    1. ADMIN - AOL info
    2. Sue Swiggum
    3. There have been so many instances of RootsWeb list mail being blocked by AOL, or causing AOL list members to be bounced off their subscribed lists because of the way AOL manages mail. It causes big headaches for list members, list admins and RootsWeb. Hopefully following the guide below will help with all your RootsWeb lists. The information below, for AOL list members, was written by Joan Young who is the admin for the AOLers-Rootsweb-L@rootsweb.com list. Sue _______________________________________________________________ Under the Mail link on the AOL toolbar > block unwanted mail > sender filter > Use a custom sender list > Two choices: block all mail from senders and domains listed below, or allow only the senders and domains listed below. They can't use the option to block all mail except the senders and addresses below with RootsWeb lists but they can use the block all mail from senders and domains listed below. The choices are: Allow mail from all senders Allow mail only from AOL members Allow mail only from people I know Block mail from all senders Use a custom sender list Of the above, the only choices that work with RootsWeb lists are allow mail from all senders and Use a custom sender list. If they use a custom sender list they can ONLY block addresses of people who are NOT posters to their subscribed lists! With a custom sender list the choices are: blocked mail should be: permanently deleted delivered to spam folder RootsWeb list users should always choose to have a spam folder so that they can check for misdirected list mail and click THIS IS NOT SPAM to move it to their inbox if they find any.

    1. ADMIN - changes to TheShipsList
    2. Sue Swiggum
    3. Hi listers, Many of you probably belong to other RootsWeb email discussion lists, whose list names begin with letters lower in the alphabet than TSL, so you probably have become aware of RootsWeb lists "migrating" to new list software, called mailman. To date, the migration schedule indicates that TheShipsList should be migrating on Monday September 11th, probably in the late afternoon US Mountain Daylight time zone, GMT -0600 (which will make it the morning of September 12th in eg. Australia and New Zealand) http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html It is my understanding that for most listers, the changes will be fairly transparent, however there are a few things to note, of which AOL users especially, should be aware. -- Quite a few list members, myself included, subscribe in both List Mode (L) and Digest Mode (D). The mailman software does not allow for any ONE email address to be subscribed to both modes, so the default should be to List Mode only (apparently there have been some cases where the reverse was true) . . . this can be corrected to whichever you wish. Also, should you still wish to subscribe to both list and digest Modes, then an alternative is to use another address, such as gmail or hotmail, for example. -- The current default for Digest is MIME, which depending on your personal email software and settings, views in different ways. The default for mailman will be inline Plain Text, so when you receive the first Digest after migration and would prefer to receive subsequent Digests in MIME, write to my admin address TheShipsList-admin@rootsweb.com to request the change. I believe my admin address will be included in the Digest too. -- One of the changes which will affect AOL list members is the list posting address. Mailman software will still happily accept the current address TheShipsList-L@rootsweb.com as well as the new address, without the " -L" TheShipsList@rootsweb.com, but as the new address will be reflected in the email, I am posting an additional AOL info message. Once all lists have been migrated and the dust settles, list members will have access to pages where they can manage their subscriptions themselves, including a "no mail" option, which hasn't been available with the current software. This is NOT available yet, but will be a boon for anyone going on holiday or a business trip, as they can stop delivery in ther absence and just turn it on again on their return. As with the current software, mailman will NOT accept HTML email or even inline text attachments, so just remember that before you "send" mail to all RootsWeb lists. If you do send such mail you will be automatically advised that your email is "pending" delivery to the list and you have the opportunity to delete it and start again. I've been literally reading thousands of emails by other listowners, to try to learn as much as I can before migration, but as with all things, I think I will probably just have to learn by experience. 1. Emigration from Hull to New York in 1819
    2. Harry Dodsworth
    3. While looking for information on an 1819 arrival I saw this note. Montreal Gazette, June 16, 1819 The celebrated ship Isabella, which bore the flag of Capt. Ross, in the late voyage to the Polar Regions, sailed lately from Hull, for America, with 200 English passengers, men, women and children. The emigration from that part is prodigious, and continually increasing. They are of all descriptions, but chiefly persons who possess a little property. The loss of so many valuable citizens, in this season of national difficulty, cannot easily be estimated. The Montreal Gazette was not a chatty paper in 1819. It was a small weekly paper and printed in both English and French. Hull was quite an important port for emigrants from Yorkshire and area until about 1840. However with the opening of railways, emigrants started to cross England by train and sail from Liverpool which was more conveniently situated. The Isabella was an Arctic whaler which was the leading ship in an expedition in 1818 to Lancaster Sound in Northern Canada under Captain John Ross. -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------

    1. Ship Teutonic, arriving New York 1890
    2. Debbie Bert
    3. I am looking for the ship my great grandfather came over on. His name was Joseph Herskowitz. It has many variations on the spelling. New York immigration records show a Josef Hersckowiz that came over from Austria/Hungary on the Teutonic that arrived in New York on June 19, 1890. (micro film no. 1027786) I am looking for the passenger list to get more info. According to the 1900 New York Census my Joseph came over in 1890 and was born in Feb. 1864. From the info on the census his wife Ida Markovitz Herskowitz came over in 1891. I don't know if they married before or after they came over. There is an Ida Hirschkovitz on the Ship Normannia that arrived in New York on June 28, 1890 on that same film no. I am interested in her too. Help from anyone with access to the passenger lists would be greatly appreciated. Debbie

    3. Jeffrey I am not a NY harbour expert so have copied the list on this so they can give you more details on what being outside the Bar is. As for the other questions -- I would say, yes, the ship encountered some bad weather off Newfoundland and spent 15 days in that area in bad seas. In company with the Edith I am sure just means that both of the ships were in the same area. I tried looking for some account or report on the bad weather but did not find anything. Regards.. 3. Hi Debbie - It appears the HENRY CLAY was sailing at least 7 years earlier as well. I have a record of 32 ships that sailed from Plymouth Eng. in the year 1820 from a researcher in the UK a number of years ago. This entry has the ship leaving London on 21 Nov. 1820, called at Plymouth - then bound for Virginia. Good luck on your researches... 3. Marion The "official" passenger list was published in the Times of June 19, 1896. There is a Mr. Graham listed. The Times of June 20, has the funeral information. "Whole of island attended funeral today, including Vice-Consul Bonar, mayor, and officials of navy. Service extremely impressive and sympathetic. Position of Drummond Castle uncertain, but reported by fishermen lying east of Ushant. Lighthouse keeper will investigate and telegraph direct. Wreaths placed on coffins in names of Sir Donald Currie, friends, and inhabitants, as this grand ceremony has been held for all lost in the wreck, whether recovered or not." The item also talks about some bodies were recovered and were buried on Molene. Times, June 23 lists W. Graham in the updated passenger list of those from Cape Town. Times, June 24 says some buried at Ploudalmezean. Regards..
