    3. Hi all, I just thought a few of you might be interested in this site. I sent it once before but can't remember seeing it on the list.....so might have hit the wrong button.......its definitely the keyboard and not the nut behind the keyboard. It shows footage of different people in the theatre which you can look up by name. I found our Clarice Mayne on there. www.britishpathe.com/index.cfm Regards Pam from Adelaide Australia Life is not measured by the number of breathes we take, But by the moments that take our breath away. 3. Ray & Joe housed their amazing collection of theatrical memorabilia in an Edwardian house in Sydenham. I went there to visit them once, to ask what they had about Joseph Grimaldi (an 'ancestor' of mine, allegedly) and one of them told me I had a look of Grimaldi. Has anyone ever SEEN a picture of Grimaldi???? Paper bag over the head for a week! They were promised the top floor of The Mansion in Beckenham Place Park, now a Golf centre, but sadly one of them died before they could move in. Then they discovered that the glass roof was leaking badly and by the time that was repaired the other one had died. Altogether a very sad story. I was very privileged to meet them. The Mander & Mitchenson Theatre Collection is one of the finest collections of theatre memorabilia in the world. Based on the personal collection of two actors, Raymond Mander and Joe Mitchenson, it contains a wide-range of primary sources for the study of theatre history and music in all its connections with the theatre, and also functions as a picture library. As a matter of interest, searching for Mander & Mitchenson on Google throws up a large amount of other leads in theatre research. 3. LAUREN that was a great post .. bless you. Yes I'm hoping to get back for another session of beautiful Britain this coming summer. I must say that when I went into Blackpool last year I was a bit confused by the changes there. No Palace Varieties no Feldmans .. the Winter Gardens not the same. To one who knew Blackpool like the back of her hand .. I felt quite lost. Oh those wonderul times we had in those early days. I lived in Cleveleys as a little giel and remember the open ground before the Odeon was built in 1936 or 37. Deserted gypsy caravans were moved from there to make way. The Odeon was quite beautiful arto deco design and it became the venue for the Mickey Mouse Club where, I guess I was one of the first 'Mouseketeers' wonderful talent quests were held there. The Odeon today now called the Orion has not been changed in appearance and I was so pleased to be able to take pictures. Today it is a Leisure Centre with Bingo owned by my neice and her husband as is the 'Arena' on the front which before the war was where Charlie's Follies appeared every summer season. That is now called Olympia with a children's corner. The Savoy Cinema and coffee lounge is no longer there in Victoria Road, and the Pavilion Cinema went long ago. It started off as 'Beanlands' and it's cinema days were quite distinctly memorable for the corrugated iron construction of the building and not being able to hear a word when it was raining. We lived in Fleetwood for a few years and Blackpool was a very popular place with the fishermen when they came in from sea. A hot bath and best clothes on .. then with the missus or the girl friend it was off in a taxi to Blackpool to see a show. Names of the day were Wee Georgie Woods, George Formby, Arthur Askey, Kitty O'Shea, Our Gracie, Dave Morris, Rawitz and Landauer, Charlie Kunz, Ronnie Ronalde, Old Mother Riley and Kitty (Arthur Lucan and Kitty McShane), Forsythe, Seamon and Farrell, Anne Ziegler and Webster Booth, Josef Locke, Sandy Powell (Can you hear me Mother?), and on and on and on. The late Roy Castle a Cleveleys lad .. always a favourite of mine who sand and danced as a young lad on the friday night Charlie's Follies talent quests. Good mamories of wonderful entertainers. David ..Good to say hello again and I wish you the very, very best of everything in whatever you do. I bet there's some right good memories out there just waiting to be told .. and here we are just waiting to listen. Marjorie in New Zealand

    3. Hello everyone, Thanks for the kind words from Lauren and welcome again Marje, and a big hello to Neal,I finally have found an old copy of "British Music Hall"by Raymond Mander and Joe Mitchenson and I have to say I am facinated by the pictures and captions, spans the 1850's through to 1900's.Not a lot on my ancestor "Bessie Bellwood" but anyone wanting a look up let me know. Some more bad news about my search for information on Bessie, when in England in 1985 I was shown several pictures of Bessie by a cousin who had found them in our Grandmothers effects, when I asked "who is Bessie Bellwood"I was told that she was "a distant relative possibly a cousin"of Grans. Several years ago when I started to trace the family connection I contacted my cousin and asked if I could get copies of the pictures which as I remember were signed,no reply and I have asked several times since finding that Bessie was our Great Grandmothers sister, finally this week I received word from another cousin that the pictures were "given away" in 1987 and copies were never made!!! I will continue to search in the hopes that someone somewhere has other pictures of "Bessie". In the meantime if anyone wants a lookup let me know< Carole in Canada.

