Sue, I am very grateful for your very helpful reply. First of all you are quite right about the year, i.e. 1923. I will now ask the National Library in Dublin to request an ILL of the microfilm which you specified. It's a pity that "big-sheet" manifests were replaced by single manifest sheets for the period in question. Perhaps I can find a record of all the passengers from the White Star files if they exist. Failing that there might be records of the Emigration Service or whatever organisation looked after the Harvester scheme. Thanks for introducing me to the Canadian Library and Archive site which is excellent. Regards Aodh

As her "child" also died, might she have died in child birth ? I found the arrival report and voyage report in the Sydney Shipping Gazette. She also carried an extensive cargo (which report I haven't extracted) which can be found on page 274. The Shipping gazette and Sydney general trade list. http://www.nla.gov.au/ferg/issn/14403897.html Volume 12, Number 606 (17 December, 1855) Page 274-275 Arrivals: December 14:-- Prince of Wales, barque, 582 tons, Captain Nolan, from London 5th September. Passengers: Rev. D.P.M. Hulbert M.A., & Mrs. Hulbert and family (4), Mrs. Lewis, Misses Lewis (3), Miss Thompson, Captain Boaze, Mr. & Mrs. Chapman, Mr. & Mrs. Taylor & family (2), Mrs. Boaze, Miss Noster, Masters Halcrow (3), Messrs. Keele, Fitzgerald and Burrows. at Macnamara's Wharf ; Kirchner & Co., agents. The Prince of Wales arrived on Friday, from London, after a fair passage of 100 days, considering the very heavy weather she has had to encounter. On one occasion, in latitude 51.30 S., longitude 34 E., on the 8th November, while scudding in a heavy gale, a sea hit the ship on the starboard side, carrying away nine stauncheons, the topgallant bulwarks, and starboard quarter gallery, and stern plank, besides other damage, and Captain Nolan was compelled to throw 20 tons of cargo overboard to lighten the vessel. The upper works on the starboard side are completely destroyed, and it was most fortunate that the accident was not attended by greater loss. One of the passengers, named Mrs. Halcrow, and her child, died during the passage, as also an infant of the Rev. Mr. Hulbert. No vessels are reported as having been spoken. 3. Dear Sue, You found an answer very quick, as I knew you would! Thank you for the details, I had always wondered how I can find my way in Steve Morse. I know it is like the magic source to everything, but I was baffled by the long list of items. Now I did what I should have done from the beginning, I clicked : About this Website and how to use it and I see it gives me all these wonderful roads to follow and turns to take. Quite splendid! Well, I was wondering if that young man SZER may not after all be a (TEN)SZER, most of the details correspond. But on the passenger list (with your information I could find that, yes) I see he travelled with other members of his family and the names of his mother and of his father do not seem to correspond with what I know already. Still, I asked the son who lives in America if he recognises any of the other names. Till then I haven't got the right answer and I may have to come back to you! I hope this is read also by Ted and Harry, thank you both for giving me the details of the Kaiserin Augusta Victoria. I notice that the Brits, when they took her over and re-named her, let her keep her title of Empress, even giving her another country to rule over. All the best to you, the best bunch of people I know. 3. note: TheShipsList website is quite slow-loading today for some reason .....!! *new* for TheShipsList website http://www.theshipslist.com/ All the new and updated files and databases have been placed on their own page(s) Find them on the front page in between the big arrows --------------> <--------------- At the bottom of each of these pages I have placed links named " previous month " and " next month " so you are able to navigate back and forth between the monthly *new & updated* pages, as I only keep three months of *new* page links on the Home page. New for July 2006 is . . . o Arrivals: o Ship Arrivals at the Port of Saint John, July 1847 (updated) We have been neglecting our 1847 Project a bit, so here is July 1847, New Brunswick, with some additions. We still have to add August, September and October. o Passengers: o Lists from Sydney to San Francisco 1849-1851 (updated) o St. Lawrence Steamboat Co. Passenger Records Pt. 1 - 1819-1825: o Quebec - 11th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 4th July 1824 o Quebec - 12th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 10th July 1824 o Quebec - 13th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 18th July 1824 o Quebec - 14th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 24th July 1824 o Quebec - 15th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 1st August 1824 I've added several 1850 lists from Sydney, Australia, to San Franciso. I suspect that many were headed to the goldfields. Whether they were born or had lived in Australia for some time is not known . . . maybe some had recently gotten off a ship from England and were headed to California to make their fortune ?? I wonder whether they headed back to Australian goldfields a year + later ?? Five more lists for steamboat Quebec for 1824. Once again some interesting lists, especially August 1st 1824, as I found this group of fourteen . . . 82-83 R. Owen & W. Aldgate x x 2/-/- 84-93 John Tate & wife & eight children, seven above 12 & one child under 12 years x x 4/15/- 94-95 John & Emma Haworth x x 1/-/- . . . whose fare and victualing was payable by Irvine, McNaught & Co., Quebec. They must have arrived at Quebec aboard the schooner Gleadon, from Hull, as Irvine and Co. were the Agents, with coincidently 14 passengers had arrived on July 30th. We have had other instances where the ships' Agents were Irvine, McNaught & Co. and they had also paid the steamboat fare for their passengers. (a prime example being from 1819, with the . . Aug 22 Ship Harmony Henry Mossop 58 days Oban, Scotland 253 settlers (to) Irvine, McNaught & Co. in ballast and the Aug 22 Bark Hope Ninian Warden 58 days Oban, Scotland 164 settlers (to) Irvine, McNaught & Co. in ballast were aboard the steamboat New Swiftsure on August 26th 1819). I sure wish other Agents had also done this. Of the settlers arriving at Quebec then taking the steamboats to Montreal (not just 1824), many stayed in Canada, but many also continued to the US, some right away and others migrating at a later date. Please share this *new* for TheShipsList website email, with any other list to which you belong if you think it might be of interest or value to those list members (in other words, on-topic). Enjoy ! 3. Thank you very much, Ted. I see I made a mistake in the subject line, the alleged arrival was in 1920, not 1921. But I gave the correct date in the text. Now comes the problem. According to your description, January 1920 seems to be impossible as date for that arrival. You quote: "in March 1919 she surrendered to Britain and was chartered to the US Shipping Board who used her to repatriate troops from Europe. On 14th Feb.1920 she was chartered to "Cunard who used her on their Liverpool - NY service and on 13th May 1921 she was sold to Canadian Pacific who renamed her EMPRESS OF SCOTLAND." Could she have made a trip to New York in January 1920 under her old name? Did she travel from Liverpool to NY as the Kaiserin Augusta Victoria? Can you tell me the various arrivals in NY in 1920 and 1921? I did not find that arrival on Ellis Island, perhaps I'll have to have another look. 3. Hi Lorine, Do you know of any Almshouse Registries or Almshouse Records for emigration from England to Canada or to the U.S., year 1851? Doesn't necessarily have to be on-line. Any books, too, or microfilm availability with designation of Almshouse/Poorhouse? Did the churches of England (no matter which denomination) keep records of church and/or parish-sponsored emigrations for their charitable sponsorship (with date of departure, etc.) ? Could passengers emigrate with a group name instead of individually be listed on a passenger manifest in year 1851? A lot of questions, I know... Thanks much in advance!
