When you looked in the census, did you do a neighbour search? I thought it might show a theatre but I didn't have time to do a complete one for Newton-in-Makerfield. However, further down the same street as your Palmers, in three other houses, were: Lucy Johnson - actress Thomas and Elizabeth Shorrocks - comedian and wife Henry and Mary Montague - comedian and wife Quite a group!
