Hi, I am a new subscriber & am trying to find any information - especially Christian name - of: Mr Taylor. I have a cutting from The London Times dated November 7th 1805. Mr Taylor is mentioned. The news of Nelson's Victory/ Death must have just been received because the cast did a ' hasty but elegant compliment to the memory of Nelson'. 'the front of the picture was filled by Mr Taylor & the principle singers of the Theatre' I have contacted Covent Garden & they sent me a history of the theatre which seems to have been destroyed by fire in 1808. It was of course rebuilt but I think any early records may have been destroyed. Please can anyone advise me where to look? Many thanks. Shirley
The R.O.H. didn't become an opera house until 1847. Before that it was known as Covent Garden Theatre. The "singers " in your clip were probably members of the cast of whichever play was being performed on that night. It might have been a play with music but not an opera. If you type in "Covent Garden Theatre" in Google you will find 70 pages of sites with reference to the theatre and you might strike lucky. Failing that try http://www.thestage.co.uk/ where you may find help. He was co manager of Sadler's Wells with one of my husband's ancestors (William Rogers) in 1836-37. Tom, like William and many others of their ilk was an actor, playwright and sometimes Theatre manager. They are mentoned in the book "The Story of Sadler's Wells 1683-1964" by Dennis Arundell published in 1965. Mary Bendigo Australia <mairibeth@iprimus.com.au> http://home.iprimus.com.au/mairibeth/
