    3. Thanks Kim, that was the way I took it. Poor Patricia had been on the list since last March, but I didn't want to take any chances. If she subs again, I will explain to her . . although, the messages were sent last night so I didn't seen them until this morning, so she would have seen them on list and John's comment. Reunion.com was something I had always just ignored. I'd never looked into what it was <sigh> My husband's 85+ year old aunt sends me "funnies" which are great, but those "forward" things too, which I NEVER forward either. ;-} Sue -- At 11:05 AM 2008-11-19 -0500, Kim Gawlak wrote: >Hi Sue, >Just FYI, I have seen this happen once before on another list I subscribe >to -- Reunion.com did the same thing... >It's some sort of spam-program.... 3. John and list, I don't know what on earth Patricia was thinking. The only thing I can think is that she maybe used her personal address book with the list address included. I have unsubscribed Patricia from this list. The list address is only an address which people can send mail TO, not FROM, so as no-one can confirm _from_ this address to accept the "invitation," there should be no cause for concern. 3. I've been notified that the server hosting TheShipsList _website_ (not this email discussion list), will be moving its physical location on Thursday the 20th November. The move will take 3-4 hours and the reboot as long as one hour, so it it will be a possible downtime of as many as 5 hours <she says optimistically>. I can't be more specific as to the GMT time (or equivalent), but it will be moving from Los Angeles datacenter to the San Diego datacenter, probably in daylight hours. If you try to visit during down-time you will probably receive a 401 error, but it is only temporary, as I've noted. Sue -- TheShipsList Website http://www.theshipslist.com/

    1. [TSL] Brig "Stephen Watson" 1838-1863
    2. Mike YEGWART
    3. Hi Folks, In 1863 newspaper reports say the Alexander WATERS was the owner of a brig, *Stephen Watson* built in The Wear in1838 at 219 tons. It ran aground at Gunfleet Sand on December 13th 1863 taking coal from Sunderland to London. All hands survived. A different newspaper quotes the owners as Messrs. A Watson and S. Grieves of Sunderland. According to the census and his son-in-law's obituary Alexander WATERS born in 1799 was also a Master mariner. I am looking for any further information on the brig and, if possible, an image of a coaling brig of that period. Regards Mike Yegwart

