Hallo, Jim, I've just received the June 2008 Pambu which has an item "Jim Burton an enthusiastic collector .... South Sea Islands:" I was going to suggest Pambu's indexes to their material on Santo, but expect you've combed them already. Have you tried the NSW State Archives? Their online "Archives in Brief" http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/archives_in_brief_1_365.asp lists and describes some likely sources, mostly printed but includes Ann Marie Warner's online "Mariners & ships in Australian waters" which lists the arrival of the Mambare in March, May & July 1902. You might like to contact her for advice on departures. You've probably checked also the Pacific Islands Monthly Cumulative Index 1930-1945 Paterson AB article "Sir J Burns & New Hebrides" in Pacific Islands Monthly May 1939 pp 39-51. I have reasonable sets of PIM , Islands Business & Pacific Islands Report for about 1990 to 1998. Are you likely to be interested in any from this period? Free eexcept for freight charges from South Australia? Best wishes, Bess Flores -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Jim Burton Sent: Monday, 30 June 2008 8:39 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [TSL] 'MAMBARE' out of Sydney to South Pacific Islands AB 'Banjo' Paterson travelled on the Burns Philp Steamer MAMBARE on a round trip to the South Pacific Islands departing Sydney late 26 May 1902. Also aboard were 12 Australian ex-Boer War Veterans travelling to take up Burns Philp land allotments on South Santo in the then New Hebrides. In researching the names of those 14 men of whom 11 stayed in Santo and 3 returned to Sydney, I'd like to obtain a copy of the MAMBARE's Passenger List for that particular voyage of the MAMBARE. Can anyone advise me where to look next? If there are any 'Banjo' Patterson enthusiasts out there, upon your request, I will send you a photocopy of his article about his trip as published in the SMH September 1902. Hopefully one good deed deserves a ready response.