    3. Well Lauren you're making me blush :-) That's really nice of you to mention me. And even nicer of you to refer to me as "young". I'm not sure my girls would agree with you, but there you go :-) As you know, I'm not researching my family history as such, unlike a lot of other people on the list, but I am lucky enough to have a wealth of information left by my Dad, and it's really only in recent months that it's ever occurred to me that there might be other folk out there interested in it as well! If I happen to have something that's of interest to others, then I'm only too glad to share it. And coming across the copy of Who's Who for 1930 was a stroke of luck too. So, while I've got the floor, so to speak, I'll just remind folk of "where" (theatrically speaking) I'm coming from: if you're after information about a relation who was in the UK theatre roughly 1895-1955, particularly in musical comedy, panto, rep (to a certain extent), pierrots (to a certain extent), etc etc, then feel free to let me know the names of the people concerned. I can't guarantee that I'll be able to get back to you straight away, but if their name is mentioned in any of my Dad's stuff (which includes photos, programs, etc -- you all know the score -- as well as some written memoirs of the "earlier days"), then I'll happily pass it on as and when I come by any information. Having a list of people to look out for is always useful. And of course, if anyone comes across anything about my theatrical roots -- any Denches (apart from Judi!), Paul or Stella Dixon -- then I'd love to know whatever information you have. Well, I'm all emailed out now. Take care everyone, and have a nice weekend -- Neal

    1. [THEATRE-UK] PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT
    2. Hello all fellow thespians First of all I would like to say "Welcome back "Aunty Marje"! Who in the past has been a back bone of this List. With her lovely stories about Blackpool and Pierrots and bits of chit chat here and there. Tragically Marjoire lost her husband some 18 months ago and moved from one part of New Zealand to another to be near her daughter, been to England and is planning on another trip this May despite what troubles is going on in this world, for a Lady in her 70's I think this is wonderful. Good on Yer Marj!! I am certainly one looking forward to more of your "Chit Chats" and remineses of times long gone in the theatrical world of Blackpool and the Fylde. Another one is good old Josi!! She allways comes up trumps! I will allways be eternally grateful that she sorted out something that really bothered me about a piece of music that was played by a brass band! Not even visualising it could well have been an opera written by Mozart! I have certainly been educated by this truly amazing Lady. I also thank her for sending important urls to this site. She is always on the look out to help out with this site. One young lad only recently on board is Neal Dench, who has opened his heart to be helpful and unidated with requests should be thanked too! Neal and I have become really good pals, with our passion of Pierrots, Music Halls (THE BEST!! eh Neal?) and Tomatoes!! I think Neal has done a brilliant job in people's requests and was very brave to annouce he would do look ups. The four books I have been reading are not well indexed at all, especially the most recent Beside the Seaside written by Bill Pertwee, it has no index at all!! So to do any look ups for anyone is impossible! But as I have been on this list for quite a while now I do look out and send when I read something important that might just "Make Someones Day!"! One I did send too only the other week was to Carole who is desperatly looking for anything on her Gr Aunt Bessie Bellwood, I got a most lovely email for Carole, she was absolutly thrilled. Carole I will certainly look out for Bessie, she has me intrigued too. What a character! So when I am going through this long, long list of books I will certainly bear you in mind, as I know you will be so happy, and I love making people happy. Especially ones who are grateful. The last but not the least, I so want to thank Dave our list owner for producing this wonderful place to be. Dave has had his ups and downs but still in the most theatrical way "The Show Goes On" !. He has given us all hope and a wonderful web site. God love yer Dave! Thanks for being there! Your are a Wonderful Guy! Lauren
