    1. [THEATRE-UK] Newton in Makerfield -- Theatre??
    2. Dave Jassie
    3. Hi Vin, I have an 1875 map of the area around Newton (in Makerfield)(-le-Willows) and it is referred to as Newton in Makerfield. The 1881 Census gives the place that name also, but the locals appeared to prefer to be recorded as being born in Newton-le-Willows. The number of residences recorded on the 1881 Newton in Makerfield Census is just over 2070. I have noticed while extracting the 'Entertainers' from the 1881 census that the existence of a theatre was recorded by the enumerator if there was one in his/her area. There is no mention of a theatre in Newton. Perhaps the people you referred to were just lodging there and working in Wigan, Warrington, St. Helens or somewhere else close by where there would have been a theatre.
