    1. [TSL] ship records: Ireland to England
    2. Hello! List Members! I have just started my Irish research. Census records have listed my great great grandmother, Elizabeth (Betty) MAHER / MAHAR as being born at sea in 1805. The only thing I am sure of is she was Irish! I was wondering if someone could tell me where to look for ship records (Ireland to England) for 1805. I am thinking Elizabeth and her family came into Liverpool, Lancashire, England. Eliabeth married Aaron HOWARD in 1826 and settled in Ashton under Lyne, lived there, had a large family and are buried there. I have no idea who her parents were at this time! I am told the largest concentration of MAHER/MAHARs are from County Tipperary, Ireland. Thank you for any assistance you can provide. I look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Lynn Wilkinson Sylvester Georgia, USA

New for June 2010 is . . . o Passengers: o John Molson - 6th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 6th June 1832 ... more than 900 passengers o John Molson - 7th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 11th June 1832 o ... o barque August, from Hamburg, to Port Adelaide 9th May 1855 o ship La Rochelle, from Hamburg, to Port Adelaide 3rd September 1855 I've been a little out of sight these last couple of weeks transcribing literally hundreds and hundreds of passengers. ..phew! The 6th trip of the JOHN MOLSON steamboat was the last with those huge numbers of emigrant passengers. I just can't get my head around being able to fit SO many on that steamboats. It was large compared to some of the others,154' long and 23' wide, ......... but I can't imagine a couple of days in those conditions, especially right after weeks on the ocean !! New regulations were introduced by a Montreal committee and published in the Montreal Gazette in June 1832, limiting the numbers of passengers. eg. the John Molson could only carry 300. The full text is on the index page ... http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/1819_36stlawrence.htm The 7th trip carried only 32 cabin passengers and 302 steerage passengers (they made an error and throught they only had 292 steerage passengers) From passenger number 167 to 229 there is no "Amount Paid" entered, so those passengers would have held Emigration Society (ES) tickets. I would make a leap to consider that all / most of those on the 7th trip with ES tickets were Scots. When the 1832 newspapers are transcribed, we'll be able to check which vessel(s) brought those settlers to Quebec in the few days prior to June 11th. Of the two new passenger lists for 1855 from Germany to South Australia, the LA ROCHELLE certainly carried the most ... about 500. I think that is the most passenger that Robert and I have had to deal with, from UK or Germany. By comparison the AUGUST carried fewer that 200 passengers, mostly single, however, interesting to note that this vessel carried quite a large number of Swiss, many with very Italian names. Not surprising really, as they came from the Italian border side of Switzerland. Both of these lists are terrific, and we could do lots of cross-referencing. Please share this *new* for TheShipsList website email, with any other list to which you belong if you think it might be of interest or value to those list members (in other words, on-topic). 1. [TSL] Join the urgent battle to save this historic Ship...
    2. T. Browne
    3. Now would be a good time to join the battle to save HMVS Cerberus one of the most historically important 19th Century warships remaining in the world. Built in Britain in 1868 Cerberus is the last Ironclad Breastwork Monitor in the world, she was the first major British Warship to dispense with sails and formed the patten for the Pre-Dreadnought Battleships C. 1870-1905. She was the second warship to go through the Suez`Canal. The former Flagship of the Victorian Colonial Navy, of which she is the last survivor, she is also, easily, the oldest surviving warship to have served in the Royal Australian Navy, formed in 1911. She features two of the only three Cowper Coles Gun Turrets in the world and the only two with the original RML guns available. This ship should be preserved and restored as a priceless heritage treasure, an educational center and a tourist attraction. If you live in Australia, or elsewhere in the world, there has never been a better, or more important time to show your support for our maritime and Naval heritage. Join the worldwide membership of Friends of the Cerberus (website link below) and lets save the ship! To succeed in this project we need your help, time is running out, please join us, both paid and free memberships are available... 2. Sue Swiggum
    3. Hi Martha, I agree, they probably arrived via Quebec, then steamboat to Montreal and then maybe through St. Jean, then Lake Champlain to Berkshire. Canada did not begin to formally archive passenger lists before 1865, so very few do survive, however, TheShipsList website has the St. Lawrence Steamboat passenger lists. St. Lawrence Steamboat Co. Passenger Records Pt. 1 - 1819-1825: http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/1819_20index.htm St. Lawrence Steamboat Co. Passenger Records Pt. 2 - 1826-1836: http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/1819_36stlawrence.htm The St. Lawrence Steamboat Company was not the only one operating on the River, from Quebec to Montreal. It is, however, the only one for which some records survive. It may be possible to identify a probable sailing ship of arrival for some groups found on the steamboats, by studying Quebec ship arrivals as reported in contemporary newspapers. The new settlers usually proceeded inward on the steamboats within 2-3 days after Quebec arrival. http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/Arrivals/index.htm#canada There are customized google search boxes on the Passenger List index page http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/index.htm ... you can use the "Search N. America Lists" for O'Brien (there are lots) but to limit the results you can use the advanced search eg. add Montreal to get only the steamboat lists, for the most part. Good luck ... hope you find a family which fits ... some records don't indicate first name or even initial Sue -- TheShipsList Website http://www.theshipslist.com/ At 10:41 AM 2010-06-08 -0400, mehdeegan@aol.com wrote: > I am searching for the ship(s) on which my g-g-grandparents >traveled to America. > Margaret O'Brien traveled with brother Miles O'Brien, Miles' wife >Mary Curley (or Turley) O'Brien, and infant daughter Mary O'Brien, from >Co. 2. I am searching for the ship(s) on which my g-g-grandparents traveled to America. Margaret O'Brien traveled with brother Miles O'Brien, Miles' wife Mary Curley (or Turley) O'Brien, and infant daughter Mary O'Brien, from Co. Clare, Ireland, to Berkshire, Vermont on the Canadian border, 95% likely in 1830, as next child, Elizabeth, was born in Vermont Feb. 12, 1831. We have one family resource who refers to "Miles" as "John," but that may be a red herring. Miles O'Brien was born in Leitrim, Ireland in 1777, and wife Mary was born 1809. Family lore says infant Mary O'Brien contracted a mild case of smallpox on ship, and was kept in the Captain's quarters until she recovered. They likely traveled to Canada, then overland to St. Jean, then south on Lake Champlaign. They possibly traveled with the Low Family, Patrick Giblin, and the Marlowe family. 1. [TSL] Vicor Stern sailing from France in 1949
    2. This is a follow up on my past post dealing with the family of Victor Stern sailing from France on the ss Graix (can't read the name). I originally thought the ship sailed to the USA, but now I'm not sure.  Victor and his family fairs were paid for in PESOS, by his sponsor.  I am wondering now if they went to South America instead.  The date of Dec. 10, 1949 I am now wondering is it an arrival or departure date. The original questions of who made up this family, ages, where they originally came from, etc still need to be answered if I can find them on a ship's manifests.. Thank you. 1. [TSL] Frank Franz Hess from Hamburg
    2. Karen Hoy
    3. Hi, I am seeking help from the list for the arrival of Frank "Franz" Hess who arrived in NY on March 8, 1888 from Hamburg, Germany. According to his naturalization papers, he was born in Schmulinchen, (That's the spelling on the papers, but it may not be correct) Germany, but his last residence was Yerkenberg, Russia. He arrived in the port of New York. I do not believe the cities are spelled correctly, and I have not found a ship which arrived on / around March 8, 1888. He was married to Wilhelmina, also Germany and at least one son, Henry or Heinrich. All assistance is most welcome. Karen Karen B. Hoy kbhoy@comcast.net

