I am in the process of starting a new section of my website where transcripts may be posted of family letters relating to UK families, either sent internally in UK or from/to other parts of the World. I have already tested the interest in the idea on two of my mailing list and found considerable interest and a number of people willing to share their family letters. The idea behind the site is that many family letters include references to unknown relatives or unrelated people who might be known to some other researcher. I have, myself, been the recipient of such information in relation to my own family and my wife's, and it has proved extremely useful in my research. In addition some of these letters contain information on local occurrences, views on national events and other information of general historical interest. Some of us may also have old postcards collected for their picture side which include names, addresses and short notes to family and friends. Details of these would also be welcome for inclusion. If anyone has any views or wishes to make a contribution of a transcript please get in touch with me direct at 1017043110@compuserve.com for more information. I will be away from home from 9 June until 13 June but will reply on my return. Bob Sanders Cardiff Wales
Hi Everyone I am new to the list and the following is info on the person I am researching. It is long so please bear with me!! I am researching Charles James NUGENT b/c 1810 place NK d 1876 age 66 London St Giles Charles, who gave his address as St Anne's London, married Mary Sidden from Rochester Kent in 1839. Her parents appear to have been wealthy and Charles described himself as a Gentlemen on the marriage cert. >From the baptismal places of their 11 children the couple appear to have spent a few years in Surrey before moving to 5 Suffolk Place in London were they lived for many years. Later they lived in Bedford St near Covent Garden then Montague St near Holborn The birth certs of some of his children list Charles's job as- Commercial Clerk. Secretary to Her Majesty's Theatre and Theatre Manager. I have done a google search and found two refs. to a Mr Nugent in relationship to theatres on the Charles Dickens dictionary of London website. Both are quotes from The Era dated late 1850/60's One mentions Her Majesty's and the other the New Holborn Amphitheatre. Appearances would suggest that Charles never left London however I simply cannot find him on any census with the exception of the 1851 were I found a confusing entry for part of his family just listing some of the younger children and three servants, but no sign of Charles, Mary or their older children. I have checked entries for Theatres were I could find them but apart from a night watchman no one else was listed. Please can anyone give me some information on the life of a Theatre manager? I gather the season for Her Majesty's ran up to July but would mangers or secretaries have been mobile like the actors and other performers? Was it a well paid job as the places Charles lived appear to be fairly upmarket? Are there any useful web-sites to search as I don't live near london? If you haven't nodded off after all that!!- thanks for any help you can give regards MOIRA
Hello List I am new to this list, so I thought I would post a quick note to introduce myself and my interests. My ancestor was the proprietor of 'Maus Excelsior Circus' which travelled the UK in the mid to late 1800s. Then the family [around 1900?] changed its name to 'The Dayton Family' and toured the theatres of the country as musicians and acrobats etc. If anyone has any interests posters, or information on any of these, I would be grateful to hear from you. During the war when my father was on leave,he took my mother & I to the Wood Green Empire to see a show which I have always believed was called Thanks for the Memory. That night we were bombed out so I would very much like to know when that was. I was about 4 at the time so it would probably have been about 1943/44. Does anyone know where I can find out what shows were put on at the Wood Green Empire at that time, and whether there was a show by that name and indeed whether Bob Hope was in it? TIA Maureen
Hello Whirligigers! You registered to be informed of updates to the WHIRLIGIG 1950's BRITISH TV AND RADIO NOSTALGIA site. May 2003 Newsletter. Sadly, this month we received news of the death of Michaela Denis at the age of 88 in Mombasa, Kenya. She was, with her husband Armand, a pioneer of wildlife programmes on television. Their first British television series, Filming Wild Animals, was shown in 1954, the same year in which David Attenborough embarked on Zoo Quest. One television series followed another: Filming in Africa (1955), On Safari (1957-59 and 1961-65), Michaela and Armand Denis (for ATV, 1955-58 ) and Safari to Asia (1959-61). You can find her Daily Telegraph obituary with further information here: http://www.dailytelegraph.com/news/main.jhtml? &xml=/news/2003/05/12/db1202.xml You can also find out more about their wildlife series and watch a video clip on the 'On Safari' page of Whirligig: http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/tv/adults/other/onsafari.htm This month sees the release of the final batch of video clips which I had been storing up. Hi folks, While things are quiet, someone may have connections with the people below who I have found at 2 addresses on the Lincoln St. Martin 1861 census. Staying at 15 Grantham Street (which is situated to the rear of the present day Theatre Royal) ~ Clinton Sarah boardr