Hi List The Australian Dictionary of Biography entry for David ALLAN (1780-1852) mentions that in July 1819 David ALLAN, his wife Sophia and 8 children left Sydney for Europe in the Surrey. I believe they went to London as a daughter was born there in Sept 1820. I am trying to find a record of them arriving in England. Where do I look? I've tried everything I can think of. Further info for the family - The family initially came to Australia in 1813 on the Fortune where David took up the position of deputy Commissary General of New South Wales. They returned to England in 1819 on the Surrey, more children were born and died, his wife died, he remarried and more children were born. In 1829 most of the family returned to Australia in the Prince Regent to settle, some in New South Wales and some in Victoria. Details of the family believed to be on the Surrey in 1819 are: David ALLAN (abt 40) - born 1779 Edinburgh, Scotland Sophia ALLAN (nee JOHNSTON) - born ? Edinburgh, Scotland David Hendrie ALLAN (19) - born 1800 Edinburgh, Scotland Robert Innes ALLAN (18) - born 1801 Edinburgh, Scotland Henry Blair Watson ALLAN (14) - born 1804 Edinburgh, Scotland Sophia ALLAN (13) - born 1806 Edinburgh, Scotland John McMahon ALLAN (10) - born 1808 Heligoland, Germany William Osborne ALLAN (9) - born 1810 Heligoland, Germany Marie Antoinette ALLAN (7) - born 1812 Heligoland, Germany George Octavius ALLAN (2) - born 1817 Sydney, Aust Erskine Johnston ALLAN (1) - born 1818 Sydney, Aust. When the family returned in 1829, Dvaid Hendrie ALLAN stayed in England. George Octavius ALLAN wasn't on the Prince Regent passenger list, he would have been about 12 then, so don't know when he returned to Australia.
