Hi List, Can anyone give me an idea how long it would take for a sailing ship to make its way from Liverpool along the Welsh coast? In particular, given unfavourable winds, could a ship still be off the north coast of Wales a week after departing Liverpool? With thanks, Jo Mitchell Geelong, Australia http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishchurches/
Greetings, A week you say? Seems reasonable, not desireable perhaps but any 'unfavourable winds' would be a situation where the amount of sail would be gradually/rapidly reduced, anchored, if a safe place was available. Suppose that a sudden 'blow' tore the sails from the yards. Spare sails would have to be got from the storage and mounted, assuming that the yards and masts and its own rigging were sound. Essentially all repairs to the sails and rigging had to be performed on board, depending on the size of the vessel, crew size may be very small around 2 to 30 men, again assuming that the crew are hale and hearty and not nursing broken bones or torn muscles.......... finger nails ripped off was common!
