We do have 1856 . . 1857 reports from the Canadian News and British American Intelligencer http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/Arrivals/Canada1856.htm http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/Arrivals/Canada1857.htm (3 pages) Not sure if they managed to grab the names of those who sailed from Irish ports too, even if the ship stopped there. Murray, were you aware that on the 1901 census it says that Rev. W.C. Windel (at 87 living with son-in law Alex Bell and his wife [WC's daughter] Helena), was born in Ireland February 14th 1814, clearly says he emigrated in 1850 ! Her description and voyage history is here http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/descriptions/ShipsN.html This says in part << NARRUNG was sold by P&O to Eng Hok Fong SS Co., Hong Kong in 1912 and in 1913 was . . .>> Curiously in a web search I found that www.anmm.gov.au (the Australian National Maritime Museum) showed up with a .pdf link . . <<An adjuster's report of the assessment of insurance. claims resulting from an accident to the SS Narrung in. December 1912. . . .>> so something must have happened. And, this link <<Mr. Waine, who began transmitting in about 1898 became well known locally when he received the S.O.S. that was transmitted by the Narrung P.&O. liner, during a gale in the Channel, on Boxing Day 1912. >> so maybe our description needs adjusting. http://www.localhistory.scit.wlv.ac.uk/Museum/Engineering/Electronics/history/radiohistory.htm I see where MargM has weighed in to offer you some Oz research advice, so good luck. You may have heard of British "outbound" passenger lists, but those are unfilmed and unindexed, so you are probably best advised to keep trying at the Oz end. As Marg mentioned, if you know where they settled, so can estimate their port of arrival, you'll be part way there. Still, if you have anyone in / near London who can go to Kew for you, then provided the Powells didn't have the 'fit of the vapours' and delay, but actually sailed again quite soon, then a P&O ship to Australia, from probably Southampton, after December 26th 1912, might not be that hard to find. Searching British records requires a personal visit to Kew . . that, or hiring a researcher. Good luck Sue -- TheShipsList Website http://www.theshipslist.com/

As Sue said, there aren't too many lists before 1865. Here's the only places I can think of that you might try for your time period. There are search engines to search multiple websites for ships going to Canada at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/search_shipscanada.shtml They include most ships lists on the Internet going to Canada and the online InGeneas databases for immigration to Canada 1800s ****************************************** Library & Archives Canada Holdings You might find an ancestor in correspondence of the Secretary of State on immigration for 1817-1857. There are lists of immigrants, mainly Irish, and entry books re immigration, and assisted emigration to British North America. These must be ordered offline . Details are given at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/articles/immcanpre1865.shtml ****************************************** Immigration Projects Online There are a few surviving passenger lists which were kept by shipping agents in the originating country. The Passenger Books of J & J Cooke, Shipping Agents gives sailings from Londonderry to Quebec and St. John New Brunswick from 1847 to 1871. These are online at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/jjcooke.shtml The Hawke Papers, letterbooks of Chief Emigrant Agent Anthony B. Hawke are also available at the Archives of Ontario. They cover the years 1831 to 1892. See the searchable database at http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/db/hawke.htm ****************************************** Newspaper Arrivals TheShipsList website has Quebec ship arrivals extracted from contemporary newspapers. Hello Janet, For help with Providence and Boston passenger lists you might try the Rhode Island and Massachusetts sections here... US Ports of Arrival and Their Available Passenger Lists 1820-1957 http://www.genesearch.com/ports.html But you might first want to search in the Ellis Island Database <http://www.ellisislandrecords.org> as New York is where a lot of Italian immigrants arrived. (Covers NY arrivals 1892-1924.) Also, post-1906 naturalization records almost always give arrival details (date, port, name of ship). For some research tips see... Finding US Naturalization Records (a genealogy guide) http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/naturalizationrecords.html Happy searching. Hi Sue Thanks for the quick reply. How are things in Nova Scotia? Yes, the 1850 emmigration date on the 1911 census is a bit of a puzzle. I don't know why he would have said that. He and Jane were in Delaware during the period 1850-1856. Three of those years he was the pastor of Green Hill Presbyterian Church in Christiana Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware. They returned to Belfast after his US posting and then came to Canada. Thanks for the URLs. I'll certainly be checking them out. Take care. G'day List Can anyone please tell me where I might find information, and or photo's, of the above ship? I have a newsletter printed on board during WW2 which belongs to my father. Cheers..........Bob in Oz
