    1. [TSL] Donaldson Line
    2. SIMON WHEATLEY
    3. Hi I wonder if you would be able to help me or give me any advice please? My g.grandfather I am told was a ship's captain for the Donaldson Line. Possibly in the 1880's and 1890's (as he is supposed to have had a daughter born on sea in about 1889/90 or 91). His name was Francis/Frank Courtney (McCourtney). He lived in Greenock most of the time. I haven't been able to find the birth at sea (apparently according to stories on the equator) nor anything that tells me that Francis was indeed a Ship's Captain! I can't find him or his family in 1891 so wondered if he was at sea and if there was a census taken at sea? He had at least one daughter "adopted" by a ships engineer called James McKenzie but I can't find anything on him or his wife Jessie at all! Please are you able to help at all? Are there any records for the Donaldson Line that would list ship's captains or the crew? Would they have kept records of births at sea? So many questions... I look forward to hearing from you, with thanks

    3. <<If you are talking about Ancestry.com's online CG database, it agrees with the filmed lists.>> Could someone with access to Ancestry please do a lookup for me. I am trying to find the ship that Joseph Herskowitz came to America on. He came from the Hungary-Austria region. One census even lists them as coming from Germany. I have eliminated the ship Werra already, that Joseph isn't the right age. Joseph or Josef Herskowitz (have found this surname spelled different ways) b. Feb. 1864. He married Ida Markovitz, she was born 1866. I don't know if they married before they came or if they married here in America. The census records show him coming to America in 1890 and her in 1891. Their children were born in New York. I did find a Josef Hersckowiz listed as coming to america on the ship Teutonic, arriving in New york on June 19, 1890. (ship no. 135, film no. 1027786). Also on that same roll of film is an Ida Herschkovitz arriving on the ship Normannia on June 28, 1890. Also a Josef Herschkwitz on the ship Rugia, arriving Dec. 22, 1891 , film no. 1027626. I have not been able to find the passenger lists for the above ships to figure out if it is my Joseph. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks deb

    3. Hi Don and Diane, Don you forgot to mention when the Copeland ran aground. Iceland and Scotland were (still are) big trading partners, so Icelanders nearly always "ferried" to Scotland to embark on transatlantic steamers. 1. [TSL] births on ships to New Zealand 19th century
    2. Ainslie Pyne
    3. Hi folks, I am looking for more information about my grandfather James Jesse Stroud who was born on a ship bound for New Zealand (I do have a birth date). I'm hoping there are lists of infants born at sea that I might be abkle to access to try and sift through in the hope of finding more. Apparently on arrival at Bluff (most southerly port of New Zealand, near Invercargill) his mother (an actress/singer travelling on the ship) handed the infant to people on the wharf by the name of Carter and she disappeared. I did hear some story about the birth father being the son of 'landed gentry' who didn't want to take on the responsibility of a wife who was an entertainer and her child and she didn't want to be hampered by an illegitimate child. The child was adopted by the Stroud family of Invercargill. This would have been sometime in the last half of the 1800s. I believe my grandfather travelled extensively in his late teens and early 20s before joining the British Army and serving in India where he met his wife to be who was part of the household of a British Army officer. I understand he was leader of the Vice Roy's Orchestra as well as taking part in regular army activities. The couple married and moved to New Zealand to live. Jim, a gifted musician, songwriter, composer, and string instrument teacher, had initially gone off to England to try and find out more about his birth family but I didn't ever hear if he was successful. He joined the British Songwriters Society. He also served in Gallipoli and France with the ANZACs before returning to New Zealand. Jim kept me entertained with his stories of exploits in India and in Europe - he was a great storywriter so I'm not too sure how many of his tales are correct - although I am sure there was some truth in them! Thanks in anticipation, Cheers Ainslie (in Adelaide, South Australia)
