    3. Greetings to all........ As a very new subscriber to this group I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has any knowledge of the early career of Marie Kendall who was at the peak of her UK music hall career at the end of the 19th/beginning 20th centuries. I know a fair bit about her from 1900 on but I would like to know about her very earliest stage appearances and (if possible) her family background. Many Thanks John Stevens

    3. Hi John, I don't know if anyone else has replied to your request on Marie Kendall, I have no knowledge of her, but I am researching the name of Kendall in the theatre, My G.G. Grandmother was a Frances Mary Kendall and her father was a George Kendall, who was an actor, I do know that he had a son by the name of John Gillibrand Kendall, but haven't been able to find out much information on this family apart from Frances Mary Kendall, she died in 1902 in Neath in Wales. I was wondering if your Marie could have been connected to my Kendalls. Kind regards Rita Robinson kindal01@telkomsa.net Durban, South Africa. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Stevens" <anax@breathemail.net> To: <THEATRE-UK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 11, 2003 6:55 PM Subject: [THEATRE-UK] Marie Kendall > Greetings to all........ > > As a very new subscriber to this group I would be very interested > to hear from anyone who has any knowledge of the early career of > Marie Kendall who was at the peak of her UK music hall career at the > end of the 19th/beginning 20th centuries. > > I know a fair bit about her from 1900 on but I would like to know > about her very earliest stage appearances and (if possible) her family > background. > > Many Thanks > > John Stevens > > > >

    3. Hi Rita and John My 1930 Who's Who has entries for three Kendalls, though none seem to be the ones you are looking for: there's Dame Madge (Margaret) Kendall (huge entry for her), Henry Kendall, and John Kendall, who is listed as a dramatic author. Anyway, let me know if you'd like any of these entries. -- Neal ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robinson" <kindal01@telkomsa.net> To: <THEATRE-UK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 14, 2003 5:35 AM Subject: Re: [THEATRE-UK] Marie Kendall > Hi John, > I don't know if anyone else has replied to your request on Marie Kendall, I > have no knowledge of her, but I am researching the name of Kendall in the > theatre, My G.G. 3. Hi Rita and others who kindly replied on- and off-group. I actually know quite a lot about Marie after she became famous and it is the early period of her life that seems to be unrecorded in any source that I have come across so far. She made her first stage appearance at the age of 5 (1878) in London as "Baby Chester" and this epithet is one of a number of mysteries I am trying to solve. My motive by the way is family history - Marie and I have a common ancestor. Kendall was actually a stage name (Marie was born Marie Holyome)but her descendants kept the name going and it became the family's "official" name. The late Kay Kendall (movie star and wife of Rex Harrison) was Marie's granddaughter and my nth cousin. As far as I have ascertained so far, the only Kendalls descended from Marie who went into 'showbiz' are: Richard & Harry - early years of 20th century - brothers of Marie. On stage performers and management. Terry & Pat - son and daughter of Marie. Song and dance team in 1920's and 30's. Quite famous and did a Royal Command Performance in London Kay - daughter of Terry Kim - Kay's sister - still alive in USA Cavan - male movie star of some moderate repute. The above may be of interest to someone.