Good afternoon from Riderville The Reverend, along with his wife Jane and son William, came to eastern Ontario from Belfast after he was posted as a missionary to Canada by the Presbyterian Church of Ireland on August 25, 1856. Might anyone be able to suggest a typical route for that time? I'm not sure where to start looking for possible passenger lists. Thanks very much and have a great day. Hi Margaret There are some passenger arrivals to QLD ports indexed to 1925 in book format Only other index I know of is to the Port of Fremantle 1895 -1925 I checked this and are a couple Charles POWELLs 1913+ but no Harriet and a few Mr & Mrs POWELLs > I believe my grandparents Charles and Harriet Powell > were on that ship. > On the off chance I checked the indexes of ' The Times' . Thought maybe there might have been a mention of the passengers but damage to the shop and its cargo only were of concern ! http://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/databases/fromhomefaq.cfm You need a readers ticket to access these data bases > Is there a site that you can go into and put in their > names and find out what > ship they actually came out to Australia on. > Do you know which port they arrived at ? When did Castle Garden close to immigration? In looking up my grandfather John BECKER who came, I believe, in 1888, it showed passengers coming to Castle Garden in 1894. I'm just curious. Florence
Hello, My Italian ancestors came to the United States in the early 1900's. They settled near Providence RI, and assume they came into the U.S. through ports at Boston or Providence. Are there any resources to research Italian immigration shipslists to U.S. from 1900-1940? Many thanks, Janet Prata
Hi Bob, The only on line photo I can find is at http://www.armed-guard.com/393.html The JOHN HART was scrapped at Tacoma, Washington in 1966. This will be a long shot but I am trying to move one step backwards to another generation, I have Dunn's in Colchester county Nova Scotia and in the census they are listed as Scottish as their orgin, I would think in the 1790's is the most likely time that they would have come to Canada and probably into Pictou County, this is of course speculation but who knows I might just hit the jackpot, the name that interests me most would be a John or James or John James Dunn, if there is anyone that can add anything, please contact me at Jennill@cogeco.ca Thanks Kim Barlow

Hi List, I have just joined in the hope that someone can help me with the passenger list for the SS Narrung which ran into a storm in December 1912 and had to return to England. It was on its way to Australia. I believe my grandparents Charles and Harriet Powell were on that ship. Is there a site that you can go into and put in their names and find out what ship they actually came out to Australia on. Thanks. Heidi From the NYT of April 5, 1956 "Gen. W.C. Langfitt Mil. Tr. (1,261), From Bremerhaven, Mar. 26 1P.M. will Dock W. 46th St." The following day, April 6, the Times notes it arrived "yesterday" I can find no mention of the Captain but she was a military transport vessel. Hi Sarah, I managed to notice your email as it came in as it was the only one in the download, otherwise your date setting would have banished it to the top of my inbox forever . . .see Jan 2nd 2000 . . . you might want to correct your date. Hi everyone, I have found my maternal greatgrandmother Clementina (Izzi) Zarli and her two sons Alberto and Guiseppe Zarli through Ellis Island. They arrived through New York in 1905 and were going to her husband Beniamino Zarli who lived at Fisher's Lane in Philadelphia, PA. I know that she and her sons left through the Port of Marseilles, France. Their last name was mispelled - Zarle. In the 1930 Census the date that they arrived is notated as 1903. I realize that reported dates were not always correct. I have searched everywhere that I know of and cannot find Beniamino known as Benjamin, Benjamino and Ben or Bennie Zarli or Zarle. According to the 1930 Census in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania he arrived here in 1900. I tried a few years before and a few years after. I tried the Port of New York and also Philadelphia. I would appreciate any information, suggestions or help in finding him. Thanks in advance for any help or information. Rose :) I
I am doing some family research into my great grandfather, Capt. James Cairns Bogle who was employed by the City Line. I have a medal which states that he received it from the French Government in 1886 whilst serving as a lieutenant on City of Edinburgh. As I have obtained your details from The Ships List, can you advise me how I can find out more about his career and also any info re the medal? Thankyou in anticipation for your assistance. I am trying to find a passenger list of the General Langfitt from March-April 1956. I know it landed in NYC on April 5, 1956 My father came over on that ship. I would also like to know the name of the ships captain, or the Admiral? I am not sure how long it was at sea, or when it left the Bremerhaven Germany Port. Any help or direction would be wonderful Heidi
