    3. Hi Jim, The only surviving list for the JANE DUFFUS 1843 is just a partial list http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/index.htm Jane Duffus 1843, from Glasgow to Quebec (partial list) http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/janeduffus1843.htm The only reason we even have that is because the Captain got into trouble. 3. Hi Barbara, We have learned through anecdotal information that there is always some seed of truth to every family oral history. The bark (barque) CAMPERDOWN made several trips to Canada. Bruce Elliott makes mention of several of those passengers in 1819 in his book . . mentioned here on this steamboat list http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/1819ns10sep.htm http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/Arrivals/ships1819d.htm#camperdown Althought that vessel sailed several times to Quebec, it seems that 1819 was the only time it carried a large number of emigrants. Here are the Lloyds details from Gilbert Provost's website http://www.reach.net/~sc001198/ShipsC.htm CAMPERDOWN - 1819-1826 (Green Book - Underwriters) Master: Captain J. Evans (1819-20); Captain W. 1. [TSL] 'MAMBARE' out of Sydney to South Pacific Islands
    2. Jim Burton
    3. AB 'Banjo' Paterson travelled on the Burns Philp Steamer MAMBARE on a round trip to the South Pacific Islands departing Sydney late 26 May 1902. Also aboard were 12 Australian ex-Boer War Veterans travelling to take up Burns Philp land allotments on South Santo in the then New Hebrides. In researching the names of those 14 men of whom 11 stayed in Santo and 3 returned to Sydney, I'd like to obtain a copy of the MAMBARE's Passenger List for that particular voyage of the MAMBARE. Can anyone advise me where to look next? If there are any 'Banjo' Patterson enthusiasts out there, upon your request, I will send you a photocopy of his article about his trip as published in the SMH September 1902. Hopefully one good deed deserves a ready response. Cheers for now Jim Burton

    3. Hi Jim, None of those name spellings fit with any names on TheShipsList website. If we are lucky enough to have your Thomas and John included in the St. Lawrence steamboat Co. records, they might have been mistranscribed, or hard to read eg. Co----? We have transcribed all the surviving lists for 1823 .. http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/1819_20index.htm (take a moment to read the blurb about the records) We also have the newspaper reports of ships arriving at Quebec http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/Arrivals/index.htm#canada This was the first 1823 Quebec arrival from Londonderry . . . and ONLY one for 1823 June 18 ship Cossack Thompson 29 Apr Londonderry 313 settlers to Wm. Pemberton, salt The same ship in 1822 along with others July 01 ship Cossack Thompson 19 May Londonderry 275 passengers to order / cargo bricks and tar July 04 brig Betsey Cowan 20 May Londonderry 162 settlers to P. Burnett / in ballast July 06 brig Kent Sterling 22 May Londonderry 157 settlers to order / in ballast Aug 21 ship Hercules Power 13 July Londonderry 130 settlers to Irvine & Co. / salt and goods Aug 23 brig Janet Dunlop Snowden 30 June Londonderry 63 settlers to Irvine & Co. / coals Don't discount 1821 either . . the first vessel for Quebec didn't leave until May 19th Passengers arriving at Quebec were able to remain on board for at least forty-eight hours, so you often see them embarking on the steamboats by about the 3rd day after arrival at Quebec. Sometimes they spent some time in Quebec to earn some money ? because of illness ? before proceeding inward. New for June 2008 is . . . o Passengers: o CANADA & US o Chambly - 28th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 27th September 1829 o Chambly - 29th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 1st October 1829 o Chambly - 30th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 6th October 1829 o Chambly - 31st trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 10th October 1829 o Chambly - 32nd trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 16th October 1829 o Chambly - 33rd trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 21st October 1829 o Chambly - 34th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 27th October 1829 o Chambly - 35th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 3rd November 1829 o Chambly - 36th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 7th November 1829 o Chambly - 37th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 14th November 1829 The last of the CHAMBLY lists for 1829. I'll be starting the 2nd half of the JOHN MOLSON lists next. 1829 was a wonderful year for steamboat records as there are surviving records for FIVE boats. If you've checked the index page, you'll probably think I can't count as there are only four shown . . . but, there is another on the next microfilm reel, so I'll add that (the ST. LAWRENCE) at a later date. :-} o Passengers: o SOUTH AUSTRALIA o barque Constantine, from Plymouth to Port Adelaide 1st July 1855 o ship Octavia, from Southampton to Port Adelaide 19th July 1855 o ship South Sea, from Plymouth to Port Adelaide 30th July 1855 Lots and lots of young women on these three ships, most of them Irish. The SOUTH SEA even has a lot of single young men, also mostly Irish, which was unusual as the regulations ca. 1853 states in part >>> 2. The separation of husbands and wives and of parents from children under 18 will in no case be allowed. 3. Single women under 18 cannot be taken without their parents, unless they go under the immediate care of some near relatives. Single women over 35 years of age are ineligible. Single women with illigitimate children can in no case be taken. 4. Single men cannot be taken unless they are sons in eligible families, containing at least a corresponding number of daughters. >>> (you can find the full transcript of the qualifications for assisted passage, on the index page .. http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/SAassistedindex.htm ) The SOUTH SEA even includes two Mariners . . . I've never seen that before. Whether they were "distressed seamen" given passage to a safe port, or seamen landed as immigrants, I don't know. Now ... as well as my standard request (below) for corrections or additions to any of the lists, I send out an S.O.S. for help with the OCTAVIA list !! There was no surviving "official" list, only the newspaper list. Robert and I have done our absolute best to fill in the gaps which began with "Mr. & Mrs. XXXX and xx children," so please pass this *new* email to any list you belong to where we might be able to get some help from those listers . . Robert, a reminder for you to send it to AUS-SAGEN <grin> If anyone is able to furnish corrections or additions (like maiden names) to any of the South Australia Lists, please write to Robert or myself. Please share this *new* for TheShipsList website email, with any other list to which you belong if you think it might be of interest or value to those list members (in other words, on-topic). Enjoy ! 1. [TSL] Sailing Ships from Londonderry to Quebec from 1822-1829
    2. Jim White
    3. Hi List: I am looking for sailing ships from Londonderry to Quebec. I believe the exact year was 1823, but it could have been 1822, or 1824-1829. I believe the ship would have left Londonderry in the early spring, and arrived Quebec approx mid June-mid July. If available, I am also looking for the passenger list for these ships. The family name I am looking for is "Cobane/Cobean/Cobaen/Cobain". The family heads were Thomas and John. Thomas and John Cobean received their Land Petition on 04 March 1824. Thus, I assume they must have arrived the previous summer (1823) , in order to be in Ontario on 04 March 1824. The last child was born in Ireland, on 21 April 1821, thus the emigration would have to be after this date, but before 04 March 1824. Other family members may have arrived later, as they settled on their land in 1829. It is possible they came, and stayed with Thomas and John, but there is no record of this. Their names were William, Robert, Edward, Mary, and possibly father John & their mother (name unknown). All help and suggestions with the above request will be deeply appreciated. Kindest Regards Jim White Naples, Florida
