    1. [TSL] UK Incoming Ships Passenger Lists, 1878-1960
    2. Sally Haden
    3. Hi folks, A couple of days ago I replied (I thought to the list) on the subject as above, and have just discovered it went instead to a lister, off list. So here it is for the list... It was in response to the information given by [email protected], a few days ago, in reference to the Incoming UK Ships Passenger lists and the info on http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/ >> I was most interested to explore this possibility, because I am >> trying to trace the return to England from Japan a man named James >> SPEED in about 1885, or somewhere between 1883 up to possibly >> about 1887. I have no idea of the name of the ship or its port of >> destination, I only know his name and age and the certain fact of >> his return. >> >> After finding 'him' on a free search, I upgraded my subscription >> to Ancestry, only to find it wasn't him. I don't mind the expense >> of my upgrade actually, because it will mean I can look for >> various 'global' events now. But I have a question please. >> >> Do these lists include all passengers who came into the UK during >> the period 1878-1960? I know that James Speed definitely came >> back into the UK some time after 1883, but he may have been on a >> cargo ship. I know that many passengers travelled from UK to the >> Far East in cargo ships in Victorian times, when they would number >> a dozen or less. In fact that was possibly normal for some >> decades? Are the lists now available as "UK incoming ships >> passenger lists, 1878-1960" limited to passenger ships? > > For the record, since trying to post this I have found out that Ancestry do say that the earlier records are a bit thin on the ground.... > >> The passenger lists date from 1878 to 1888 and 1890 to 1960. >> However, many of the pre-1890 lists were irregularly destroyed by >> the Board of Trade in 1900. Therefore, there are not many lists >> included in this database that date from these earlier years. >> Should I therefore give up? I think it is likely that SPEED was one of a handful of passengers on a cargo ship, and is most unlikely to have been crew because he was a glassworks manager working for the Japanese government. Pete on this list has suggested he may have changed ships somewhere, which would account for his not showing up as coming from Japan, but as I recall my search, there were no other SPEED who were possible. Many thanks for any thoughts. Sally in Yorkshire, UK

    1. [TSL] Ship - HESTIA. Drowning 1885
    2. Christine Miller
    3. Hello Listers, In 'Deaths at sea', I have found an entry that really interests me - Folio 2730 (Mrs) - ORR. Drowned 29.3.85 "Hestia" 72406. I've been unable to find a "Hestia" that would coincide with this date. I would like to know where the ship was heading, if the ship went down - or if poor Mrs Orr was the only one to meet her death. Would it be possible to obtain a death certificate? It's quite possible that she was my G G Grandmother. I would appreciate some help with this as it's the first Death at sea I've come across & I've no idea how to proceed! Best wishes, Christine

    3. Hi Christine, I probably shouldn't even be answering this one (Ted will likely tell me <grin>), but I'm assuming that 72406 was the Official Number of the vessel. I went to Mariners website to look for it, but that number was missing http://www.mariners-l.co.uk/IBON-INDEX.html 72405 REGARD 1876 Greenock 130 72407 DIANA 1876 Greenock 27 The numbers on either side indicate a Greenock Registry for rather small ships ... would that fit? The only HESTIA on TheShipList website even close, was the Donaldson Line one which wrecked on Manan Island, Bay of Fundy, in 1909 with the loss of 35 lives. http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/donaldson.html Sue -- TheShipsList Website http://www.theshipslist.com/ At 01:12 PM 2008-10-27 +0000, Christine Miller wrote: >Hello Listers, > >In 'Deaths at sea', I have found an entry that really interests me - > >Folio 2730 (Mrs) - ORR. 3. Hello June, I'm afraid you are out of luck for an 18th or 19th century passenger record between Ireland and England or Scotland. England and Ireland were one country and there were no restrictions on travel so no passenger lists were archived. Read Debbie Beavis' article about British Records http://www.theshipslist.com/Research/ukrecords.html See under the heading of "Lists Not Available:" for full details. 1. [TSL] Ship "Queen"
    2. Bob
    3. Hello, I am looking for any information for a ship and it's passengers sailing from Liverpool, England arriving at the port of New Orleans Dec, 25 1851. The few pieces of information I have show the ships name as "Queen" with it's master being someone known as McCartney. It had a passenger list of approx 435, four of which died during the voyage. I have ran across a ship named "Queen" in my searches showing it was built in 1865 so doubtfully this is the correct one. This is the ship my G,G,G, grandparents boarded when they emigrated from Ireland to the United States So any information or guidance is greatly appreciated. Thanks Bob

    3. ss QUEENSBURY (blt 1953) was owned by Alexander Shipping Ltd and operated from 1953 – 1971 by Capper, Alexander Ltd. At some stage Houlder's took control of Alexander's, and then Furness, Withy took control of Houlder's. Pictures of QUEENSBURY should be in the history of Furness withy by David Burrell, pub by World Ship Society, 1992. A record of her voyages will be obtainable from her "Voyage Record Card" held in the Lloyd's Collection at the Guildhall Library, in London. 3. Just a word of warning, don't trust the transcriptions! For example According to the transcription Delcie Winks arrived in London from Aden on the 19th Sep 1958 on the "Kenya Castle" Checking the image shows she actually arrived at Liverpool from Montreal on the 8th Sep 1958 on the "Empress of England" At least they got her name right :-) It looks as if where papers are stapled together, the Transcribers have used the Top sheet for the index regardless of changes in Dates, Ports or Ships Pete

    3. Hi: No guarantees, but this sounds like one of the Canadian Pacific Steamships (waterborne Canadian Pacific Railway) that sailed regularly between Vancouver, BC, Victoria, BC, and Seattle, Washington. The Kathleen, Marguerite, and Patricia were sister ships designed to carry vehicles and passengers on the "Triangle Route" about the Gulf of Georgia and Puget Sound. The had staterooms because, although the trips were not long, they frequently were scheduled for overnight to arrive at the destination the following morning. They were still in service in the late '40s when I had the pleasure of traveling between Vancouver and Victoria on the Patricia with my parents. They were superseded by more plebeian ferries as the number of vehicles requiring transport grew.
