Charlotte Cooper, AKA "Mademoiselle Sylvia", born in Battersea in 1872, was an underwater performer. It is reported that she could stay under water for long periods of time, all the while, eating, smoking, and swimming under the rungs of a chair while her waist long hair trailed behind. She worked with "The Professor" (was this Professor Beckwith?) starting about 12-years-old. She is supposed to have been taken by Barnum to Europe and was in the Freak Show along with Krao Farini, the "Ape woman" with whom she became great friends. I have a picture of Mademoiselle Sylvia along side of another girl, both dressed in tights. Charlotte married Joseph Johnson and came to Canada in 1907 to settle finally in Hamilton Ontario.