    3. *new* for TheShipsList website http://www.theshipslist.com/ All the new and updated files and databases have been placed on their own page(s) Find them on the front page in between the big arrows --------------> <--------------- At the bottom of each of these pages I have placed links named " previous month " and " next month " so you are able to navigate back and forth between the monthly *new & updated* pages, as I only keep three months of *new* page links on the Home page. New for November 2008 is . . . o Fleets: o King Line / Philipps & Company / Philipps, Philipps & Company Ltd 1899-1959 This Fleet was a cargo ship line. o Arrivals: o Ships to Quebec 1830 (completed ...4 pages) Just a reminder that the 1830 Quebec papers are completed. o Passengers: o SOUTH AUSTRALIA o ship Gomelza, from Southampton to Port Adelaide 10th June 1856 o ship Hooghly, from Plymouth to Port Adelaide 25th July 1856 o ship Eliza, from Southampton to Port Adelaide 20th August 1856 Three more ships with assisted passengers to South Australia for 1856. They are all great lists with lots of families but fewer single women. The British Parliamentary Papers for 1855 eg. published complaints about too many young women not able to find employment, which probably accounts for fewer of them being selected for the 1856 ships. The list compilers sometimes use ditto marks ( " or do. ) to indicate where people had resided. Robert and I have found that this was a careless practise, because some were definitely not from that place. For those, I have included their proper residence circa. 1851, in the "Remarks" column, for others just question marks, like the elusive Whiting family on the HOOGHLY and the Hosking family on the ship I'm now working on, so I'll repeat this message next time .... if you recognise any families / people, who are wrongly recorded, please let Robert or I know. ... also, If anyone is able to furnish corrections or additions (like maiden names) to any of the South Australia Lists, please write to Robert or myself. Also if you know that any family or individual did leave for Victoria after arrival at South Australia then we'd like to know that too, so it can be added as a note to the list. o Passengers: o QUEBEC o New Swiftsure - 1st trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 20th July 1830 o New Swiftsure - 2nd trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 27th July 1830 o New Swiftsure - 3rd trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 5th August 1830 o New Swiftsure - 4th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 9th August 1830 — mostly Scots, big families, lots of children o New Swiftsure - 5th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 22nd August 1830 o New Swiftsure - 6th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 1st September 1830 o New Swiftsure - 7th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 4th September 1830 o New Swiftsure - 8th trip up, ...no passengers o New Swiftsure - 9th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 18th September 1830 o New Swiftsure - 10th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 26th September 1830 — notation "Settlers in Distress." o New Swiftsure - 11th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 2nd October 1830 o New Swiftsure - 12th trip up, Three Rivers to Montreal, 10th October 1830 o New Swiftsure - 13th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 17th October 1830 o New Swiftsure - 14th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 24th October 1830 o New Swiftsure - 15th trip up, Quebec to Montreal, 4th November 1830 These are the only 1830 steamboat lists we have up (to go with thw 1830 newspapers), but more are coming very soon. This was the last season for the NEW SWIFTSURE, as at the end of the season she was sold to Sir John Caldwell and was going to have her engines taken out, and placed in the sawmills at Becancour. The 9th August trip is great with obvious Scottish families, and some children being referred to as laddies and lasses (I so wish they had included the names). I think they probably arrived at Quebec in the brig Stirling Castle from Greenock. Another interesting group were on the September 26th trip. That list had the notation "Settlers in Distress." They were allowed to travel free, or for a reduced fare. I'm guessing they had arrived on the brig Atlantic, from Belfast. Please share this *new* for TheShipsList website email, with any other list to which you belong if you think it might be of interest or value to those list members (in other words, on-topic). Enjoy ! 1. [TSL] Joseph ASHTON, England>US before 1682
    2. Does anyone know of any ship manifests BEFORE Penn's arrival in 1682 that would have Joseph ASHTON from England on it? I have searched those I've found online, but no luck so far, and there's not that many. I know he was in Philadelphia before 1682, but I don't know how long, nor do I know if he actually came to Philly directly from England. Perhaps he came via New England several years earlier, or some alternative route. Joseph died in 1708, naming 2 children who are believed to have been b in Philly ca 1682/84. I have not been able to confirm that. Most family trees suggest Joseph was b 1654 in Lancashire, Englad, which would suggest Liverpool as the departure port; I have not been able to confirm that. Joseph was married to Jane (surname unknown), but I don't know whether they married before or after he arrived in the US. Any help greatly appreciated. Sharon **************Get the Moviefone Toolbar. 3. No they don't Sue but the point was if Frank worked out which ship they came on from the indexes then he would be able to check the passenger list which would. Much more definitive than guessing the most likely which still doesn't help anyway as passenger lists are much easier to find this end than the UK end. Regards Lyn -----Original Message----- From: Sue Swiggum [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, 15 November 2008 7:57 AM To: Lyn; [email protected] Cc: Frank Morgan Subject: Re: [TSL] UK Emigration departure ports to Melbourne Aust. 1850 Hi Lyn (copy Frank) I don't think those databases do indicate the name of the departure port, just B for a British port and F for a foreign port (ie. any place other than a British port). Frank, I had been thinking about your query and thought that maybe Liverpool would have been most likely from Leeds. England had pretty well established rail by that time, so that would have opened up other opportunities, so I can't be sure. You should begin with the databases Lyn mentioned to learn which year, which month of arrival and the name of the ship. There are assisted (from 1839) and unassisted (from 1852) links ... you can quickly find the direct links here ... just scroll down to Australia http://www.theshipslist.com/Research/Resource.htm#pax Armed with that information about the ship name and month / year of arrival, you can access the Sydney Shipping Gazette online ... http://www.nla.gov.au/ferg/issn/14403897.html ... You will get the hang of it, but Melbourne arrival information was usually published in the SSG about 2-3 weeks later. You will almost 100% likely, learn the port of departure (as well as learning the day of arrival), usually Captain name, "cabin passengers" names and numbers of emigrants. Sometimes you'll find a chatty piece about the voyage and maybe the cargo the vessel carried ... those aren't necessarily on the same page. The images are .pdf so you'll need an Adobe Reader (free download if you don' t have it) Sue -- TheShipsList Website http://www.theshipslist.com/ At 07:30 AM 2008-11-15 +1000, Lyn wrote: >Hi Frank > >It might be easier to find them arriving in Australia - the passenger >list will have the port of departure. Hi Darrell, That got me thinking, so I checked the website and found this "More Information" webpage http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/indexes_to_assisted_immigrants_366.asp Abbreviations in the search results bv: born on voyage, in quarantine etc. b&dv: born and died on voyage, in quarantine etc. cob: child(ren) on board (listed separately) dv: died on voyage, in quarantine etc. inft: infant pob: parent(s) on board (listed separately) sf: stepfather tw: travelling with I had checked your Pressland and see that abbreviation for Alfred, who was 15. Alfred was considered an adult, therefore would have been listed as a "single man" rather than with the family and the younger children. Children 14 and above were considered adults. I notice though that the British Parliamentary pages for arrivals from 1856 on ... http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/australia/1856-1857.htm ...state "N.B.— From January 1st 1856, all persons above the age of 12 years are reckoned as adults." 3. Hi Lyn (copy Frank) I don't think those databases do indicate the name of the departure port, just B for a British port and F for a foreign port (ie. any place other than a British port). The images are .pdf so you'll need an Adobe Reader (free download if you don' t have it) Sue -- TheShipsList Website http://www.theshipslist.com/ At 07:30 AM 2008-11-15 +1000, Lyn wrote: >Hi Frank > >It might be easier to find them arriving in Australia - the passenger list >will have the port of departure. 1. [TSL] *new* Immigrants to Canada pre-1865

    3. Hi listers, The Library & Archives, Canada (LAC), have just uploaded a brand new online database for Immigrants to Canada for the period prior to the formal archiving of passenger lists, which was in 1865. This was initially a card index referred to as the "Miscellaneous Immigration Index." There is a very long list of the sources included and you can read those by clicking on the "Search Help" page. That page also gives a full description of the database. There have been several *new* databases recently added on the LAC website, so you can find them all listed here http://www.theshipslist.com/Research/Resource.htm#pax Enjoy !
