With convict transports there was the John 1 ( 1) meaning its first voyage in 1827 . Then comes John 1 (2) ,2nd voyage of same ship . Pretty sure John 4 would be a different ship Maybe some info in http://www.convictcentral.com/ The National Library has started digitising old newspapers. They have the Sydney Gazette 1803- 1844 on line http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home Aus-convicts would probably be a better mailing list for convict ship info Have you checked http://users,bigpond.net.au/convicts ?
