    1. SHIP PARAGON - UK>NYC 1838
    2. Hello, SUBJECT: SHIP PARAGON - <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />UK>NYC – 1838 <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> This request is for information relating to my Great Grandfather: HENRY “SQUIRE” FROST born April 7, 1826 in Yexam (Yacksam), near Norwich, England – died June 5, 1895 at LaMotte, Jackson, Iowa. Exhaustive Internet research and search of LDS passenger lists has failed to find any reference to his emigration/immigration. Henry “Squire” Frost immigrated with his Mother and Step-Father in1838 when he was 12 years old. His biography states: “…the lad enjoyed the long ocean voyage from the moment the good ship "Paragon," under Capt. Cadiz, left her moorings at London until she dropped her anchor in New York harbor eight weeks later” Family members traveling in 1838 with Henry Frost were: 1. Mother, Maria Ward [Frost] [Brand] born 1798 in Yacksam, England, died 1885 in Jersey City 2. Step-Father, Henry Brand born 1808 in England – died in Jersey City 3. Brother, John Frost b 11 OCT 1817 in Yacksam is assumed to traveled with the family, although his biography indicates he immigrated at age 15 which would be 1832 (the same year their father Isaac Frost of Wian-Farthing, England died) 4. Brother, William Frost (younger) 5. Sister, Maria Frost (younger) NYC> NJ> IA Upon arrival, the family settled in Jersey City, New Jerseys where Mr. Brand (Henry’s stepfather) was engaged in the gardening business. Henry worked on a farm nearby and later worked as a wagon maker, then raised oysters and manufactured green-house sash until moving to LaMotte, Jackson County, Iowa in about 1856. Henry Frost married twice: 1. Elenor Welsh married 1846 in Jersey City (11 children including my grandfather) and 2. Nancy Burroughs Griswold, married 17Aug 1880 in Jackson County Iowa (2 children) Henry Frost’s Ship of Immigration I have found many Ships named Paragon including several sailing around 1838, but no records or mention of a Paragon sailing from England to the USA during that specific year and no clues to the emigration/immigration of Henry Frost. Any information is appreciated or tips for me to follow-up. I live in Alexandria, VA with access to resources around the National Capital if anyone has guidance for me to make use of these valuable resources. In July some ships had hundreds and hundreds. There were 23 ships from Glasgow to Quebec in 1887, but these two were the only August departures (after the 13th) From the CD-ROM --"TheShipsList Passenger Ship Arrivals Canadian Ports 1865-1899"-- http://theshipslist.com/cdrom/index.htm Reel Number Ship Name Departure Information Arrival Information Shipping Line Special Group(s) Remarks C-4536 BUENOS AYREAN Glasgow, Scotland 1887-08-20 Quebec, Que. 1887-08-30 (MTL) Montreal Ocean Steamship Company (Allan Line) (O): Icelanders (33) - faded manifest page List Number: 70; Captain James Scott C-4536 SIBERIAN Glasgow, Scotland 1887-08-26 Quebec, Que. 1887-09-05 (MTL) Montreal Ocean Steamship Company (Allan Line) List Number: 74; Captain Robert P. Often a 'faded' page would just make it difficult for a transcriber unfamiliar with the names, but as you know who you are looking for, you should be able to find him. The passenger manifest is on Microfilm at the Library & Archives of Canada [LAC], in Ottawa. The Ships are placed on the reel, in order of arrival. You can borrow this reel on an Inter Library Loan [ILL]. You can find the details for this procedure at this LAC Genealogy Research URL http://www.collectionscanada.ca/ill/index-e.html You are also able to ILL from Ottawa, to libraries in the US, and outside North America. These microfilms contain arrivals from ALL ports, they are not indexed. I know that there were many ships leaving from Georgetown, British Guiana, Trinidad and Jamaica but few records. I was able to find grandfather-in-law's second arrival on Ellis Island's website but unable to find his first entry to the US. I know that European arrivals and ships records are available but cannot find out more about the ships from South America....does anyone know more about them? Sharon

    3. I labeled the ship a steamer in my previous message. I have discovered that the ship indeed was a clipper schooner. The original message was----- "I am searching for the steamship John J Taylor which is supposed to have had a shipwreck somewhere between New Orleans and Tampa, Florida. My husband's ggrandfather was the master of this ship. He died and there were other deaths, so I am told. Whether this ship was lost or simply wrecked I don't know. There is supposed to be a newspaper article which reports the wreck and the loss of Alexander Black and at least one other passenger. The ship was based in Tampa FL. The ship was owned by either the McKay family or the Farris family. This wreck occurred in 1859 or 1860. Any help would be greatly appreciated." I have also learned that the ship was owned by the W. G. Ferris and Son, Tampa FL. I also have another question. Are there lists of Ships masters in Scotland in or around the 1820-1840s in Scotland? Again any help will be appreciated. Margaret Black Mt. 3. hi again, When I first went to Steve's one steps and searched for this ship, I got zero hits for Adriatic in 1913-1915. That is when I sent my first message. Then Sue, our list admin, wrote to me to say she had LOTS of hits! So I went back, searched again and lo and behold THIS time I got hits. Lots of them. I guess it was a brief computer glitch, but in any case you might want to go and take a look for yourself. http://www.stevemorse.org/ Lorine On 12 Jun 2006 at 20:03, TheShipsList-L@rootsweb.com, <bleney@comc wrote: > > > On 12 Jun 2006 at 13:29, Beth Leney wrote: > > > > > > James Allen, an electrician, born 10-9-1883 in Plymouth > > England He came over on June 4-5,1914 from England on the > > Adriatic leaving from Liverpool He lived at 427 7th ave, > > Brooklyn Ny -- Lorine McGinnis Schulze * Olive Tree Genealogy (Ships Passenger Lists) http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ * Naturalization Records http://naturalizationrecords.com/ * Images of Ships Lists http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/ otg@csolve.net or olivetreegenealogy@gmail.com

