I know TheShipsList website is big, but if you check the "Arrivals" page, you will see the Australia section (I've added the australia anchor in this URL to make it easier) http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/Arrivals/index.htm#australia In the list you'll see the page you cite, with the same URL Emigant Ships of 1837-39 http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/au1838.htm You can use "Find on this page" in your browser and search on either Bowler or Aliquis to find the two entries. The first refers to the December 7th 1838 sailing of ALIQUIS with 296 persons. With convict transports there was the John 1 ( 1) meaning its first voyage in 1827 . Then comes John 1 (2) ,2nd voyage of same ship . Pretty sure John 4 would be a different ship Maybe some info in http://www.convictcentral.com/ The National Library has started digitising old newspapers. They have the Sydney Gazette 1803- 1844 on line http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home Aus-convicts would probably be a better mailing list for convict ship info Have you checked http://users,bigpond.net.au/convicts ? 1. [TSL] Crew's List SS George Washington
    2. In a message dated 11/6/2008 3:13:51 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Crew's List SS George Washington ([email protected]) landed in New York on the SS George Washington on the 2 Sept 1913. In looking, by the ship's name, on the Ellis Island site, I went through the entire passenger list and was unable to find my person. Family lore stated that he may have worked his way to America. Can anyone tell me where I could find the list of the crew for this ship??? A few thoughts. First I agree with the response already posted that I always am a little skeptical on the dates provided by people on their arrivals. A lot of them were not accurate. Second might be to get a bit imaginative when you look for the name on the list. Remember spelling was not very accurate -- or as accurate as we think of it today. Also the person might have been using an "old county" name or nickname on the passenger list and "Americanized" the name years later in the USA. As for the crew lists I thought a lot of them were scanned in on the Ellis Island site as part of the passenger lists. I have not looked at 1913 specifically but I have seen other years where the crew list is part of the one on line. By reading the header on the scanned pages you can see citizens versus non-citizens versus crew. Generally I thought crew was towards the end of the list. Otherwise you might check with the National Archives which has the original microfilms and ask them if crew lists exist. The George Washington in 1913 was run by a German firm called North German Lloyd out of Bremen. The firm still exists but I do not believe they have any records. Their is an immigration museum in Bremen but I do not think they have lists either. Hope that helps. 3. Hi Patti, There are a number of very talented folks on this list who are incredibly imaginative when it comes to locating people. I know that the first thing that any of them would ask you is, "What is your ancestor's name and do you have a date of birth?" They will ask these things because the seemingly infallible records, including Naturalization Petitions, sometimes contain erroneous information. My Grandfather, for example, gave different dates of birth on at least three documents that I have found, and two different dates for the day he arrived here. Best of luck! 3. Hi Jim, Further to Ron's post, Blue Star Line's KINGSWOOD was a small meat carrier, used on the local River Plate trade and would have been unlikely to have made a round the world voyage. This was probably Constantine's tramp steamer KINGSWOOD. Built 1914 by J. Readhead & Co, South Shields as the ONWEN for W & C. T. Jones, Cardiff, she was sold to Woolston SS Co, Cardiff in 1918 and in 1920 was sold to Rumney SS Co, Cardiff and renamed RUMNEY. 1924 purchased by J. Constantine SS Line and renamed KINGSWOOD. 1928 sold to Finland renamed HOGLAND. 1942 Torpedoed and sunk by French submarine RUBIS on voyage Norway to a German Baltic port with iron ore. Appleyard] regards Ted ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ron Mapplebeck" <[email protected]> To: "Jim Murphy" <[email protected]> Cc: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, October 31, 2008 8:58 PM Subject: Re: [TSL] S.S.
