Hi, I want to thank everybody for the help offered concerning the "Ann". My sources are * the report of the constable who put my ggg-grandfather aboard this ship, which contains shipname "Ann", name of the captain (Horstmann" and date of departure in Bremerhaven (August 4th, 1846). * The bill for the passage, which contains the ships name, month and year. ("Ann", July 1846) * I found a ship with Captain Horstmann one year later in Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild: "Ship Ann, Bremen, Germany to Baltimore, Maryland, 10 June 1847, I, J. Horstmann, Master of the Ship Ann of Bremen........." So far I have not been able to find my ancestor Christian Pape on the other side of the ocean or to find any more information on the ship. Any hints in which direction to search or where I can obtain the Passengerlist or shipsinfo are welcome. Tina, The list will be on microfilm. There are 2 separate indexes for Baltimore for the years 1833-1866. One lists passengers on federal lists, the second lists passengers on city lists. You can't just check one - if you check one and don't find your ancestor, you have to check the other one. The David Hoadley was a packet ship that sailed mainly in the Antwerp to New York trade. Here is the report of her arrival on September 15, 1854 New York Times, September 16, 1854 Arrived New York, Friday, September 15 Ship David Headley [sic], [captain] Magna, Antwerp and Portsmouth 30 ds., with mdse and 397 passengers to [agents] E. D. Hurlbut & Co., and Post & Ryerson. The D. H. has had 2 births and 1 death on this passage. This looks like a normal voyage which took 30 days from a stop at Portsmouth, England. However the Montreal Gazette, August 1, 1854 noted: NEW YORK EMIGRANT SHIP PUT BACK The American ship David Hoadley of New York, Captain J. W. Magna, has put back into Southampton leaky, with 407 emigrants from Antwerp. The ship has sustained no damage, but a part of her cargo will have to be taken out to come at the leak. Allowing a minimum of two weeks for the news to reach the Montreal Gazette, the Hoadley must have reached Southampton before July 15. So she probably left Antwerp around July 1 if she passed Southampton and put back (possibly earlier). So what looks like a 30 day passage was probably nearer 75 days - but the arrival report doesn't say anything about it :-) -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------

The brig lydia h cole sailed from matamaoras to new york in 1864 carrying passengerss Marvin Newton Rogers, his wife and children. One of the children died, the ship was becalmed for many days, and the report I have is that the crew mutinied because there was a corpse on board. There may have been a trial. Do you have any information about this possible event or where I can research further? I cannot find mention of it it in the NYT index, although there are other mutinies reported. I am prepared to believe that it is perhaps a fabrication or an exaggeration, but I'd like to put this bit of family history to rest. Sincerely, Mary M. White

Hi Sue, I think Haws book is in error on this ship description (his 2nd edition says 1913). Schell Register says - 1913 sold by P & O to Mexico SS Co, Hong Kong (Eng Hok Fong SS Co, managers) renamed MEXICO CITY. Rabson & O'Donoghue - P & O, A Fleet History is more specific and says - 16th Apr.1913 sold by P & O to Mexico SS Co renamed MEXICO CITY Seems like the description needs altering.
