Can anyone tell me about the Tree family of actors in the 19th & 20th century ? Lynn Humphreys
Hello Everyone Its been so quite again on this list I thought I would just say "HAPPY EASTER" TO YOU ALL! I did order a book from my local library called Music Halls by Roy Hudd, unfortunatly it was reference only, so I had to sit and have a quick look there one hour I had to spare. Might be of interest to some of you on the list, no index though! Though I did note some names people our looking for, Clarice Mayne was one, I did see a piccie of Bessie Carole! She was very attractive wasn't she? I expect you have that one?! But there was a big feature for one chap who was looking for a certain gentleman called Dan Leno, I think he was quite a favourite of Roy's. All the best to you all, Lauren
My great-uncle Charlie was born [Frederick William}Charles Laurie in Bengal India in 1880 to a Scottish family. But he sang opera under a more Italian sounding name---CARLOS LAURIO. Nothing is known of his career, but he had 2 children by a second wife, an Italian operatic singer. He or they may even have performed at La Scala. These 2 kids came unexpectedly to stay with my grandmother Kathleen Smith in Much Haddam ,north east of London. {Kathleen was Charlies sister] likely in the early 1920s. Their names possibly Roberto and Inez. Think the stay was brief. The kids would be now in their 90s Charlie last heard fom living in the east part of London in to at least the 1950s or 60s, I note there was an Opera House in Calcutta. Perhaps his early training was there, and then his years in Italy? Need any suggestions as to where I might research him or his kids. Just a final note. There are 2 very fine male voices from his line in our family ---and both have quite an attraction to the stage, but are keeping their `day jobs`. Any clues appreciated Kitty
Hi Sue This is quite a good site, though the warnings about not posting until you've read all the old messages are a little bit over the top! (Especially when there's no search facility) The only real reason I'm following this up is to ask if you noticed that there were actually TWO references to Maskelyne: the one near the top about the guy writing the book, but also one lower down asking if anyone remembers Maskelyne and Devant. If you remember, Devant was the other guy mentioned in the Maud Gill book I found the reference to Maskelyne in recently. Anyway, just thought I'd make sure you knew about it. You probably saw it already. From: "Karen Bain" <Karen.Bain@huntly1.demon.co.uk> Sent in error to: <THEATRE-UK-L-request@rootsweb.com> I have a GUncle who was born 1908 Aberdeen Scotland, but moved down to London and worked in the theatre in London in his 20's first on set designs but then bacame an actor. He was called Lawrence Stewart but went by the name Larry, and was in Pinewood Films in the 30's perhaps 40's.He had a part in 'The Red Shoes'. His career was going well, until he was struck in the face by a horse's hoof in a film, and consequently left with a scar down one side of his face. After this leading man was never going to come to him. He died early in London after suffering a premature stroke. Can anyone help me with any information about his work? Thanks very much in advance. Dear Carole Thank you for the information concerning Augustus Harris. Most interesting. Kristin.
Well folks, I want to thank you for all your help and suggestions. The out come so far is that I was able to get a message directly through to Rose HILL. Thank you Chris. I was disappointed, though not surprized that she was not interested. Perfectly understandable. "Thank you for your email which was passed to Rose. Unfortunately she does not feel up to dealing with correspondence at this time." Well, I can now say I tried and will not pursue this route any further. As for Terry.....I am still looking. I will be writing to the address that Sue came up with....thankyou Sue :-) Maybe it's him. Wish me luck. Thanks again Jen
Daisy Dormer's name is mentioned but nothing specific other than she was a star. The Egbert Brothers have an extensive mention and as you must know they were comedians, reported to also have made the Shah of Persia laugh,"he sat glumly through most of the bill, but the Brothers Egbert made him smile" "Almost in a class by themselves shine those two great eccentrics. The Brothers Egbert,Seth and Albert, who were known far and wide as "The Happy Dustman".the author goes into detail about his own involvement with them in a gag. He also goes on to tell the tale of Jimmy White the famous millionaire when at the height of his fame and fortune hired them as waiters as a joke to serve at a dinner party for a crowd of wealthy men,and the Brothers Egbert surpassed themselves with their comedic service. this is all that is reported,no information of a personal nature. kind regards, Carole. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sara Pountney" <sara.pountney@ntlworld.com> To: <THEATRE-UK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 22, 2003 2:02 PM Subject: [THEATRE-UK] Carole Cumber - "New Book"! > Carole would you please do a look up for the following. > > Daisy Dormer and Egbert Brothers. > > Many thanks > > Sara > >
