Hi listers Today I received a birth certificate for my Aunt. It said that her father, my grandfather, ROBERT JOHN GEORGE SMITH, was a 'Porter at Costumiers', when she was born in 1913. He was at the time, 32 years old, born 1881, and was living at 168 Clapham Road, Stockwell. In the 1891 census his family were living at 22 Cumberland Market, Pancras. Now the crunch - how would I find out which Costumiers he would have been working at? I presume it would have been somewhere in the theatre district of the Westend, easily accessible from Pancras and Stockwell. I am also trying to trace his wife's, my grandmother's, birth. She was ALICE MAUDE BREWER and was said to have been born 24 Sept 1896 London I have not found her birth registration or her whereabouts in the 1901 census. I am wondering if she was from a theatrical background - with the grandfather's connection to theatreland, maybe they met through her parents coming to get costumes. Any ideas would be very welcome.
