Dear All I'd be very grateful of your help in solving a family mystery. We have a diary of the above voyage but would like to find out who wrote it. Our mystery author seems to have been a painter on the above voyage which left Liverpool on Dec 17th 1884 - he lists the names of the Captain and crew but there didn't seem to be many passengers as it seemed to be carrying cargo, but did pick up 2 or 3 consul passengers en route back to Liverpool. The Crew are listed in the diary as being: Captain: Capt. Hamblin of Wavertree 1st Officer: Mr S V Richardson of Walton 2nd Officer: Mr Sullivan 3rd Officer: Mr Holtum Steward: Mr G F Kent Chief Eng: Mr Keir 2nd Eng: Mr Stewart 3rd Eng: Mr Boyd He must have been employed as a Painter as he mentions painting inside cabins, or skylights or wires several times. Can anyone shed light on where I could possibly find his name, please? Looking forward to replies in grateful anticipation! Hi Ted and John Many thanks that just about fills in my list of ship's photos for our seaman during his years with Union SS of NZ (1901 to 1907) This last ship looks a bit of a comedown after the Karitane and Moana which he was on a month or so earlier... Maybe because he grounded the Karitane.... Can anyone help find ships crew lists for the Union SS Co of NZ? We see Alexander Forbes HIRD in the NSW index of unassisted passengers and once or twice as "Capt" but this is via a colleague from the Ancestry Au site ... Are there images of those crew lists available? I have ON's for most his ships but no crew lists for the relevant dates are on http://www.mun.ca/mha/. Any suggestions welcome Regards Robin -- Robin and Margaret McEwen-King Lanark Scotland
Hello All Please could someone help me on this one; Gloucestor Castle - Union Castle Line London to Lourenco Marques Date of Departure 7th June 1934 There is a passenger E Whiting (I am looking for an Edgar Whiting born 15 January 1916 in Upton, Worcestorshire) Last address 55 Seven Sisters Rd - looks like M7 Occupation Clerk Aged 18 Years - (age fits with my Edgar) If he was going to Capricorn which in my reckoning is inland which port which he actually disembark at and would there be any records of his leaving the ship and entering South Africa. I have searched for this man high and low, can't even find a death in SA. I do have the image if anyone would like to see it. Many thanks Shani
Hi Mary, >From memory (not always reliable, in my case !), a death could not be registered if there was no body. So a mariner lost at sea would not appear on the death registers. The "widow" was entitled to re-marry if there was no sign of her spouse after a period of 7 years. At least, I believe that was the position in English law. I'm looking for - and not finding - information on several early sailing ships that brought English immigrants to New York and Philadelphia from Liverpool. The Manhattan arrived on one voyage in New York on 21 May 1821 with my 3rd great-grandparents Benjamin and Dorothy Ripton/Repton from Derbyshire on board. Dorothy's sister and her husband, Elizabeth and William Burton arrived from Derbyshire in Philadelphia on 3 Jun 1823. In looking through the ships listed on the ShipsList website, I can't find any of this early vintage - there's a Manhattan, for example, but it was built about 1866. Does anyone know of any online source for these early sailing ships? Thanks. Joanne Gaudio

Google just announced an initiative to make more old newspapers accessible and searchable online by partnering with newspaper publishers to digitize millions of pages of news archives. One of the papers they have partnered with is the Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph, oldest newspaper in North America publishing for more than 244 years. ProQuest & Heritage are also named as partners. In the time period in question, ships' lists contain only crude information on the origins of the passengers. You'll have to rely on other (American) sources for that information-- family legend, obituaries, church records, vital records, naturalization records, newspaper articles, local history, etc. Although none of those records are guaranteed to contain the information you seek, the possibility is there for each of them. If a thorough search of the records doesn't pan out, it's important to expand your efforts to your ancestors' social group. Many immigrants joined other family members or neighbors from their hometowns in this country. Find out where others in their neighborhood came from. Examine records for siblings of your ancestors. Leave no stone unturned. Good luck! Kathy
Hello, Can anyone help me or offer suggestions as to where I might locate information, any information? My family immigrated 19 May 1845, ship "Iowa", and 20 May 1847, ship "Francis Depau". Both were said to have come from Switzerland, via Havre, France, to port of New York. Various records indicate/alternate between Switzerland and Germany as location of births. I have found very little regarding either ship. Is there any way of determining where they were born, what village, town or area? How can I learn of the family left behind to gain family connection? The family surnames were: ZIMMERMAN(n) and VOGT (Foght, Fought, Vaught, Voght, Voight, Volk, Vought). Thank you. Hi Denise, You don't mention whether you have already done a "Google" search for that ship. A quick look and I find this page: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~GENHOME/imm10b.htm And several web sites mention a ship, "Charming Betsy," which took on that name around 1800. (Notice that it is also called Charming Betsey.) Betty (near Lowell, MA) Remember to check the archives of all the Lists and Boards for your surnames and place-names.