Sorry for the delay in sending this Kristin, but here goes with what is written, "Charles BERNARD's last job was as acting manager for the Royal English Opera House, now the Palace, when Sir Augustus HARRIS took it over from D'Oyly Carte." "Then that complete man of the Theatre,Sir Augustus HARRIS,"Druriolanus"came leaping into the breach. He had always wanted to run a Music Hall and here was his chance".this refers to the Palace Theatre of Varietes, this goes on for two pages describing the acts etc:,his takeover was a failure and he retired to "Hanwell",whence he never emerged. It seems that Gus Harris as he is refered too was much involved in Opera, there is a date for an opening of his December 21st 1887. He was also the Honorable President of the Music Hall Benevolent Fund started in 1888,Sir Augustus Harris alsowas the first to introduce music hall stars to pantomine. that's all that I have managed to find, hope that it is of some help to you, kind regards, Carole. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kristin" <kristn@globalnet.co.uk> To: <THEATRE-UK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 21, 2003 5:22 PM Subject: [THEATRE-UK] Re: New book request/HARRIS > Dear Carole > > Thank you for your prompt response. Jen I had a look at the Internet Movie DataBase at http://us.imdb.com/ . Terry Winter is credited with three films including Scrooge. Unfortunately no agent's name is given. I searched the electoral rolls at http://www.192.com and only found one Terry Winter listed in London. Address : 32 WELL CLOSE LONDON SW16 2AH No phone number - probably ex-directory. Worth a letter even if it turns out not to be your cousin. A quick search for "Terry Winter"+actor on Google threw up some potential links that it might be worth checking out. HTH - let me know how you get on. Hello, I'm currently reading a book about Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1809) who wrote "School for Scandal" and bought the Drury Lane Theatre with partners in 1776. There is a reference to the fact that Sheridan and his partners bought the "patent" and I wondered what this was?? Regards Ken Grubb, Cheltenham, Glos.

Hi, I am hoping to learn more about my ancestor, LYSANDER THOMPSON. His dob was 1815, in Yorkshire, I believe. All I know is from an obituary of his son, Lysander F. Thompson who was an actor in the U.S. in the late 1800s. It stated that the British Lysander was a much better actor than his son and described him as "the famous Yorkshire dialect comedian" but I don't know what that is. It also stated that he worked at Burton's Theatre in the '50s. I would love to know more. Any information about either Lysander Thompson would be appreciated since I have not been able to find anything on the web or in my library. Dear Jen I found three London-born Rose Hills in the GRO indexes for June 1914: Rose M HILL (mother's maiden name: HUDSON) Wandsworth 1d 1163 Rose L HILL (TURTON) Edmonton 3 a 1399 Rose L HILL (LYNCH) Marylebone 1 a 878 All you have to do now, is find out where THE Rose Hill was born! Best wishes Chris
Since you're all so smart here :-) I might as well ask if anyone knows anything about my cousin Terry WINTER. Terry was an actor, though not as prolific as Rose HILL. He was born in the 50's in Reading. Not sure what he did other than a part in Scrooge and I think a movie or two and some stage acting. Last I heard he was living in London. Any leads? Cheers Jen
Thanks Chris! Thanks everyone who replied. What an interesting list! How do you get the mother's maiden name????? Is the GRO different from the BMD index? Josi wrote: > Don't know what happened to her > voice, maybe she preferred acting to singing. She did a bit of both in the Henry Reed/Donald Swann radio play "Emily Butter", first broadcast in 1954 and enteted for the prestigious Prix Italia. (I've mentioned this to Jen already). Thanks for the background, though, Josi. In that respect Rose is like Marjorie Westbury who is far better remembered as a radio actress (especially as "Steve" in the Paul Temple series) but who also sang. She was 'Elsa', the Austrian opera singer, in "Emily Butter". In the fictional opera "Emily Butter" the fictional character of Elsa sang Emily herself, while Rose Hill sang the role of Mrs Elizabeth Thwaite. Emily is a shop assistant in a large department store and Mrs Thwaite the shoplifter who the plain clothes "police-lady, Miss Catherine Slot" sets out to catch. Miss Slot is sung by a bass, "the only thing possibly suggesting her profession being a neat blue helmet with silver spike which she is wearing tilted slightly forward upon her head". Rose Hill, as Mrs Thwaite, had the aria "I'm just looking round", followed by the recitative: "Somebody without me noticing has slipped into my shopping-bag: four tablets of soap, a powder compact, a set of doyleys, an electric iron, a pair of blankets, half a dozen pocket handkerchiefs, a small bottle of Jeyes' fluid, and a very l o n g - p l a y i n g g r a m o p h o n e r e c o r d. And sometimes I wonder how they can have got there, when all I have been doing... is... just looking round". Mrs T is also involved in the "Great Recognition Scene", where it is revealed that Emily is *not* her daughter. Enough of this rambling... Chris -- Chris Goddard Plymouth, U.K www.webrarian.co.uk
