    3. Hi listers, Having read some of the listers memories especially Marjorie and Walter's in Nz natives of Cleveleys, my home town. I spoke to my mum (who is still there) of her and my dads memories of around 1940's and 1950's. Spelling might be something to be desired and memories vague, but here goes!! My Mother remembers the SUNDAY CONCERTS held after the war in the PALACE next to the Tower where the Ballroom had glass panels in the floor, "ladies beware". Some artistes she remembers are BENJOMINO GIGLO a tenor singer and IMA SUMAK a peruvian singer who sang a song call "Virgin to the Sun gods". She sang in 3 octaves. JOHNNY WEISMULLER also did a season at the DERBY BATHS after the war where they did sincronized swimming and diving displays. My Grandad TOM WHITE was in charge of "Tony" the band leader on NORTH PIER in the Sun lounge and Pavillion. He was also the assistant Pier manager. My other Grandpa was STEPHAN WIECZOREK (WESTMORE) was the MC in the Ballroom on CENTRAL PIER and assistant behind the stage. He was given "Keyboard style" cufflinks from WINIFRED ATTWELL for looking after her so well and her famous honky tonk piano. My Grandmother Marjorie Westmore was in the booking office of the same pier. LAWRENCE WRIGHT used to present "ON WITH THE SHOW" on the pier and sold sheet music for 6d. from all the hit shows in Blackpool. HENRY HALL was another impressario who put on the shows especially "THOSE WERE THE DAYS" . My parents remember GERTIE GUITANA and GEORGE ELLIOT "the chocolate covered coon" as he announced himself ( which of course today is not politically correct) but in those days there was nothing wrong with it. If anyone else has more memories that might help fellow listers please let us know.

    3. The Peruvian sing to whom you refer, Yma Sumac, was, allegedly, a jewess from Brooklyn called Amy Camus (Yma Sumac backwards, like Dylan Thomas's village in "Under Milkwood", Llareggub. I musn't swear on list so spell that backwards for yourselves) I bought a double CD of Yma Sumac only last week, for nostalgic reasons. Best wishes Josephine Allen Kemper ----- Original Message ----- From: adrienne <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, June 01, 2001 8:13 PM Subject: [THEATRE-UK] MORE MEMORIES OF BLACKPOOL > Hi listers, > Having read some of the listers memories especially Marjorie and Walter's in Nz natives of Cleveleys, my home town. 3. Hullo, it's Josephine again. The Tenor Singer "BENJOMINO GIGLO", was that really his name? i.e. a comedy act, or was it perhaps Beniamino Gigli, arguably one of the world's greatest tenors? He retired in 1956 and died in 1957 at the age of 67, I didn't know that he had sung in Blackpool. Does your mother remember when, by any chance? For anyone who is interested there is a web site about Gigli http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/1450/gigli.html There are many other sites, but mostly in Italian or German. When he was singing at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in Tosca, they required a boy soprano to sing the part of the Shepherd Boy. After weeding out the best six of 200, Gigli, himself, auditioned them and chose my second cousin, James Moran, to sing the part. I am a retired opera singer myself, it runs in the family! Josephine Allen Kemper Searching Joseph Grimaldi connections, allegedly an ancestor of mine. ----- Original Message ----- From: Josef Kemper <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, June 01, 2001 9:26 PM Subject: Re: [THEATRE-UK] MORE MEMORIES OF BLACKPOOL > The Peruvian sing to whom you refer, Yma Sumac, was, allegedly, a jewess > from Brooklyn called Amy Camus (Yma Sumac backwards, like Dylan Thomas's > village in "Under Milkwood", Llareggub.
