    3. Greetings, A week you say? Seems reasonable, not desireable perhaps but any 'unfavourable winds' would be a situation where the amount of sail would be gradually/rapidly reduced, anchored, if a safe place was available. Suppose that a sudden 'blow' tore the sails from the yards. Spare sails would have to be got from the storage and mounted, assuming that the yards and masts and its own rigging were sound. Essentially all repairs to the sails and rigging had to be performed on board, depending on the size of the vessel, crew size may be very small around 2 to 30 men, again assuming that the crew are hale and hearty and not nursing broken bones or torn muscles.......... finger nails ripped off was common! 1. [TSL] Possible wreck of the John Fielden
    2. Joanne Mitchell
    3. Hi List, Courtesy of the British Library and Gale site (thanks to Eliz for that link), I have managed to track down more of the movements of the JOHN FIELDEN which carried my CUSACK ancestors to Moreton Bay (Brisbane, QLD) in 1853. I now know that between 1857 and early 1860 the JOHN FIELDEN carried cargo between England and the West Indies and on another occasion, Quebec under the command of a Captain Broadley (aka Bradley). On 13th January 1860 she departed her home port of Liverpool headed for Rio Janeiro. On 1st February, small pieces of wreck and a life buoy with the name JOHN FIELDEN were found on the beach at Voryd near Rhyl on the north east coast of Wales. Then finally, on 9th August, 1860 it was noted in the English papers that the JOHN FIELDEN had not arrived at her destination and had not been seen since leaving Liverpool. >From this it seems possible that the JOHN FIELDEN was wrecked only a short time after leaving port. At this stage I haven't been able to find further newspaper reports, so I am wondering if anyone has any further ideas for determining what might have become of the JOHN FIELDEN. With thanks, Jo Mitchell Geelong, Australia

    3. Thank you to all those who have so kindly helped with search on the vessel Emily Taylor. It seems we might be in the process of rewriting Australian history. The man I am researching, John Peter Armstrong, arrived in Western Australia in 1830 (March) aboard what is recorded in Australian history books as the EMILY TAYLOR. (Armstrong was the 2nd officer, and gunner, aboard the vessel). However, from the reports we have been able to locate to date, it appears the EMILY TAYLOR is actually the EMILY, and her masters name was TAYLOR. We have two news reports from the Hull papers to confirm the Emily arrived at Swan River in March 1830, and that she was driven ashore not long after at Fremantle, and sold off in June of 1830. Does anyone have information on a vessel called the EMILY, which would have possibly left England about 1829/very early 1830, whose master was a Mr Taylor. The vessel would have been about 270 - 300 tons with thanks Jenny

Brig, 207 tons. Aground in Cockburn Sound, WA, in a gale, 21 May 1830. Refloated. [LW],[ASW1 - 300 tons, ashore last week of May or early June] last known to be in India. I am truly desperate to track down the vessel's history, and the crew list. My man onboard was John Peter Armstrong, and he was mate with thanks Jenny F

    3. Hi Denise, If you re-read the description and history of the vessel ... VIRGINIAN / DROTTNINGHOLM / BRASIL / HOMELAND 1905 http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/descriptions/ShipsV.html ... you'll see "...On 1/6/1951 she commenced her first voyage from New York to Hamburg, on 16/6/1951 commenced Hamburg - Southampton - Cherbourg - Halifax - New York service and on 1/3/1952 started her last sailing on this route. On 14/3/1952 she commenced a New York - Mediterranean service and on 29/3/1952 commenced sailing between Naples - Genoa - Halifax - New York. She commenced her final voyage on 21/10/1954 when she left Genoa for Naples, Halifax, New York, Naples and Genoa, and in Feb.1955 she was scrapped at Trieste. " Her last sailing from Hamburg via Southampton commenced on the 1st March 1952 You haven't mentioned whether you are looking for a Halifax or New York arrival. The New York arrival lists are available through Ancestry.com but the Halifax arrival extract of passenger landing at that port would only be available through "Access to Information" request (Post -1935) http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-908.007-e.html If your passenger embarked at Southampton, you can confirm which year, to which port by accessing the FindmyPast website http://www.findmypast.com/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action?redef=0 The database is free to search, but it costs to access the original "full" record. 3. Marie, I know you mean well, but it is 100% impossible to receive a virus through RootsWeb email discussion lists. If you google "Sanesecurity.Malware.9156.UNOFFICIAL" it returns 5 pages only out of the billions of possible returns. I think your ISP was aware that Reunion.com was a "Phishing" website .... something I've only learned about Reunion in the last couple of days. I do however know a lot about RootsWeb email discussion lists and their security, and have run this list for ten years. ;-} There was absolutely NO virus attached, rather, your ISP was probably reacting to the "string" in the URL in the email, so please don't be concerned. It seems from what other listers have written, personally and to the list, the other Patricia would not have done this intentionally. 3. Hi Sue and List, My concern is only that everyone should be aware of how some of these social networking sites work. What Patricia did when she registered with Reunion was to give, in addtion to her email address, her password to access her email account. Reunion's software then copied the email addresses in her address book and sent out the email received by the list to them all. If asked for your password to your email account give a false one. Your registration will continue but they will not be able to access your address book. If anyone has already given away their password they should be able to prevent any future access merely by changing it. 3. In addition to being a subscriber to TSL, I'm also an active List Admin and I've see far too many of these on quite a few lists. Just FYI, the subscriber in question need only to sign up with Reunion typically as a social service to contact some friends such as Facebook, YouTube, etc. The difference with Reunion is that in order to join, you must give them access to your computer and address book so they can send out these messages to EVERYONE in it, without regard to whether it is an individual, a mailing list, a business, or whatever. Since they send it FROM YOUR COMPUTER AND ACCOUNT, that means it gets posted to the lists that person subscribes to. "If it looks like a spammer, and it walks like a spammer, and it acts like a spammer, then it must BE a spammer." When I get them on my lists, I immediately REMOVE that subscriber from the list and put them on the ban list, not as punishment but that is the only way of cutting off the access Reunion now has to mail to the list. However, I also write to the subscriber and explain why I did it, and invite them to either resubscribe now using a different account or to wait awhile before resubscribing in the future. Folks subscribe to Reunion without knowing any of this, because they conveniently do not explain that they are going to mass mail to all the lists you subscribe to as if you yourself are doing it, so they have no idea what is happening until it is too late. I wish there was a better way of stopping them from doing it, but that is all we can do as List Admins. :-( Not a great choice, but it does work. David E.
