Hi Nan You should try the Clip website http://www.crewlist.org.uk/data/vesselsalpha.php The Clip database includes every British registered ship from 1855 to the early 1950s with official numbers 1 to 200000. When you find your vessel it will also provide you with links to other sources of info .. Their are 3 entries for Joseph Somes but none for Joseph Virgo .
