    1. Ship Betty or Bettie
    2. I would to know as much as I can about this Ship and its passengers, specifically the voyage departing Oct. 19, 1773, from Larne, Ireland, My ancestor John Craig and his wife Eleanor and six children (ages unknown). Records I have show John and Eleanor "Ellen" departed from Ahoghill, Ireland on ship Bettie out of Larne, Ireland, leaving Oct. 19, 1773. They carried a letter of recommendation from the Presbyterian Church in Ahoghill. I'm not sure where they were born. I have seen a very interesting document concerning them and their voyage - see below: Recd., from John, Crage One pound Too Shillings & Nine pen in Earnest for Seaven passangers for their passage unboard the Betty from Seaven passengers for their passage unboard the Betty from this porte to Charlestown South Carolina their Allowance to be Seaven pounds of Beefe Seaven pounds of Bread or Meate & One Pounds of Butter or Molasses Each Week & Too Quarts of Water Each Day for Each Passinger 11..2..9 Pounds Larue 19 Octor. 1773 Abrm., Woodside Any information on this Ship and it passengers on the 19 Oct, 1773 trip would be greatly appreciated. From the Ancestry copy of the census, the name of the vessel was Theodor, and the port of registry was Stettin. The vessel was a Brigg [sic] of 167 tons. I don't think getting more information on the vessel will be easy. -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------

    1. Aquitania passenger lists
    2. Moira Elsley
    3. Hi. I sailed from Southampton on the Aquitania, arriving in Halifax on October 25th, 1948. I was aged 9, my brother John Malcolm Ferguson, aged 11 and my mother, Jessie Robertson Ferguson (nee Millar) was 32. We had travelled from the outskirts of Glasgow, Scotland to Southampton, England for the sailing. My father, James Ferguson, sailed on the Queen Mary, landing in Halifax 6 months ahead of us, but am uncertain if he departed from Southampton or Glasgow, Scotland. Would anyone know where I might find passenger lists for the Aquitania and the Queen Mary for 1948? Also, is there anyone out there who sailed on these ships at the same times? Or is there anyone who may be related to either my mother or father? My maternal grandfather was Albert Millar, Glasgow, Scotland and my paternal grandparents were Mary and John Ferguson of Largs, Scotland. Thanks for any help. Moira

Reessing (Russing?) According to another source I have, there should be 630 Halifax passengers on board. Another 1,060 passengers went on to New York. For the Halifax list I only see the List Number (which number should be obvious on the microfilmed manifest) and Captain name in the "Remarks" field, so this is a good thing. Often the German lists are fairly dark (oxidized before the filming in 1949), but there is no "dark" or "faded manifest" mentioned in Remarks. If a manifest is dark it usually only poses a problem for a transcriber, should anyone ever transcribe it, but as you know exactly who you are looking for, you shouldn't have a problem even if it is a little dark. You said you have already researched the ship, but we have her description and voyage history here http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/descriptions/ShipsP-Q.html She made two trips to Halifax, 1898 and 1899 on HAPAG's Hansa Line Service . . . then continued to New York as regular Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfarhrt Aktien-Gesellschaft (Hamburg-America Line). Those two trips were the only calls to Canadian ports for that ship. The passenger manifest is on Microfilm at the Library & Archives of Canada [LAC], in Ottawa. The Ships are placed on the reel, in order of arrival. You can borrow this reel on an Inter Library Loan [ILL]. You can find the details for this procedure at this LAC Genealogy Research URL http://www.collectionscanada.ca/ill/index-e.html You are also able to ILL from Ottawa, to libraries in the US, and outside North America. These microfilms contain arrivals from ALL ports, they are not indexed. The LDS do also have copies of this microfilm, their number LDS number 0889439 ~ 1899 ~ port of Halifax I see you have a Canadian email address. If there be any errors, then please inform me and I will correct them. (I have some concerns that the name GANJE listed should read as GANGE.) Families may not be fully grouped together. Children traveling with their parents but old enough to fend for themselves (at age 14) may be listed as themselves. Also, many lost family members due to a measles outbreak on board. 3. Becky, More information is being gathered regarding emigration from the Lippe area of Germany - Emigration from Lippe to the USA http://www.lippe-auswanderer.de/datenbank-eng.htm Emigrant ships: http://www.lippe-auswanderer.de/htm/vorwort-eng.htm Your gggGrandfather is listed as immigrating in May of 1858, age 20 years old, with destination of U.S.A.: August Bollhöfer * 1838 (v) Silixen (?)