you remember to select the "yes" box in question number 53. [extract below] __________________________________ 53 The Statistics Act guarantees the confidentiality of your census information. Only if you mark "YES" to this question will your personal information be made public, 92 years after the 2006 Census. If you mark "NO" or leave the answer blank, your personal information will never be made publicly available. Does this person agree to make his/her 2006 Census information available for public release in 2098 (92 years after the census)? Yes No Beginning with the 2006 Census, people in Canada will be asked to consent to public access to their census records 92 years after the census. For those who give explicit permission, Statistics Canada will transfer their information to Library and Archives Canada in 2098, which in turn will make it publicly available.
