I recently had a question about the arrival of the Orphan. Here is what I found so it will be in TSL archives. Orphan is not a useful search key on a genealogy newsgroup :-) Arrival report New York Times October 15 1853 Arrived New York October 14 Ship Orphan, [captain] Williams, Bremen Sept 1, 280 passengers to [agent] Poppe & Co. Vessel to [owner] Wm. Tyson. The O had four deaths and one birth on the passage, Sept. 6 passed Fair Island, in company with ship G. Green, of New-Orleans, bound W. It was unusual to list both agent and owner but I have seen it before. Fair Isle is between the Orkney and Shetland Islands (at least one emigrant ship ran into it) so the ship took the northern passage, north of Scotland, rather than sailing down the North Sea and through the English Channel. The Orphan was built in Essex, Connecticut in 1845. -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings. Hope someone can help me with a mystery. My grandmother, Agata Karalute, is listed on one of the Ellis Island Ship's Registers with two different ship names. It appears the original entry says the SS Zeeland sailing from Antwerp on 19 June 1909. The entry is crossed out and replaced with the SS Oceanic sailing from Southampton on 23 June 1909. I checked the Cimorelli Database which lists NO ENTRY for the SS Oceanic arriving in New York City in June 1909. It lists NYC arrival dates for the SS Oceanic on 5 May 1909 and 28 July 1909 but nothing in June. Does anyone have any information or suggestions for further research? Thanks in advance for the help. Thanks for response to my last note....but I hope to find ships that came into this area before 1820. My families were well established in the 1700s and actually left the Tyrell County area in 1825 to move West. alyce matthews
Good Evening Listmembers, I am looking for the port of arrival for a ship that came to America on 28 Mar 1884. I received an email from a person that the ships name was the Habsburg. Could anyone tell me if there was even a ship by that name? If so, where was the port of arrival. Thank you for everything in advance, Lori L Hoper --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Then you can order the film in to your nearest FHC or have NARA do the lookup for you. You can order National Archives (NARA) forms online at http://www.archives.gov/global_pages/inquire_form.html To find your nearest FHC you can go to http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp To search many online ships lists to NC go to http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tousa_nsc.shtml You can search list by list, or use the online search engine which will search multiple Internet sites for ships to North Carolina. There is also a list of published works with passenger lists to NC and CDs that may help you find that elusive ancestor. Good luck! Please ignore the dates/info that don't apply to your question The National Archives of Canada (NAC) holds immigration records from 1865 to 1935. Unfortunately the records before 1925 are not indexed. To find a passenger you will need to know an exact date of arrival. There is no easy way to search Canadian arrival records for the unindexed period other than reading microfilm. Ships are on the reel, in order of arrival. You can find the details at this URL http://www.archives.ca/02/020202_e.html If you want to order filmed passenger lists (remember they aren't indexed!), a list of NAC microfilm numbers for passenger lists to Canada 1865-1922 can be found at http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/filmnos_can1865.shtml If you are patient, you will soon (?) be able to search these unindexed years! You might want to check my free online project to fill in the 1847-1892 index gap for passenger arrival records in New York. This project consists of 3 sets of records: 1. NY Times extracts for ship arrivals and passenger names 2. Images (and some accompanying transcripts) of actual passenger lists in this time period 3. NY Almshouse records for 1855-1858 (contains year of arrival and ship name) The complete index of NY Times years and shipping news extracts is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/nytimes.htm Images of ships passenger lists for these Unindexed NY years are online at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/ The Almshouse Records start at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/ny_alms1855.htm Also check online ships and links to ships in this time period starting att http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tousa_ny182549.shtml You can get this passenger list on microfilm if you haven't found it online. Both NARA & LDS have films with the New York passenger lists. Ships are on the reels in order of date of arrival, so all you need to do is find the film number that has your arrival date on it. Then order it in to a nearby Family History Centre, or request a lookup from NARA. When you get the film, scroll through to find your date but if your ship isn't there, be sure to check more thoroughly on the film - the lists aren't always exactly in chronological order. Do others have listings from people who arrived in NC but small passenger ships?
Hi I am trying to find out more about William Bartlett shoemaker who emigrated to New York between 1870 when he married Ellen Preston in London and 1880 when he appears on teh census with his wife and small son. I have tried theshipslist web page and found one William Bartlett on the "Lucy" but this is not the correct one. Can anyone help in suggesting where I look next. I am also looking for Caleb Bennett who family history has it sailed from St Catherine's Dock in London to St Johns, New Brunswick in 1846. His wife Elizabeth with her daughters Ann and Sarah who sailed to join Caleb I am not sure exactly when they left but it was about a year or two later. Any help with where I can find them would be greatly appreciated. Eveline