(from Silixen in Lippe / Silikessen; Nordrhein-Westfalen,Deutchland) Herkunft: Silixen Nr. 16 Lebensphasen: 1858 (g) als Schuhmachergeselle 05.1858 Auswanderung in die, USA Quellen: Verdenhalven /XI 1492 (data compiled by Dietmar Willer) He is referenced in this book: (Immigration before 1877) Verdenhalven, Fritz: Die Auswanderer aus dem Fürstentum Lippe (bis 1877). Nach ungedruckten und gedruckten Quellen, Bielefeld 1980. Hopefully someone on the list has the book and can do a look up for you or you might want to post an inquiry at this message board - Boards > Localities > Central Europe > Germany > Nordrhein-Nordrhein Westfalen http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.ceeurope.germany.Nordrhein-20-Westfalen.general Most likely the book is a compilation of passenger manifests, documents and newspaper accounts regarding people leaving the Lippe area for other countries. Newspapers are vital if ship manifests were destroyed by wars or some natural disasters. Try his surname in the search engines at www.theshipslist or www.olivetreegenealogy There are also instructions on how to locate passenger lists through the Family History Library or from The National Archives at those web-sites with other links to help you. Even though he's listed as leaving in May 1858, you may want to give a couple of months leaway in discovering his passenger manifest arrival information. Check with your local reference librarian to see if they can obtain the book for you or call local public schools or universities with a German language department. Am sure they'd be willing to help. Many thanks Hi Rachel, The Sydney Shipping Gazette http://www.nla.gov.au/ferg/issn/14403897.html Volume 5, Number 241 (28 October, 1848) Page 261 Port Phillip, October 18th 1848 : TASMAN, barque, from London the 5th [June] and Plymouth the 16th June. Passengers:- Mrs. Isabella Bentley, Mr John Black, Mr. Gregory, Dr. Ayre surgeon superintendent, and 222 emigrants. This unfortunately only confirms the rigging as a barque, but doesn't include tonnage or Captain name, however there is this chatty item about the voyage . . . The Tasman from London and Plymouth arrived yesterday with 222 healthy emigrants. There were 9 births and 10 deaths (children) on board, and 1 seaman who died from inflammation of the brain. There are 40 married couples, 31 single females, 54 single men, 4 boys and 3 girls under 14 and 4 infants. She has been 117 days out, and has had favourable but light winds during the voyage. The emigrants are composed of English and Scotch almost exclusively. She spoke the following vessels __ July 8, the Ranger, whaler of London, from New Zealand, in 14.42 N.L, with 16 barrels oil, and four whales alongside. July 14, in latitude 10.46 west, longitude 23.6 west, a suspicious schooner, full of men, ran alongside within two cables' length, but sheered off when they observed the number of hands on board, among whom the Captain was about to distribute arms.__Port Phillip Patriot, October 19. It didn't exist in 1858. Castle Garden existed as a processing station for immigrants between 1855 and 1890. There is no separate set of records for Castle Garden, as there is for Ellis Island. Passenger lists for the Castle Garden time period are available on microfilm so if you know a date of arrival or a ship name you can order the microfilm or have NARA do a lookup for you. Check the complete list of film numbers (NARA or FHC) for ships going to New York after 1820. Find your date (year, month, day if known) and write down the NARA or Family History Centre film number you need http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/filmnos_newyork.shtml For more help with this time period see "Castle Garden: Ships Passenger Lists to New York 1 Aug.1855 - 18 Apr. 1890" at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/castle-garden.htm What makes you think he came in to NY or New Orleans? Have you tried other ports? You can search microfilms for indexes of passengers for the year you want. Most states are indexed, so this will make your job slightly easier. You can order films in to a nearby Family History Centre, or have NARA do the job (once you have precise details) You can get a list of film numbers (NARA & FHC) at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/nara_indexbyport.shtml Scroll down to the state you want and click on the link, then find the film # you need The staff of the National Archives will undertake a search of the original records for a fee but you must know the name of the ship, the date of arrival, and the port of arrival. To find your nearest FHC you can go to http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp You might want to check Steve Morse's one step search engines for passengers at http://stevemorse.org/ Lorine -- Lorine McGinnis Schulze * Olive Tree Genealogy (Ships Passenger Lists) http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ * Naturalization Records http://naturalizationrecords.com/ * Images of Ships Lists http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/ otg@csolve.net or olivetreegenealogy@gmail.com
