Janice has very kindly offered to look for your relatives in the book described below. Please reply to her directly at [email protected] Dear Dave, The book I have is 'The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in Gilbert and Sullivan Operas: A Record of Productions 1875-1961' complied by Cyril Rollins and R. John Witts, publ.1962. It is a most comprehensive listing of the performances, tours, actors, actresses, administrative, musical staff, composers, authors and librettists with cast list, performance dates in London, New York and provincial tours. It includes the performances of all shows from the days when the company was called the Comedy Opera Company and encompasses all the operas, including those NOT by Gilbert and Sullivan. For example, if your Great Uncle was a gent called Richard Smith, I could tell you that he was the stage manager in the No.1 Company's production of Patience in 1882 and also played the solicitor ( a non-singing role) in March. They were on tour from March 6 to December 16 and I could tell you which city they were in on any given night! He had toured as Stage Manager the year before with the B company and Pirates of Penzance. What a life! No more that three weeks anywhere from January to December! A lovely reference book and I will be happy to do any lookups Janice Toowoomba Dave Jassie - List Administrator THEATRE-UK [email protected] Greetings from Lincoln, England
