Beginning in 1820 the U.S. federal government began to regulate passenger ships arriving in U.S. ports, requiring that they keep passenger lists, in part to alleviate overcrowding. This is why passenger lists for travel from Europe were created. The federal government has no authority to regulate intra-state travel, so those regulations did not apply to the Erie Canal. New York State required Erie Canal passenger lists from 1827 to 1829, and those are available at the New York State Archives: http://www.archives.nysed.gov/a/research/res_topics_trans_recrds_list.shtml Good luck! 3. HI, I am trying to search various ships my ancestors were possibly on. One question I have is - Was there some sort of naming limitation of a vessel? - By this I mean could there only be ONE vessel with a particular name ie MARY at one time or was it was it more restricted to one per registration port??????? Does that make sense?? Thank you Pat

    3. Hello Pat, No, there were no regulations on ship's names. However, after 1855 all British ships were issued with an individual Official Number which never changed regardless of name changes, unless the ship was re-registered under a foreign flag. With a name like MARY, there would have been literally dozens!! regards Ted ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pat Wade" <pmwade@optusnet.com.au> To: <TheShipsList@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 30, 2010 7:59 AM Subject: [TSL] Ships registrations > > HI, > > I am trying to search various ships my ancestors > were possibly on. > > One question I have is - Was there some sort of > naming limitation of a vessel? - By this I mean > could there only be ONE vessel with a particular > name ie MARY at one time or was it was it more > restricted to one per registration port??????? > > Does that make sense?? > > > Thank you > Pat > > > ------------------------------- > visit TheShipsList Website > http://www.theshipslist.com/ > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > THESHIPSLIST-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message > -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No virus found in this incoming message. 3. *new* for TheShipsList website http://www.theshipslist.com/ All the new and updated files and databases have been placed on their own page(s) Find them on the front page in between the big arrows --------------> <--------------- At the bottom of each of these pages I have placed links named " previous month " and " next month " so you are able to navigate back and forth between the monthly *new & updated* pages, as I only keep three months of *new* page links on the Home page. New for October 2010 is . . . o Passengers Steamboats: o Chambly - 1st trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 25th May 1832 o Chambly - 2nd trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 30th May 1832 o Chambly - 3rd trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 5th June 1832 . . nearly 525 passengers These are the first CHAMBLY steamboat passenger lists for 1832. So far, I am really pleased with the Chambly lists .. 368 passengers on the 1st trip, 230 on the 2nd trip and nearly 525 on the 3rd. 1832 was a really huge emigration year, with 66,339 emigrants from UK to British North America (Canada) and 32,872 emigrants from UK to the United States. (many of those 66,000 to Canada continued into the US after landing at Quebec). It is too bad their are only TWO surviving steamboat lists for 1832. The season was really late, with the first ships arriving May 4th (versus April 16 in 1831) o Arrivals: o Ships to Quebec 1832 (in progress) It was with much delight that I now have the 1832 newspapers. I had earlier learned of a blog out an individual's ancestor who had emigrated from Whitby on the Columbia which arrived at Quebec on May 27th ; I found them on the 2nd Chambly trip, May 30th. I added links to the blog and to the arrival of the Columbia. Also on the 2nd Chambly trip, several passengers had their passage paid by "Capt. Younger," who I found sailed from Leven, Fifeshire on the Urania, which also arrived May 27th, so I added a link to that arrival (plus links from the ships' arrivals back to the steamboat). As I transcribed that newspaper issue I learned that a surgeon and his wife, from Whitby, had lost three of their young children on passage to Quebec. They buried their children at Quebec on May 25th and they an their other children were also aboard 2nd Chambly trip. It was easy to research that family ... John Mewburn, MD 1788 - 1861 & Henrietta Chilton 1786 - 1876 ..... and their children. (their arrival vessel is unknown) I don't think I've ever had so many links from/to any one single steamboat list before. There are another three web pages to be added to the 1832 newspapers, so I hope I find other great connections to the passengers. The first of the Petworth Emigrants arrive in 1832, with the Eveline arriving May 28th. Please share this *new* for TheShipsList website email, with any other list to which you belong if you think it might be of interest or value to those list members (in other words, on-topic). 3. The NY Times of May 10, 1890 does report the arrival: SS Russia, (Ger.,) Reuter, Hamburg 12 ds., with mdse. and passengers to R.J. Cortis. Arrived at the Bar at 5 45 A.M. In the same paper dated May 13, 1890 the Russia is reported sailing for Hamburg. There is no mention of the ship going on to Baltimore and it seems rather tight for the ship to make such a voyage. They were committed for trial, so ou might find more by extending your search after 1844. You never know what shipping information you might find in Trove! 3. Hi everyone, The barque "Thomas Hughes" sailed from Liverpool on 18th July 1844 and arrived Port Phillip, Melbourne on Nov 23 1844. Captain Butler brought 3 seamen, named Pope, Evans and O'Hea/O'Hare to be charged with insubordination on the high seas. I am wondering if seaman POPE is possibly my ancestor John Richard POPE b. 1823 Bristol, Gloucestershire, UK. The timeframe is right; he m. Jane Morgan on 13 July 1846 in Melbourne, Vic. Bapt of son in 1848 has his occupation listed as sailor; sons baptism and death cert 1849 & 1851 give occupation as mariner. From then on he was miner or digger. (All in Vic.) Does anyone have more info re this ship and would records give POPEs christian name/s (or even list him/crew at all) or has anyone come across my man please? Cheers, Andrea.
