Hello! Theobald is the name of a French saint, French pronunciation Thiebaut. He lived from 1017 to 1066. He was born in Champagne. Then he changed to the territory of the Holy Empire of German Nation, including Luxembourg, Alsace, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. First he was an anchorite in Luxembourg. On the way to Rome as pilgrim he stayed as bishop in Italy. He is called to be a saint at the end of his live. In the territory of Luxembourg, Saar Bassin Territory (mainly in Fraulautern - part of Saarlouis), Palatine (especially Landau) and Alsace (cathedral of Thann with a stolen ring and finger from the corpse in Vizenca) St. Theobald was idolized long time. Persons were given the first name Theobald and Thiebaud in France. There have been a lot of monarchs having that name. Last names has not been usual at these early time in Europe. Later in order to distinguish a man called X from another called X, the father's first name has been added, e.g. X of Theobald, and later only X Theobald. This will be the reason for multiple branches of Theobald existing in Germany. Unfortunely most documents in churches were burnt in the 17. century during the religious wars of 30 years. Thus my family chronic starts at this time. I am part of the Fraulautern clan of Theobald. One more information: At the time of emigration to USA in the 19th century Palatine was a part of Bavaria. What I have done is extracted all the Theobald's I have on data base that have said they come from Germany. I have shown both those in USA and also England. This information is attached. The English section comes first. None of the USA items have been double checked but all the English have been gathered from the census returns etc if you see 51c and 81c etc they refer to 1851 census and 1881 censes. If you can give me more information on any of these I would be very grateful and if there are any questions please come back to me. The reason for the data base is I run the World one name on Theobald for the Guild of One Names which was started some 30 plus years ago. I have been collecting references to the name for the past 42 years.
