A very big thank you to all who replied to my enquiry. I think it's worth recounting the background and what I've now found. The passenger I'm interested in left San Francisco (according to his passport) on 10 Mar 1939, and there was reason to believe that he travelled on the President Coolidge. His passport was also stamped in Shanghai (we think -- wish I could read Chinese <g>), Hong Kong on 8 Apr 1939 and Singapore on 13 Apr 1939. We assumed the whole trip was on the President Coolidge -- never make assumptions <g>! There are some inconsistencies. For example, his passport suggests he left SFrisco on 10 Mar, but Allan Jordan has kindly sent me a clipping from the New York Times of 6 Mar 1939 saying (if I interpret it correctly) that the President Coolidge would leave SFrisco on 9 Mar, calling at Honolulu (on 15 Mar), Yokohama (24 Mar), Kobe (25 Mar), Shanghai (28 Mar) and Hong Kong (31 Mar). These dates are different from those in the passport, suggesting that he went on a different ship (I think that's unlikely) or the Coolidge was delayed along the way. And Marj Kohli adds that, according to the LA Times, the Coolidge left SFrisco on 7 Mar -- that's the third possible date! Assuming that my man changed ships at Hong Kong, the only likely ship I could locate in the Singapore newspapers was the Conte Verde, which arrived in Singapore (from Hong Kong) on 13 Apr. I can find no passenger list in the Singapore press so I can't be absolutely sure my man was on that ship. As an aside, press reports at the time tell the story of a crew member who fell overboard from the Conte Verde on that voyage. It was about an hour before he was missed and the captain then turned around to look for him. After 4 hours in the water, he was found!! The passengers signed a letter of commendation for the captain! So I've made some progress (thanks to you guys) although I am still working on assumptions, albeit pretty reasonable assumptions. If anyone can pinpoint any further the dates for the Coolidge's voyage, that would be great. Thanks again, people.
