    1. [TSL] Loomer / Lomer
    2. june wayland
    3. Hi I am researching the LOOMER / LOMER names. They spread far and wide, including Canada and USA. In 1820, a John Loomer was convicted of theft and sentenced to death, which was changed to transportation to Australia. He arrived in Sydney in 1822. I note the LOOMER family (himself with wife and children), were living in Sydney in 1828 and he was a servant to a Captain, location, Darling Harbour. His life would have been considerably better I think than what he had in the East End of London at that time. I'm interested if there are any LOOMER / LOMER descendents in Sydney and area, who would like to enlarge on the family history. John left England as John LOOMER but was recorded in Sydney as John LOMER. So I guess all the descendents will bear the name LOMER. My ancestors in East London bore the LOOMER name. As yet, I cannot find a positive link for John with my family in the same district of the East End. John Lomer / Loomer was born c.1799, so records are not always available on the internet. I presume he was single when convicted and met and married in Australia. I have to seek out what I found for the Australian record, as it was some years ago that I found it in the Family Records Centre in Kensington, London. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Because I am too far from the British or Australian archives, I have to use the internet. Many thanks, June :-)

    3. Valerie The London Times of Jan 18, 1853 reports that the Indus was in London preparing for a departure. She sailed on Jan 20, (reported in the Saturday, Jan 22, Times), with Captain John Soy in command. She sailed again from Southampton on Friday, March 4, (reported in Mar 5, Times). On March 29, the Times reported that she was due back at Southampton on April 4. From this we can see that she was making very regular trips back and forth from the far east. For your July departure she sailed from Southampton on June 4. On June 27, the Times reported: On the 14th inst. the Bengal spoke the Peninsular and Oriental Cmpany's ship Indus with the outward India mails of the 4th inst., 164 miles E.S.E. of Malta, steering for Alexandria;... On July 5, the Times reported that the ship was due at Southampton in a few days. She sailed from Southampton again on Wed. July 20 (reported in Times of Thursday, July 21). It appears the trip was taking about 2 weeks in each direction. No mention of passengers by name. Regards.. 3. Hi List, I am trying to find details of a voyage of my ancestor. Her name was Harriet COLEPEPPER (COLEPEPER) a passenger on board a Steamer named 'INDUS' I have looked on Google and I think the ship was a Peninsula & Orient ship. There is an entry in the Allens Indian Mail 1853 July which was returning to England. She had lived in Kandy/Colombo, Ceylon for 9 years with her husband John Spencer COLEPEPER who was Superintendent for the Colombo Police. He returned home in 1859 alone and died in 1862 London. He was a widow on the 1861 census in London. I cannot find Harriet's death entry in General Registration under all variants of her surname. I am wondering if she went home because she was ill and died at sea. She was born 1794. He first husband was Frederick THOMPSON a Lieut in the RN and her maiden name was SOUTH. Any help with this mystery will be much appreciated. regards Valerie Richards

    3. Hello, I am trying to help a cousin who has just contacted me in her hunt for her ancestors. The Mother had died in Martinque 1715, and 3-5 years later, the father, John (Jean) CHAUMETTE came to america with his 3 sons, names of: John (jean), Samuel and Daniel. Here the surname changes spelling. Orginal is French. Now is SHUMATE/SHORMAKE/SHUMATE ( so far). The Father settle then in Elk Run, Staford CO. VA, where he died in 1722. How can I find the name of the boat they sailed on? or any other info about the vessel? Thank you so much for the help. Its appreciated. ~Linda~ Willow Creek, CA. 1. [TSL] Captain John F Booth
    2. Paul Booth
    3. I too am looking for biographical information of a Captain John F Booth. What I do know is that he was master of the 'Sarah Ann' in the 1870-80's. The Sarah Ann sailed out of Melbourne and made frequent trips to Sydney and Hobart. There is a vague mention of a trip to the coral sea in the mid 1870's with a return trip via Darwin, and Perth. There is also the suggestion of Blackbirding. I'm trying to collect as much as possible about the movements of the ship and perhaps a record of the crews in the late 1860's and early 1870's. He was the foster parent of my Great Grandfather, and I have a hunch that my Great Grandfathr's father was a member of the crew, or a Merchant in Melbourne. Much thanks. Paul Booth

    3. Hi Carol, The NYANZA was an 1,870 ton ship, built in 1867 and owned by J. Dunkerley & Co (Mercantile SS Co) for their Mediterranean services. In 1873 she was chartered to the Temperley Line for three voyages from London to Quebec and Montreal and then returned to her owners. In 1893 she sailed from Glasgow for Livorno, Italy and went missing. Not much help I know, but every little helps! 3. Hello Listers, I am new to this list, am trying to find a GGF Master Mariner (at least here in Australia) John Charles Bennett. His children's birth certificates indicate that he was born in the Devonshire in 1825. I find him first in 1852 married to Eliza Ann Nice, NSW The last time I find him is on the death certificate in 1876 of 2nd wife Ellen (Kelly) in QLD. I do not know how or when he got to Australia. So starts the job of ruling out people with like names. In 1850 THE COUNTESS OF YOURBROUGH left London 15-2-1850 via Plymouth 23-2-1850 to Port Adelaide 16-6-1850. The captain was JOHN BENNETT. Could the list do a search for me and tell me all there is about this captain that may or may not help me please ? With thanks Gordon Bennett
