    3. Dear Listers, I hope someone can suggest a way forward for me. I'm trying to find out how James Percival Henderson, a !st Engineer, ( no. 9513) met his end in the 1870s, reputed to have drowned. Someone has found the following on the list of drowned sailor's assets: BT 153/17 James Henderson, drowned at sea 14/12/1876. Information received 23/4/1877. Ship J W Beard, Official number 64473.. There is a little more admin information, but no personal details and no age. Would the number refer to the vessel or the man? Is it possible to find out where the JWBeard was on 14/12/1876? Is it possible to find out what position this James Henderson held on board ship? Hopefully this may prove or disprove if he is my great uncle or some other hapless sailor. any suggestion that might finally cast light in James Percival Henderson's death would be welcome. Best wishes, Mary

    3. Margaret Many thanks for that I have a poor quality image of the MS list so the newspaper is very useful in correcting my Transcription and for reconstructing parts where the MS List is obscured, but there are still some discrepancies and I think some of the Passengers would have been upset one way or the other (especially the ones that changed sex or Marital status!) I have a number of questions about the Passenger list, I hope this is a suitable forum to get answers or guidance. Question 1 There is something slightly strange (to my mind) that it appears that apart from the Bishop's wife there are no Married ladies in Cabin (according to the MS list Steerage Passengers start at Thomas Petty), even to the point where Mr Henry Lumsdaine appears to be travelling with 3 sons and a Daughter, but no Wife. Does anyone have sufficient experience with Passenger lists from the period to say if would this be a normal state of affairs on an Emigrant ship? Is the Bishop shepherding young single ladies out to Sydney to increase the size of his flock? ;-) Question 2 Considering the recent Movie "Master and Commander" are these roles the same? The Flyer advertising the departure named one man as Commander, but on arrival a different name appears as Master on the Passenger list and again as Captain in the Newspaper "debt disclaimer"? Note it appears the departure was delayed, perhaps the Commander fell ill and had to be replaced? If anyone is looking for folks on this voyage I have prepared a page displaying the discrepancies at www.smee.me.uk/camden.htm Thanks again Pete -----Original Message----- From: MargM [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 02 August 2008 14:44 To: [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: Re: [TSL] The Camden UK to Australia 1836 - Info on ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pete Smee" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, August 02, 2008 10:53 PM Subject: [TSL] The Camden UK to Australia 1936 > Does any one have the passenger list (or know where it is > transcribed?) for > the Voyage of the Camden that arrived in Port Jackson on 2nd June > 1836? 3. Dear Listeners, I am trying to track down the Ship Peter Eul travelled on when he emigrated from Kierber, Koln, (Prussia). He arrived England in 1862 and has an address of 47 Union Street, Whitechapel, London, England in July of the same year. Peter Eul was born 26 Sep 1836 Prussia, Cologne, Germany. in 1871 his mother Catherine Eul is living with them at "Tower" public house, 19 Artillery Lane, Spitalfields, London, England. She was born in 1793 and aged 78. Any help in where to look for records would be most helpful many thanks David A Hawkin.

New for July 2008 is . . . o Fleets: o Ångfartyg A/B Bore / Bore Steamship Co. o Moss Hutchison Line, 1934-1979 o R.W. Leyland & Company (not to be confused with Leyland Line) Three more fleets. We have hundreds of historic and current Fleets but we have really only scratched the surface. The R.W. Leyland Fleet is actually a Sailing Ship Fleet, who later owned a few Steam Ships. Their main routes were from Liverpool to Australia and the West Coast of North and South America. o Passengers: o ship Oriental, from Southampton to Port Adelaide 1st November 1855 o ship Victoria Regia, from Plymouth to Port Adelaide 12th November 1855 Two more 1855 lists. The ORIENTAL has mostly English families, with the young single men and women being both Irish and English. I was able to confirm lots of maiden names and even confirm middle names for adults and children by using FreeBMD. Of those which I'm unsure, I have added a ? The VICTORIA REGIA has a mixture of English and Irish families. The single young men and women are mostly Irish. We will be glad to get any confirmation or extra details about the passengers. If anyone is able to furnish corrections or additions (like maiden names) to any of the South Australia Lists, please write to Robert or myself. Please share this *new* for TheShipsList website email, with any other list to which you belong if you think it might be of interest or value to those list members (in other words, on-topic). Enjoy ! 3. Lynne There is a long article in the London Times of Tuesday, June 22, 1852 about the Araminta. In part: ...The Araminta cleared out to-day (Saturday), having on board 320 adult emigrants, equal to 405 souls. As illustrative of the despatch with which they are shipped we may state that all the passengers entered the depot on Wednesday, and before noon on Friday they and their luggage were safe on board. The greater proportion were from the Isle of Skye.... As for the Lusitania... all from the London Times shipping news. Mar 14, 1887: The Orient Line steamer Lusitania will leave Tilbury on Thursday, calling at Plymouth on Saturday, for Naples, Port Said, Suez, Diego Garcia, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney. Mar 19, 1887: GRAVESEND, March 18.--The Orient Line steamer Lusitania left here to-day for Sydney. Mar 21, 1887: The Orient Line steamship Lusitania, arrived at Plymouth at 7.30 a.m. on Saturday and sailed again for Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney, via Naples, after embarking a number of passengers and five sacks of mails. The usual weekly Australian and New Zealand mails, via Brindisi, will be taken on board at Suez. Mar 24, 1887: The Orient Line steamer Lusitania, from London for Sydney, passed Sagres at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Mar 28, 1887: The Orient Line steamer...The same line steamer Lusitania, from London for Australia, arrived at Naples at 8a.m. on Saturday. Mar 29, 1887: The Orient Line steamer Lusitania, from London for australia, left Naples at 5p.m. on Saturday. Mar 31, 1887: The Orient Line steamer Lusitania, from London for Australia, arrived at Port Said at 7 a.m. yesterday. Apr 4, 1887: The Orient Line steamer Lusitania, from London for Australia, arrived at Suez at 5.30 p.m. on Friday, and left again at 9p.m. with the mails from London of March 25. Apr 28, 1887: The Orient Line steamer ...The same line steamer Lusitania, from London for Sydney, arrived at Adelaide yesterday, with the mails from London of March 25. 3. Hello Listners Again many thanks to those whom I have contacted off List who responded to my below inquiry. In my request I did not state what country my Robert Hamilton came to, it was Australia. I am still trying to find a ship and passenger list for him. My next question to the List is this, would he have had to come down to England from Scotland to board a ship bound for Australia? Many thanks John I wrote: Having received a death certificate for Robert Hamilton I have successfully found his date of birth as being 30 July 1833 Colvend Roughforth Scotland. His certificate states that he has been in the colony for 50 years and so he must have arrived from Scotland c 1864. My question is how do I go about finding him on a passenger list and what ship; he may have come with siblings.
