Hi there You've probably tried this before but I thought I'd mention www.ingeneas.com. I went searching there and there are a couple of Patrick Mahers - not sure they would be your relative though. There are some Patrick Maguires that might fit. There is a Thomas Maghar in the census (not as a passenger record). http://www.ingeneas.com/ingeneas/index.html Harrington reveals a lot of names - it may take you a while to try to match the two together. I hope you are successful. Kathy Miller ON Canada From: Janet Prata Date: 05/21/06 10:04:57 To: TheShipsList-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [TSL] PATRICK MAGHAR, & ? HARRINGTON - Ireland to Montreal My ancestor (great/great/grandfather) was named Patrick Maghar (or Patrick Maher) and came to Montreal anywhere from 1826 to 1846 (although most likely on the earlier end of that time frame). Patrick Maghar was from Tipperary, Tipperary County Ireland. He travelled with an Uncle, whose name was HARRINGTON (I'm assuming that's his last name-- we have no first name). Eventually Patrick travelled down to New York State, and settled in Monticello, NY, sometime before 1849. Does anyone know of passenger lists of ships traveling from Ireland to Canada at that time? Does anyone know what departure ports were commonly used in Ireland at that time? (Especially for someone from Tipperary)? Also, was Montreal a common port of arrival at that time? I am reading that Canada does not have good records of passenger lists at that time, and I have had difficulty finding lists of ships leaving ports in Ireland, bound for Canada. I'm still hopeful though! Thanks VERY much, Janet

This is my first posting in years and I see by the welcome email many of you do research, go to libraries, etc. I don't want anyone to go to such trouble! I just thought someone might have the list already. Many thanks Kathy Miller ON, Canada
Is there a way to find a passenger on a ship from England in the 1600's easier than going thru all of the ships? The passenger was coming to Delaware and I am certain he landed in Lewes first. His last name was Coverdale. There are two listed, Richard and David, but I think (?) that Richard is David's son. They are listed as having to pay land tax in Delaware. Delores dcj@dmv.com

If you extend your search one more year (1847) here's an idea for you. There are some passenger lists which were kept by shipping agents in the originating country. For example, the Passenger Books of J & J Cooke, Shipping Agents gives sailings from Londonderry to Philadelphia PA, Quebec, and St. John New Brunswick from 1847 to 1871. Olive Tree has some passenger lists from these records online, and will be adding more as time permits. For an index of clickable links to those JJ Cooke passenger lists online to date, see http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/jjcooke.shtml The Hawke Papers, letterbooks of Chief Emigrant Agent Anthony B. Hawke are also available. They cover the years 1831 to 1892. See the searchable database at http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/db/hawke.htm If you want to search online, you may have limited success because only a very small percentage of ships to Canada have been transcribed and put online. Hi Folks On my grandfather's (James Allen) Declarartion of Intention he clearly states he arrived in the US from Liverpool on the Adriatic on or about June 4, 1914. He states he was an electrician and born in Plymouth, England on 10-9-1883. BUT...he is not on the ships passenger list nor are there any records on him being born in England. Any hints on where else I might look??? There is a list of North Atlantic passenger ship sinkings at http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/Wrecks/nalosses.htm It includes a DEUTSCHLAND but she was wrecked in 1875. The other DEUTSCHLAND built 1924 was sunk by Allied air attack in 1945 off Lubeck. regards Ted ----- Original Message ----- From: <WINCHIME20005@aol.com> To: <TheShipsList-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 21, 2006 1:34 AM Subject: [TSL] Deutschland >I am looking for my grandfather who went on a ship supposedely called > Deutschland and it sank never heard from him . My Great Uncle sailed on both ships and I am trying to locate information on both. I have a photo on him aboard the Zelos . The lifebuoy in the photo says Zelos Goteborg. Another photo on board the Concordia was taken in 1901. I know the Concordia ran aground in Australian waters and was towed to Australia then sold. My Uncle was Swedish and immigrated to Australia after the Concordia's grounding. Thanking you. Debbie
I am looking for the ship Hans Hansen came to USA from Norway. I do know he left Oslo Norway on the SS Angelo and came to Hull England Sept 23, 1881. I was told he then would have gone to London to take the next ship to USA. I would like to know what ship and what port he came to in the USA. He lived in Wisconsin. I would have to guess he went to Canada then to US. He was 23 years old when he left. I do know that some of them took the farm name which was Ronningen. Some of the family did change there name to the English spelling of Running. Thanks Lori

Joan (JPIPICH@aol.com) asked: 1) about the arrival of the SS Holland in 1872 2) how her ancestors got to Pittsburgh. 1) Here is the arrival report (New York Times, November 18, 1872) Arrived New York November 17 Steam-ship Holland (Br.,) [captain] Bragg, London Oct. 31 and Havre Nov. 4 with mdse. and 789 steerage passengers to [agent] F. W. J. Hurst. Has had strong westerly winds the entire passage. Nov. 8, lat 50 43 lon 20 34 passed a German ship bound E., 9th lat 50 38 lon 26 16 passed a Bremen steamer bound E., 15th lat 42 33 lon 63 18 passed a Gu..n [Guion?] steamer bound E. Conditions on the Holland (a small ship by modern standards) must have been awful with 789 passengers. 2) In 1872, I would expect passengers for Pittsburgh to take the train. In earlier days, immigrants might have travelled by New Orleans and the Mississippi steamboats, or by Quebec and the Great Lakes route. -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------

In December, Ted answered my query about the SS Holland. Thank you Ted! However from his references I could not find the port it arrived at in November 1872. I assume it was New York - Castle Garden. I have many ancestors who came to the US and arrived in New York but their destination was Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA. What mode of transportation would they use to arrive in Allegheny County? Any information or reference appreciated. This Steamship was used during the Civil War. After the war it was sold and renamed the Cresent City. I believe it was then used for cargo and passengers. Aspinwall, Panama is on the east side of Panama. Here they picked up Travelers going points east. I'm not sure of any other ports that it stopped at. I do know that it did go to New York. If any body knows about the routes and ports it could have stopped I would be most appreciative. On a Passenger lists its says Port of departure-Aspinwall, Panama and Destination-Place of origin Paul ( ? ) Port of arrival New York, New York.
