    1. [TSL] The barque "Thomas Hughes" arr. Melb 23 Nov 1844; insubordination on the high seas

    3. Hi everyone, The barque "Thomas Hughes" sailed from Liverpool on 18th July 1844 and arrived Port Phillip, Melbourne on Nov 23 1844. Captain Butler brought 3 seamen, named Pope, Evans and O'Hea/O'Hare to be charged with insubordination on the high seas. I am wondering if seaman POPE is possibly my ancestor John Richard POPE b. 1823 Bristol, Gloucestershire, UK. The timeframe is right; he m. Jane Morgan on 13 July 1846 in Melbourne, Vic. Bapt of son in 1848 has his occupation listed as sailor; sons baptism and death cert 1849 & 1851 give occupation as mariner. From then on he was miner or digger. (All in Vic.) Does anyone have more info re this ship and would records give POPEs christian name/s (or even list him/crew at all) or has anyone come across my man please? Cheers, Andrea.

    3. Hi Andrea, You might want to consider joining our sister list, MARINERS, to ask about seamen. http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Occupations/Mariners.html Mariners Website http://www.mariners-l.co.uk/ On TheShipsList, there are two items from the Sydney Shipping Gazette about that vessel in 1844, about 3/4 of the way down the page, added in the paper as if by after-thought, about mid December. http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/au1844d.htm ... unfortunately, no discussion about "Pope."
