Hi Everyone I am new to the list and the following is info on the person I am researching. It is long so please bear with me!! I am researching Charles James NUGENT b/c 1810 place NK d 1876 age 66 London St Giles Charles, who gave his address as St Anne's London, married Mary Sidden from Rochester Kent in 1839. Her parents appear to have been wealthy and Charles described himself as a Gentlemen on the marriage cert. >From the baptismal places of their 11 children the couple appear to have spent a few years in Surrey before moving to 5 Suffolk Place in London were they lived for many years. Later they lived in Bedford St near Covent Garden then Montague St near Holborn The birth certs of some of his children list Charles's job as- Commercial Clerk. Secretary to Her Majesty's Theatre and Theatre Manager. I have done a google search and found two refs. to a Mr Nugent in relationship to theatres on the Charles Dickens dictionary of London website. Both are quotes from The Era dated late 1850/60's One mentions Her Majesty's and the other the New Holborn Amphitheatre. Appearances would suggest that Charles never left London however I simply cannot find him on any census with the exception of the 1851 were I found a confusing entry for part of his family just listing some of the younger children and three servants, but no sign of Charles, Mary or their older children. I have checked entries for Theatres were I could find them but apart from a night watchman no one else was listed. Please can anyone give me some information on the life of a Theatre manager? I gather the season for Her Majesty's ran up to July but would mangers or secretaries have been mobile like the actors and other performers? Was it a well paid job as the places Charles lived appear to be fairly upmarket? Are there any useful web-sites to search as I don't live near london? If you haven't nodded off after all that!!- thanks for any help you can give regards MOIRA