He is not on that boat nor > was he born on that date??? > Beth You have one very good piece of info there -- because an immigrant who arrived after June 29, 1906 could not naturalize until the government located their immigration record (a passenger list). Petitions (not the Declarations) after 1906 have information that has been verified and matched to an immigration record. In fact a a certification of the immigrant's arrival record was a required part of the process The easy way to remember is to think of opposites: BEFORE 1906, the Declaration has more useful genealogical info than the Petition (usually) and AFTER 1906 it's the opposite - the Petition is more useful and accurate than the Declaration So, the declaration you found might not be correct. I did a quick look of Ellis Island using Steve Morse's one steps at http://www.stevemorse.org -and there is NO ship named Adriatic entering NY from 1913-1915. So you need to find his petition as it seems he either arrived on a different ship, a different date OR via a port other than NY. For a Resource Guide to the records, what you can expect to find, where to find them, and alternate sources of finding those important years (immigration and naturalization) at http://naturalizationrecords.com/usa/ Read the intro then choose your state of interest. There are also many links to searchable online records at http://naturalizationrecords.com/ Since you are looking for POST 1906, you can also go directly to INS for a search (full details are found online at NaturalizationRecords.com) -- Lorine McGinnis Schulze * Olive Tree Genealogy (Ships Passenger Lists) http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ * Naturalization Records http://naturalizationrecords.com/ * Images of Ships Lists http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/ otg@csolve.net or olivetreegenealogy@gmail.com

They include ships to New York from 1892-1924 You should use Steve Morse's one-step search engine to search this set of records, at http://stevemorse.org/ There is a quick tutorial on how best to use the search engines at http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/ Click on "Oddities of Searching Ellis Island! What have you found? " Be very very careful to be creative in your ancestors surname spelling! Also, since you have a month and year, why not search using Steve's One steps for ships arriving that month? Both NARA & LDS have films with the New York passenger lists. You could search through microfilm (but you can also do this online) Ships are on the reels in order of date of arrival, so all you need to do is find the film number that has your arrival date on it. Then order it in to a nearby Family History Centre, or request a lookup from NARA. When you get the film, scroll through to find your date but if your ship isn't there, be sure to check more thoroughly on the film - the lists aren't always exactly in chronological order. New for June 2006 is . . . o Fleets new: o Koninklijke Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij, Amsterdam / Royal Netherlands Steamship Co. o McIlwraith MacEacharn / The Scottish Line Two more new fleets . . . the first is a big one and Dutch (great poster) and the other is another interesting sailing ship Fleet, which operated between mostly London and Australia (predominantly Brisbane). Ted and I offer thanks to Fraser Morrison of Inverness for providing us with the details of this Fleet. There were more steamships (cargo), other than the two passenger steamships we have incuded. o Pictures: o Aquitania After our Aquitania discussion on-list, Rob Jackson sent me a great FGO Stuart postcard image of Aquitania in dry-dock at Southampton.......thanks Rob o Passengers: o New Swiftsure - 13th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 16th July 1824 o New Swiftsure - 14th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 23rd July 1824 o New Swiftsure - 15th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 29th July 1824 o New Swiftsure - 16th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 6th August 1824 (including brig Glory passengers, from Belfast) o Quebec - 16th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 6th August 1824 (including brig Glory passengers, from Belfast) o New Swiftsure - 17th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 13th August 1824 o New Swiftsure - 18th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 20th August 1824 . . struck a rock , returned to Quebec o Quebec - 18th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 20th August 1824 o New Swiftsure - 18th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 27th August 1824 . . continued trip Six + more lists for steamboat New Swiftsure in 1824, plus I jumped ahead and have included two steamboat Quebec lists for 1824. This is a situation where the steamboat lists offer up some real gems. The 16th New Swiftsure trip on August 6th includes 93 passengers who had cut a "sweet deal" on their fare from Quebec to Montreal. They were identified as being from the brig GLORY from Belfast, which had arrived at Quebec on August 4th. Then the Quebec steamboat list, also of August 6th, didn't identify any passengers particularly, but offered the same "deal" to all steerage passengers aboard, 60+ of those appear to be the balance of the brig GLORY passengers. The 18th New Swiftsure trip almost ended in tragedy, as it struck a rock at the Richelieu and was in a sinking state, but was taken in tow of the steamboat Quebec and returned to Quebec City, where the passengers transferred to that steamboat for their trip to Montreal. In addition to notes about immigrants, there are many "cabin" passengers who were holidaying in Montreal, with side trips to Quebec who appear on the steamboat lists as well as published lists as Hotel Guests. (the newspaper accounts can be found at the arrivals link in the navigation bar, but also from the steamboat lists themselves) The origin of those people is truly amazing, as they don't only come from New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia etc., but also Carolina and even Louisiana ! I don't know about you, but I tend to think of our ancestors at this time suffering hardships, not about them flitting around North America on holiday . . . in 1824. I suppose it is all relative (maybe the exchange rate was really good in 1824 <smile>) <<Our city has been overflowed with strangers during the last month ; the principal hotels have been so thronged that great difficulty has been experienced in procuring agreeable entertainment, previous to the departure of the Steam Boats for Quebec . . . >> Please share this *new* for TheShipsList website email, with any other list to which you belong if you think it might be of interest or value to those list members (in other words, on-topic). Enjoy ! Sue -- TheShipsList Website http://www.theshipslist.com/
