A few days ago I was trying to find a picture of the 3 masted barque Perseverance to add to a short “History” I was writing about her loss and the death of my Great(x4) Granduncle James Marshall who was her Master. I have now completed this project and it may be of interest to some others on this list. www.family-trees.org.uk/genealogy/histories/perseverance.php all the best Richard R. J. B. 3. *new* for TheShipsList website http://www.theshipslist.com/ First . . . we are thrilled to let you know that once again, TheShipsList has been chosen as one of the "101 Best Web Sites" which is to be published in the September 2008 issue of Family Tree Magazine . . . it goes on sale on July 15th. I guess we must be doing something right as this is the 5th time since 2003 (in 2005 the award was for the "101 Best Undiscovered Web Sites" instead) :-} http://www.theshipslist.com/awards.htm All the new and updated files and databases have been placed on their own page(s) Find them on the front page in between the big arrows --------------> <--------------- At the bottom of each of these pages I have placed links named " previous month " and " next month " so you are able to navigate back and forth between the monthly *new & updated* pages, as I only keep three months of *new* page links on the Home page. New for July 2008 is . . . o Passengers: o CANADA & US o John Molson - 22nd trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 4th August 1829 o John Molson - 23rd trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 7th August 1829 o John Molson - 24th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 12th August 1829 o John Molson - 25th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 15th August 1829 o John Molson - 26th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 20th August 1829 o John Molson - 27th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 25th August 1829 o John Molson - 28th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 30th August 1829 The first seven lists for the 2nd half of the JOHN MOLSON lists for 1829. o Passengers: o SOUTH AUSTRALIA o ship Aliquis, from Liverpool to Port Adelaide 12th August 1855 o ship Admiral Boxer, from Liverpool to Port Adelaide 23rd August 1855 o barque Lismoyne, from Southampton to Port Adelaide 23rd August 1855 o ship Switzerland, from Liverpool to Port Adelaide 12th September 1855 o ship Thomas Arbuthnot, from Plymouth to Port Adelaide 12th September 1855 Five lists this time, with brings us to thirty of the thirty-seven lists of assisted passengers to South Australia for 1855. They are all pretty terrific lists. As an aside, we heard from a direct descendant of one of the LISMOYNE families within in two days of me uploading it ! Amazing eh ! He was glad to provide additional details about that family. btw. to SA researchers . . we haven't had any OCTAVIA 1855 feedback yet, so please get the word out. If anyone is able to furnish corrections or additions (like maiden names) to any of the South Australia Lists, please write to Robert or myself. Please share this *new* for TheShipsList website email, with any other list to which you belong if you think it might be of interest or value to those list members (in other words, on-topic). Enjoy ! 1. [TSL] (TSL) Passenger lists for 1854 to Australia - Tudor, Merchantman, Prince Alfred, Blenheim, or Boomerang
    2. Lynne Barnard
    3. Hi Listers I am trying to locate a Catherine Hogan who was possibly a passenger on the Tudor, Merchantman, Prince Alfred, Blenheim, or Boomerang arriving In Victoria Australia in 1854. I found records in the Public Records Office of Victoria which said a Catherine Hogan arrived on each of the ships listed. I was hoping that someone might be able to help me to work out if any of these Catherine's is the correct one for my family. My only information is that Catherine Hogan was born in Tipperary Ireland in around 1834 and she married an Antonio Vienna (a seaman from Portugal) in 1856 in Geelong Victoria. I do not know how either of these ancestors arrived in Australia, I cannot find Antonio on any lists but as he is a seaman he might have been on a ships crew... Any help or advice on where to start would be VERY appreciated. Regards Lynne Victoria Australia

    3. Keith From the London Times shipping news. April 19, 1858 under Vessels Spoken With: "The William Edwards, from Liverpool for Rio Janeiro, March 12." Dec 29, 1868: "New York, Dec 16.--The William Edwards, of and for Liverpool from Omao, was stranded on Rustad on Nov. 21, and became a total loss; crew and part of cargo saved." That is all I can find but I also checked the NY Times and got this. Wreck of the British Bark William Edwards. The schooner Sunbeam, at this port from Ruatan Island, reports that the bark William Edwards, of Liverpool, England, from Omoa to Truxillo, with a cargo of mahogany and fustic, went ashore at Coxon's Hole, Ruatan, on the night of Friday Dec. 4, during a rain-squall. The vessel will be a total loss. The crew were all saved, and were at Ruatan Island when the Sunbeam left. Regards.. 1. Re: [TSL] Emigration by "cattle boat"?
