    3. Carole, Thanks for the offer of a look up. Could you please see if there is any mention of a Madam Rolls (or Rowles) who was a pianist around the turn of the century. 3. Hello Carol, I did find reference to a Mr PREECE in "The Melody Lingers On",it appears that the Mr PREECE mentioned was the proprieter of several music halls. "At the Grapes(Southwark Bridge Road)the free and easy had developed into a very good standard of variety entertainment, becoming a hall in the early 'fortiesand called The Surrey Music Hall,it bore the title but not quite the style. In addition to its entertainment,it boasted a picture gallery which its proprieter,Richard PREECE,had purchased from a French instrumentalist named Phillipe, whom he had brought over as an attraction from Paris" "Eventually,The Surrey Gardens were opened with a building also called the Surrey Music Hall. The then manager of the original place of that name,a Mr PREECE,renamed his hallThe Winchester. It remained running as a genuine music hall until about 1878 when it was pulled down". Hope this is of some help to you, kind regards, Carole ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carol Preece" <docpreece@mindspring.com> To: <THEATRE-UK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 17, 2003 7:12 AM Subject: Re: [THEATRE-UK] New Book > Dear Carole, I mistakenly typed "18th" instead of "19th" century for the > time period that the Preeces were active in the London/Southwark music > halls. 3. Hi Carole, Nice to hear from you again. I have to say it's unlikely. My Dad was born in 1892, and although his first appearance on stage was probably in 1896 (seriously!), it sounds like it's just a little too early. I'll keep a note of her name though. 3. The R.O.H. didn't become an opera house until 1847. Before that it was known as Covent Garden Theatre. The "singers " in your clip were probably members of the cast of whichever play was being performed on that night. It might have been a play with music but not an opera. If you type in "Covent Garden Theatre" in Google you will find 70 pages of sites with reference to the theatre and you might strike lucky. Failing that try http://www.thestage.co.uk/ where you may find help. 3. > The Oxford Companion to the Theatre lists just one child for Sir John Martin-Harvey.She is Muriel and she also went on the stage. Exactly. There were two children: Muriel and Michael, both acted. Muriel married three times and had two children of her own (one born during a Zeppelin raid). Michael had no children. Sir John is my first cousin twice removed, and according to all the written records I know of only had two children, neither of whom appear in my new contact's line. Can anyone help me out with info about George Reasons Haggett, or his son Aubrey George Haggett who I'm told appeared on the London stage during the twentieth. Aubrey, I'm told, also used the name Aubrey Martin-Harvey. Chris -- Chris Goddard Plymouth, U.K www.webrarian.co.uk
