Most states are indexed, so this will make your job slightly easier. You can order films in to a nearby Family History Centre, or have NARA do the job (once you have precise details) Once you know your state, you can get a list of film numbers (NARA & FHC) at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/nara_indexbyport.shtml Scroll down to the state you want and click on the link, then find the film # you need The staff of the National Archives will undertake a search of the original records for a fee but you must know the name of the ship, the date of arrival, and the port of arrival. To obtain a search request form, write to: General Reference Branch (NNRG), National Archives and Records Administration, 7th and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20408 and request NATF Form 81, Order for Copies of Ship Passenger Arrival Records. To find your nearest FHC you can go to http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp There are some ideas for researching hard to find ancestors on ships lists after 1820 at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/usaaft1820.shtml Good luck! 1. Bagemuehl/Prenzlau - Brandenburg Emigration Records
    2. Kimberly Prell Clark
    3. I have finally gotten birthplace information regarding my Prell line and am thrilled that decade old brick wall is scaled!!! Earlier this week I received information from another source that my great grandfather, August Friederich Wilhelm Prell was born in Bagemuehl, Prussia. In researching this line I finally stumbled on the Brandenburg Emigration Records on Ancestry.com. I have found that the emigration records are listed with my 2nd great grandfather as Heinrich Wilhelm Prell and not Frederick or Friederich as he is listed on several census schedules. Heinrich/Friederich is found on the Emigration records with the rest of his family. I am also finding that the emigration records do not list the ship that these grandparents arrived on in 1853 so I am once again wondering how to find that information. Heinrich Prell was born in 1821, August born in 1842. Naturally it is another hard road to cross! Is there someone who can guide me to more records for Brandenburg, I'm not fi! nding much at all on the internet. I assume that by looking at an old map and finding Bagemuehl on a map SW of Berlin and Prenzlau near the border that Prenzlau is the city or harbor that they left from. Any forward guidance on this would be greatly appreciated. I haven't had the chance to go to the Genealogy Library here in Kansas City but would appreciate names of books or perhaps microfilm that can be ordered for Brandenburg records. Below is the information I have on this line including the newest from this week. Also, if any corrections are needed for correct place names please let me know. 3. I have recently been searching for information on the Anglo Indian which went from Scotland to Australia in 1883, and have joined the ships list, and looked at many sources of information, and found 1998 & 1999 entries, and was greatly assisted by the Passenger Ship History Service I have found that a subsciber's great Grandfather C H Hillcoat was the Master and that his wife died at sea of diptheria. I found an entry in another piece of information which gave the departure date from Grenock, Scotland: 7th July 1883 arrived Brisbane, Australia: 1st October, 1883 Captain Charles Hillcoat. 562 passengers My Mother's Grandfather and his sister went from Glasgow to Australia in 1883 on the 'Anglo Indian' Our family history states that on the journey to Australia from Scotland, the ship was only one day's sailing time from the island of Sumatra when the volcano Krakatoa erupted. This event was in August, 1883 I would much appreciate knowing if any subsciber been successful in finding a ships log or further information Regards Elizabeth Flintshire, N. Wales

Hi John, In addition to the picture URL Ted sent you, we have some pictures on TheShipsList too. They are of her steaming up the St. Lawrence, to Montreal in 1956. http://www.theshipslist.com/pictures/empressofengland.htm Ship Description and voyage history http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/descriptions/ShipsE.html There wasn't quite "year round navigation" to Montreal in 1959 (that began in 1964), but the port was open to the sea by the 1st April 1959. I'm a little concerned about your departure date, as her first 1959 arrival at Montreal was April 24th. She would not have taken three weeks in passage. At that time of the year her passage time Liverpool / Montreal would be about 7-8 days. If you are sure of the departure date, is it possible the ship was the EMPRESS OF BRITAIN which was also sailing Liverpool / Montreal and arrived on April 11th 1959 ? Unfortunately the Canadian landing record is not available, as post 1935 passenger records remain in the custody of Citizenship and Immigration Canada. If your mother was a passenger she would be able to request a copy of her record through "Access to Information," but because of Canadian privacy laws, the request must be either be accompanied by a signed consent from the person concerned, or proof that he/she has been deceased twenty years. However, there should be a British outbound passenger list, as those do survive and are accessible through to 1960. They are not filmed nor indexed and the originals are housed at Kew, so you would either have to visit in person, or hire a British researcher. http://www.theshipslist.com/Research/ukrecords.html I hope this helps, Sue -- TheShipsList Website http://www.theshipslist.com/

So why not start with the free ones and if you come up empty, go to the pay sites Here's the free ones: Passenger lists are available on microfilm so if you know a date of arrival or a ship name you can order the microfilm or have NARA do a lookup for you. 3. Hello Irene, This was the steamship LY-EE-MOON, She was a 1,202 ton ship, 282.4ft x 27.3ft x 16.6ft, built 1859 by Thanes Ironworks, London and owned by Australasian Steam Navigation Co. Originally built as a paddle steamer, used in the Opium trade and based in Hong Kong where she was rammed and sunk in 1874. Salvaged and returned to England where she was repaired and converted to screw propulsion. On Saturday 29th May 1886 she left Melbourne for Sydney. At about 9 o'clock the following evening off Green Cape, the night being clear and the lighthouse light being distinctly visible. Capt. A. Webber in command was making his first voyage as Master of the ship and was unfamiliar with the coast, as was the Third Mate who was on watch. The captain had gone below leaving instructions that he was to be informed as soon as Green Cape Light was near. Shortly after this the ship crashed into rocks at the foot of the cape. There was a heavy sea running and it was impossible to launch the lifeboats. An attempt to get the ship off the rockes by reversing the engines was unsuccessful and shortly after the ship broke in two. The forepart containing the saloon and foremast drifted shorewards and the helpless passengers attempted to find shelter in the rigging, but he mast snapped and most of them were flung into the sea. A number of seamen managed to reach shore and got a line to the vessel with the assistance of the lighthouse keepers. Meanwile the after part with the steerage passengers and engineers sank in deep water. Eighty lives were lost and there were 15 survivors. 3. Irene, The Australian coastal steamer "Ly-ee-Moon" was wrecked on Green Cape, just south of Eden, on the night of 29/30 May 1886 with heavy loss of life, variously given as between 41 and 86, and only 15 survivors. It was one of Australia's worst shipwrecks of the day so there should be plenty of information available. Built as a paddle steamer in 1859 and named after one of the passages into Hong Kong the "Ly-ee-Moon" was one of the fastest ships afloat when completed being capable of 17 knots. Intended as an opium runner she later served as a blockade runner in the American Civil War before being sold to Australasian Steam Navigation Company by which time she had been converted to a screw steamer. At the time of her loss she was en route from Port Phillip to Sydney.
