    3. Hei Lars, I think I can help a bit. First, this part needs some interpretation .... >Ship: Canada Star, via Xania (Oslo) > >Date: 9 March 1923 >From: Trondheim Norway I will use Gustav Lundblad from Bräcke, as an example .... There was no such ship. The clue is there though ... from Trondheim he would have gone by train ..via Xania.. = via Kristiana, as you write, these days called Oslo. The next clue is "Canada Star" which I break down to "destined to Canada ... on a White Star Line vessel." Not sure whether the date 9th March 1923 refers to the Trondheim departure or the Kristiania departure, but the Wilson Line "feeder ship" SPERO (2) departed from Kristiania on 1923-03-09, for Hull, England. Ahh I see now where you got your information, from the Norgwegian Digitalarkivet 09.03.1923 Gustav Lundblad ug Jordbruksarbeider m 1897 Bræcke Jæmtland Canada Star via Xania Cash a Pas Østersund 5/3-23 ... Canada is in Destination column, and Star is in [Shipping] Line column. In the Ship column, we find via Xania with no vessel named. Quite often White Star Line was indicated in those records as "Hvide Stjerene Linien," or just "Stjerne Linien." It took about 2 days to get to Hull from Kristiania. From Hull, he (and the others) would have taken a train to Liverpool, a trip of just a few hours. In Liverpool, they may have had to wait a day or two at an emigrant hotel for example, then they would have boarded the White Star Line transatlantic ship. Ship Name Departure Information Arrival Information Shipping Line REGINA Liverpool, England 1923-03-16 / Queenstown, Ireland 1923-03-20 Halifax, N.S. 1923-03-25 / Portland, ME (WSD) Dominion Line and White Star-Dominion Line This trip fits very well with the Trondheim departure date, so he landed at Halifax and then would have to take the train again, to Ontario. Such a long trip and so sad that he died so young. The reason for an east coast arrival was because the St. Lawrence river was still frozen so early in the season, so they couldn't reach Quebec from the sea. This is where it more difficult to explain. During the years 1919 to 1924 Canada did not maintain the usual "big sheet" passenger lists, but rather a single manifest page for each passenger, called Form 30A. More information here ... http://www.theshipslist.com/Research/canadarecords.htm#1924 Other than ordering the alphebetical microfilm reels to find all the people below, if you have an Ancestry subscription, the original records HAVE been scanned and indexed, by Ancestry. I do have a subscription and can confirm what I wrote above Canada, Ocean Arrivals (Form 30A), 1919-1924 Name: Gustaf Lundblad Gender: Male Estimated birth year: abt 1897 Birth Place: Sweden Age: 26 Date of Arrival: 25 Mar 1923 Port of Arrival: Halifax, Nova Scotia Port of Departure: Trondhjem, Norway Ship Name: Regina In addition to what you already know, the card says he is going ... to friend, Charles Bowan, 48 S[outh?]. Water street, Port Arthur, Ontario. I would suspect that Gustav and fellow travellers were hired as "Contract Labourers," maybe at the Paper Mill ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Arthur,_Ontario Charles Bowan was probably the Agent who hired them. The emigration of Contract Labourers was against the law in the United States, but it was not illegal in Canada.