    1. [TSL] Dec. 10, 1949 sailing from France
    2. Could someone look up a ship's manifest for me.  Here is the little bit of info I know-------------- The ship sailed from France to the USA on Dec. 10, 1949. My info says the ship was the SS Graix (it was hard to read the ship's name). On board was the Victor Stern Family. I would like to learn the arrival port; All the members of this Stern family and their ages; Where they were going in the USA; and their occupations. Any other info that might be on the manifest would be great. Thank you very much. Steve Pickholtz New Jersey

The JOHN MOLSON steamboat 4th trip with almost 800 passengers amd the 5th trip with about 320. I really like this particular list compiler because you can mostly read his handwriting and he usually adds first name of the 'head' of the group. eg. The John Rowentree / Rowntree family on the 5th trip with tickets from the Canada Company has quite a bit written about him ... he ran saw-mills in York (Toronto). I'm sure many of the other family's have their stories too. ... The GRAND TRIANON was the first emigrant vessel from UK to Adelaide for 1860, with about 360 passengers ... quite a few Scots on this voyage. There was two births aboard although we don't know who they were and there was only one death, an adult ... all in all a good trip. As they neared their destination, they barely avoided going ashore at Holdfast Bay. They were distracted by what they thought was the "Lightship" (used to guide them) but averted trouble when they realised they were in shallow water. I found the reason mentioned later, in the newspaper. Seems the lamp from the "St. Leonard's Inn" was the culprit, so the harbour master arranged for that lamp to be darkened on the south and west sides. Hi Elizabeth I have an annual world deluxe membership sub to Ancestry and that covers ALL of their data bases so certainly includes the Australian ones . Only hassle I find with Ancestry is their screen format / layout changes . Its been abysmal for some 6 weeks now. .I use the Electoral Rolls a lot and currently this pre empts what I want to type ( Genesreunited does the same, although not as bad as Ancestry) If I type in for location ' Victoria' some 15 choices come up........... These are Australian electoral rolls and I shouldn't need to stipulate Victoria , Australia . Key word examples are the words ' pilot' and 'flying tigers' , which are meaningless in relation to this data Bye MargM Beautiful Central Coast of NSW Australia

    3. Dear Listers, Slightly off topic , but do any listers know if the World Delux subscription for Ancestry includes access to Australian records or have these been omitted from that form of membership. I see UK records are included. Particularly, I am interested in records of Immigration and Shipping into New South Wales that can be viewed on Library Edition Ancestry sites. When searching the Ancestry site for details of the items included in this World Delux category there is the last item indicating "other items" being shown but fails to actually show just what are included! I am thinking about taking out a subscription and feel that World Delux should cover Australia but would like confirmation prior to signing up. If any Listers can clarify this for me I would be most appreciative. Thank you, Elizabeth

    3. Betty, Our own Marj Kohli would be able to address most of your questions, but she is away from her computer at present. Marj has a wonderful website Young Immigrants to Canada http://jubilation.uwaterloo.ca/~marj/genealogy/homeadd.html And she has written a fabulous book on the subject The Golden Bridge: Young Immigrants to Canada, 1833-1839 from Dundurn Press October 2003. http://www.dundurn.com/books/golden_bridge Regards, Sue -- TheShipsList Website http://www.theshipslist.com/ At 06:23 AM 2010-05-28 -0400, Betty wrote: >Hello, > >I don't remember whether I've asked this question recently. 3. Hi Sue, For the hundreds of researchers on the BHC List, she is also "our Marj." :o) I've corresponded with her many times. But, I think she has mostly concentrated on the children arriving in Canada. And, I was able to borrow her great book on an intra-library loan last year. I didn't take the time to read it, but I did browse through it. Thank you for responding.