    2. Sue Swiggum
    3. Hi Jude, 1844 seems a little early for the usual "cattle boat" stories. I imagine it was a sailing ship (versus steamship), so wonder if a cow was carried for milk? I'm not sure if many cattle "emigrated" in the sailing ship era. They certainly did in the later steamship days. A lot of ships carried both cattle and emigrants. For example, for 1884 Canada http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/Arrivals/cattle1884.html I think a lot of those 1884 cattle might have been breeding stock rather than *food* or *dairy* cattle. Canada quickly became a cattle exporting nation, so then the cattle were going in the other direction. Many "family oral histories" have ancestors arriving on Cattle Boats, often related as a hardship, but as so many passenger ships did also carry cattle and horses, I wonder if that rememberance falls into the same category as "I walked 5 miles to school, barefoot, in the snow ..." etc. <grin> Sue -- TheShipsList Website http://www.theshipslist.com/ At 09:39 AM 2008-07-08 -0400, JFW wrote: >Hello, TSL Listers: >I just found information that my emigrant ancestor, Nicholas FORD[E] came to >the US "on a cattle boat" around 1844. 2. JFW
    3. Hello, TSL Listers: I just found information that my emigrant ancestor, Nicholas FORD[E] came to the US "on a cattle boat" around 1844. The info says he came from "Kings [Offaly] and Dublin." I'm thinking that he may have come "from" Offaly but left Ireland from Dublin. I haven't been able yet to find his naturalization papers, though I know he was naturalized. My question is whether there is any place where I could find out more about "cattle boats" as a way for emigrants to work their passage. I'm thinking this might either be a "fourth class" booking--one below steerage or a "working" ticket--some sort of "water cowboy" who minds transported cattle????? Any thoughts would be appreciated. TIA Cheers, Jude

    2. Bess Flores
    3. Hallo, Jim, I've just received the June 2008 Pambu which has an item "Jim Burton an enthusiastic collector .... South Sea Islands:" I was going to suggest Pambu's indexes to their material on Santo, but expect you've combed them already. Have you tried the NSW State Archives? Their online "Archives in Brief" http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/archives_in_brief_1_365.asp lists and describes some likely sources, mostly printed but includes Ann Marie Warner's online "Mariners & ships in Australian waters" which lists the arrival of the Mambare in March, May & July 1902. You might like to contact her for advice on departures. You've probably checked also the Pacific Islands Monthly Cumulative Index 1930-1945 Paterson AB article "Sir J Burns & New Hebrides" in Pacific Islands Monthly May 1939 pp 39-51. I have reasonable sets of PIM , Islands Business & Pacific Islands Report for about 1990 to 1998. Are you likely to be interested in any from this period? Free eexcept for freight charges from South Australia? Best wishes, Bess Flores -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Jim Burton Sent: Monday, 30 June 2008 8:39 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [TSL] 'MAMBARE' out of Sydney to South Pacific Islands AB 'Banjo' Paterson travelled on the Burns Philp Steamer MAMBARE on a round trip to the South Pacific Islands departing Sydney late 26 May 1902. Also aboard were 12 Australian ex-Boer War Veterans travelling to take up Burns Philp land allotments on South Santo in the then New Hebrides. In researching the names of those 14 men of whom 11 stayed in Santo and 3 returned to Sydney, I'd like to obtain a copy of the MAMBARE's Passenger List for that particular voyage of the MAMBARE. Can anyone advise me where to look next? If there are any 'Banjo' Patterson enthusiasts out there, upon your request, I will send you a photocopy of his article about his trip as published in the SMH September 1902. Hopefully one good deed deserves a ready response.
