    3. Hello Mike, This was Elders & Fyffes passenger and banana ship ARIGUANI. She was an aircraft catapult ship during the war used for convoy escort work and was torpedoed and badly damaged in 1941. Abandoned but later reboarded and towed to Gibraltar for repair. Photo at http://iancoombe.tripod.com/id14.html She is listed on the Canadian war brides site at http://www.canadianwarbrides.com/ships-list.asp Sorry but I have no info on passenger lists. regards Ted ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Guest" <m.guest@sympatico.ca> To: <TheShipsList-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 30, 2006 1:51 AM Subject: [TSL] Ship ARIQUANI - England to Montreal, 1945 > This is a lot more recent than most people's searches, but I'm looking for > > what ever information I can get on passenger lists, etc for a ship called > St. > > Ariquani (I believe that's the correct spelling). > > > > It was a converted troop carrier that was used to bring passengers > > from England to Canada after WWII. 3. FAO: Sue Swiggum Sue, Had some tremendous luck my great aunt Dorothy Abraham (Nee Allard) wrote a small book called 'Lone Cone', it was her journal of going across to Canada to Tofino BC as a war bride with her husband. Here is a quote from the book answering the matter of which ship and when: At Southampton we arrived at the boat, which was the Olympic, at that time the largest ship afloat. She looked enormous. It was the last time she was used as a troop ship, taking home the last load of troops, who hailed mostly from Nova Scotia. I shall never forget the send off that they had, the docks were black with people, bands playing, people singing and speeches, a stirring sight. There were very few other passengers so we had plenty of room, amongst them were the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, the former at that time Governor General of Canada, a few army officer and their wives, some nurses, and a few civilians. There was a strike on at the time, and the ship gallantly took her own way out without a tug. we were off. Canada next Stop! It then goes on about the voyage and arriving six days later at Halifax to a tremendous reception. The date I feel, but would love your confirmation, must of been around the middle of May 1919, as she says they applied in November 1918 and the telegram arrived one day in May giving them 1 weeks notice to sail. Her mother and father Percy William Allard & Elizabeth Allard sailed in 1920 I would imagine after April as that was their other daughters wedding day in UK so presumably there must be a Form 30A somewhere to be able to check their dates and ship. They I feel would of done a similar journey. Thanks Graham Allard

    3. This is a lot more recent than most people's searches, but I'm looking for what ever information I can get on passenger lists, etc for a ship called St. Ariquani (I believe that's the correct spelling). It was a converted troop carrier that was used to bring passengers from England to Canada after WWII. My father was a Canadian soldier and married my mom in England. I have a note that says they landed in Montreal on Aug 26th, 1945 on the above ship. The only info I've been able to find online is a mention that a ship by the same name arrived in Gibralter on Nov 3, 1941. I've checked on the ship based sites that I've got but found nothing that current. Any ideas? Mike Guest London, ON

    3. Some of you are familiar with this story, but for those who aren't . . . Last week I was notified by a colleague in Australia, that in individual in UK had copied some of the website content of TheShipsList, and was selling it on eBay. My colleague had purchased one of those CDs, thinking it might be a *new* British record source, but quickly realized that TheShipsList was the source. There had been no attempt made by the thief to disguise the fact and even my 'editorial comments' and 'typos' were carefully reproduced. As all TSL website content is 100% free access, I was very distressed and wasn't sure what to do next. What I did do first was to search eBay for myself and found that there were actually six CDs with stolen content from TheShipsList website, being offered by three sellers. Four different record sets, as each of them offered a copy of one of the CDs . . . so are they stealing from each other too ? [family--tree] GENEALOGY: SHIPS PASSENGER LISTS TO SOUTH AUSTRALIA CD GENEALOGY: SHIPS PASSENGER LISTS FROM SCOTLAND CD <<--- Genealogy - Ship Wrecks of 1816, 1817 & 1818 [manic1bookworm] GENEALOGY: SHIPS PASSENGER LISTS FROM SCOTLAND <<-- GENEALOGY: MARRIAGES AT SEA [scotlandspeople] GENEALOGY: SHIPS PASSENGER LISTS FROM SCOTLAND <<-- I consulted other colleagues for advice, but also followed eBay's instructions to report such infringements. I am also in contact with the Trading Standards Enforcement Section in Carmarthenshire, Wales (as we know the supposed name / address of one of the thieves) and with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police "National Ports Enforcement Team," which also takes such infringements very seriously. I am really delighted to tell you that within hours, eBay took decisive action. I received emails from California (3), emails from United Kingdom (5) and a telephone call from Utah (1) all within a 24 hour period, and all listings were subsequently removed. Those sellers, at least " family--tree " and " manic1bookworm " are still out there, and as my Australian colleague discovered, are both still selling other stolen material, so I ask each and every one of you to be vigilant as you work on your own research, but if you do encounter anything that seems a little too familiar being offered by another, please take the time to pass your observations on to the person you believe to be the owner of the Intellectual Property. Many many thanks to all who offered such valuable support Sue -- TheShipsList Website http://www.theshipslist.com/

I suspect they remained in the custody of the shipping line or its Agent(s), then after the ship had safely arrived and an undetermined period of time, the list would be destroyed. For British records, those outbound lists were not archived by the Government before 1890 . . . for other countries, those outbound records were never archived. The August 24th list is unusual as there are people from Boston and New York, but also from Spain! I know this because I found them registered at Hotels in Montreal ! I didn't see them arriving at the port of Quebec, so they may have come via the Erie Canal. It wasn't officially opened until 1825, but it was under contruction for several years. The most misremembered part of the date was the actual year of arrival. >Several possibilities to start looking for, but any suggestions of the >best place to begin? Yes, on Steve Morse's one-step pages which Lorine posted about http://www.stevemorse.org/ . . . there are lots of different search forms to use for Ellis Island Database (and others) . . they are intuitive, but take the time to read the "Frequently Asked Questions" if you get bogged down. How is it possaible to see a list of such > ships, and also their passenger lists? There are no comprehensive lists of immigrants arriving in Canada prior to 1865. Until that year, shipping companies were not required by the government to keep their passenger manifests. You might find an ancestor in correspondence of the Secretary of State on immigration for 1817-1857. There are lists of immigrants, mainly Irish, and entry books re immigration, and assisted emigration to British North America. These must be ordered offline . Details are given at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/articles/immcanpre1865.shtml At The Olive Tree Genealogy, there is a page on the section of Ships Passenger Lists To Canada, which explains what lists are available at the National Archives of Canada (NAC) http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tocanp01.shtml On TheShipsList website they are including Quebec ship arrivals extracted from contemporary newspapers. See http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/Arrivals/index.htm You can also try inGeneas, the online searchable database of early immigration to Canada. Some records are free, others must be paid for, but the search and it's results are free. A search engine for InGeneas is at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/search_shipscanada.shtml There are also some passenger lists which were kept by shipping agents in the originating country. For example, the Passenger Books of J & J Cooke, Shipping Agents gives sailings from Londonderry to Philadelphia PA, Quebec, and St. John New Brunswick from 1847 to 1871. Olive Tree has some passenger lists from these records online, and will be adding more as time permits. For an index of clickable links to those JJ Cooke passenger lists online to date, see http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/jjcooke.shtml If you want to search online, you may have limited success because only a very small percentage of ships to Canada have been transcribed and put online.
