Hope those who celebrate it are enjoying the Canada Day Weekend! And a happy July 4th to those who celebrate that special day. Olive Tree Genealogy added more ships passenger lists for outbound ships leaving New York. USA did not keep its outbound lists so finding any is very challenging. Hello Drew Finding a passenger list to Canada in the time period you want is a challenge. Ships Passenger lists to Canada did not have to be archived until 1865 so pre 1865 are few and far between. You may want to check out the chart at http://www.olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/canada/ It is 2 columns - pre 1865 and post 1865. Each column has a list of every project or website which has ships lists or alternatives plus links to them. It's quite extensive, and pretty much covers all available resources. Best of luck Lorine On 26 Jun 2008 at 7:01, Drew Comeau wrote: > Hello List, > I'm new to this list here, but am familiar as I am a member > of the Wellington County and Islay, Scotland rootsweb > lists. Hello List, I'm new to this list here, but am familiar as I am a member of the Wellington County and Islay, Scotland rootsweb lists. Shot in the dark here, but I was wondering if anybody might have a record of passenger lists for any of the following ships from Scotland to Quebec in 1848. I am looking for McMillans and McIntyres that settled in Arthur Township, Wellington County. I believe I have checked every websites for ships and immigrants, but to no avail. I'm hoping maybe someone's ancester came over on one of these ships and may have a list or some knowledge and I can narrow the search or hit the lottery. My direct ancestor's were leaving the Isle of Islay. The closest ports would have been out of Glasgow/Greenock. I am not aware of any ships leaving for North America out of Islay. If anyone has a list of ships in 1848 to Montreal from Scotland, I would appreciate if you could list. Thanks in Advance. Port: Glasgow 1. Albion of Greenock(-made two trips to Quebec that year.) 2. Pesina of Cambeltown 3. Cambria of Greenock 4. Circassian of Greenock 5. Favourite of Greenock 6. Mary of Greenock 7. Jessie Stephens of Irvine 8. Blonde of Montreal 9. Jamaica 10. Tay 11. Canada of Greenock 12. Erromanga of Greenock 13. Favourite of Greenock Port; Lock Laxford(probably Greenock or Glasgow) 1. Greenock of Glasgow
Could someone please tell me if there is an image of the ship "Zieten" available online somewhere? It sailed in 1912 from Rotterdam to Portland,Maine carrying among it's passengers my husband's grandparents. Regards, Virginia
Margaret, This may all be old news to you so ignore me if that is so. We are researching my husband's great grandfather - Allan Carmichael Wylie - who died just as his daughter (my husband's grandmother) was born. We knew he was an engineer on a steamship but had thought this was on a ship between Glasgow and Liverpool. Recently we found his death registration - "A.Wylie, M, 40, Apoplexy, 2/11/72, Bertha, official number 65274, 28/11/72". We followed this up at the Liverpool Maritime Museum, using microfilms : Lloyd's List London Sep-Oct 1972 & Nov-Dec 1872. However, we then found reference at the museum to Allan's older daughters being admitted to the Liverpool Seamen's Orphanage soon after his death - this said that Allan Wylie was Chief Engineer on the SS Virago. This led us to research the whereabouts of the SS Virago (official number 65215) at the time of Allan's death, again using microfilms at Liverpool Maritime Museum: Lloyd's List London 1872. >From these two lists of the voyages of SS Bertha and SS Virago it seems they were both in the Suez Canal at the time Allan died. He was Chief Engineer on the Virago but his death was registered as a passenger on Bertha. SS Bertha arrived back in London on 21 November 1872 and reported his death on 28 November 1972. SS Virago arrived in London on 7 December 1872. >From the Maritime History Archive in Newfoundland we have received copies of the crew agreement and extracts from the log book for the Virago's earlier voyage to India Aug -Dec 1871, listing Allan Wylie (certificate number 6347) as 1st engineer. We cannot find the whereabouts of the agreement and/or log book for the Virago 1872 but we have the log book entry for the Bertha which describes Allan's death and burial at sea by the master of the Bertha on the afternoon of his death, 2 Nov 1872. We don't know why or when he transferred ships. The Virago crew agreement 1871 names Allan's previous ship in 1871 as the 'Oceanic of Liverpool'. We have found online a ship of this name with the official number 63332 and reference to its maiden voyage to New York in early 1871. Also on the web a transcription of its passenger list for that voyage. Does anyone know any more about the ship and any records which might exist and which might allow us to track Allan's career back further? We cannot find any crew agreements for the Oceanic. Any help gratefully received! Eileen Cowen

On Sept 24, she was reported at Madras from London. On Dec 6, she is reported "Off The Wight, Dec. 5--The Virago, steamer, from Calcutta." As for Bertha... on Nov 14, 1872 the Times shipping news reported her arriving at Lisbon. On Nov 23, in a column called "The Suez Canal" was this little item. "Messrs. A. Laming and Co., shipping agents, Leadenhall-street, write to us with reference to a statement contained in the letter of our Malta Correspondent which appeared in The Times of Thursday last. In mentioning the vessels that had arrived in the island he said that the Bertha was 40 days from Calcutta to Malta. We are requested to state that this time included six days' detention in unloading and loading at Madras, thus reducing the passage to 34 days." Regards.. Hi Kathy, To confirm Sue's email, there was no ship named WANASARI, but this was the WONOSARI. WONOSARI 1952 7,583 gross tons, length 507ft x beam 66.1ft, single screw, speed 16 knots, accommodation for 12 passengers. Built 1952 by Hpwaldstwerke AG, Hamburg for Rotterdam Lloyd, Rotterdam. In 1970 she was transferred to the Nedlloyd fleet and in 1971 transferred to Ruys Transportation NV and placed on the Holland - China - Java service. 1977 sold to Uniocean Line, Singapore renamed LUCILLE. On 21st Sep.1980 she was trapped at Basra during the Iran - Iraq war and laid up there with war damage. 1982 declared a constructive total loss. Hi Listers, As I sit daily and "lurk" behind the scenes here, am amazed of how many sailing vessiles there have been documented and now are at our finger tips..and the vairied sizes that floated in the big bath tub of which we call the "POND"...i am an sea going person since the age of 5, not afraid of man nor beast, but to think of putting the life and limb on some of these ships, scares the pants off of me. Good job by nice folks to make our days happy in gained knowledge. ~Linda~ Willow Creek,CA.
Hello Everyone, I have just discovered that my Father William Allan aged 19 arrived in Sydney Australia on the ship RMS Manuka on the 19th February 1919 as an unassisted immigrant. He departed from Wellington, New Zealand. I have spent many years trying to find exactly when he arrived in this country and now am hoping that this is the right William Allan. I have searched many other William Allan's but always the wrong person. Would anyone have the passenger list, or any information on the Ship. Thanks very much, Regards Desni
