It was a regular port of call on European services to west and southern Africa and E Coast South America. Even for passengers moving between the Portuguese territories of Madeira and Goa they would likely have changed ship at Lisbon. Other connecting ports could be Cadiz, Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa - or for Brits, back in the UK. David