S F 25 Comedian MDX Shoreditch Clinton Ellen boardr s f 23 Comedian MDX Stepney And staying at number 3, Kings Arms Yard were the following ~ Holt James lodger S M 41 Professor of Music Manchester Thomas Edward lodger M M 41 Vocalist Manchester King George Frederick lodger S M 20 Professor of Music LAN Morrison Robert lodger M M 36 Professor of Music LAN Preston Conelley William Henry lodger W M 31 Comedian Manchester They all seemed to be appearing at the theatre and it would be interesting to discover what was on at the time. A little bit of history about Lincoln Theatre Royal ~ In 1764 a new Theatre was formed to replace the 'Drury Lane' theatre which was built c1731. Mr. William Herbert, who had been manager of the former theatre since 1750, formed the new theatre in the Kings Arms Yard off Butchery Street, which is now called Clasketgate and just consisted of a few small buildings. The 'new' theatre was named ‘The Theatre Royal’ by Mr. Herbert and he continued to manage it until about 1783. The Theatre Royal was taken over by James Whitely, and together with William Herbert’s Players, the theatre continued until 1806 when demand was such that it was rebuilt on the same site and lasted until 1892. An enormous explosion rocked the Theatre during the night of November 26/27th and a fire completely destroyed it. The leaseholder at the time was Mr. Ross Challis, and he, with the help of London architects Bertie Crewe and W.G.R. Sprague, designed and created a new, even bigger Theatre. This now had a capacity for 840 people, a large stage with no supporting pillars to block peoples’ view and plush tip-up seating. Access was still from Kings Arms Yard. Mr. Challis became the sole owner and called the theatre the ‘New Theatre Royal’, opening with W.S. Penley’s Company from London’s Globe Theatre on December 18th 1893, performing ‘Charley’s Aunt’. Hi Rita and others who kindly replied on- and off-group. I actually know quite a lot about Marie after she became famous and it is the early period of her life that seems to be unrecorded in any source that I have come across so far. She made her first stage appearance at the age of 5 (1878) in London as "Baby Chester" and this epithet is one of a number of mysteries I am trying to solve. My motive by the way is family history - Marie and I have a common ancestor. Kendall was actually a stage name (Marie was born Marie Holyome)but her descendants kept the name going and it became the family's "official" name. The late Kay Kendall (movie star and wife of Rex Harrison) was Marie's granddaughter and my nth cousin. As far as I have ascertained so far, the only Kendalls descended from Marie who went into 'showbiz' are: Richard & Harry - early years of 20th century - brothers of Marie. On stage performers and management. Terry & Pat - son and daughter of Marie. Song and dance team in 1920's and 30's. Quite famous and did a Royal Command Performance in London Kay - daughter of Terry Kim - Kay's sister - still alive in USA Cavan - male movie star of some moderate repute. The above may be of interest to someone. Hi Rita and John My 1930 Who's Who has entries for three Kendalls, though none seem to be the ones you are looking for: there's Dame Madge (Margaret) Kendall (huge entry for her), Henry Kendall, and John Kendall, who is listed as a dramatic author. Greetings to all........ As a very new subscriber to this group I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has any knowledge of the early career of Marie Kendall who was at the peak of her UK music hall career at the end of the 19th/beginning 20th centuries. I know a fair bit about her from 1900 on but I would like to know about her very earliest stage appearances and (if possible) her family background. Many Thanks John Stevens
Hi there Whirligigers! You registered to be informed of updates to the WHIRLIGIG 1950's BRITISH TV AND RADIO NOSTALGIA site. April 2003 Newsletter. We lead with the news that Muffin the Mule is to return to BBC TV in 2005 in animated form: Muffin Trots back after 60 years out to grass. Muffin the Mule was the first children's TV character, making his BBC premiere on 20 October 1946. Hugely successful in the 50s and 60s and now very much part of English heritage, he is due to return to the screens in late 2005 or early 2006, just in time for his 60th birthday. Maverick Entertainment, who bought the rights to Muffin in January, will initially produce twenty-six, 10 minute episodes, in partnership with the BBC and production will commence later this year. The revival is likely to see him reunited with some of his old friends including the bossy penguin Mr. Peregrine Esquire, a shy Louise the Lamb, Oswald the Ostrich and Willie the Worm. For more information use this link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/2952533.stm If you want more information about Maverick Entertainment here is the link: http://www.maverickentertainment.co.uk/Site/Company/News.htm I have added some information about the 1955 series on ITV about 'The Adventures of Noddy': http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/tv/children/other/other.htm#Noddy Also the usual round of new video clips (of which I am now running out very quickly). Here are this month's selections: Firstly, a clip from the 'Billy Bunter' series which starred the late Gerald Campion. At one time this series was so popular that it was transmitted at 5.25pm for children and again two hours later for the parents! You will find the clip on this page: http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/tv/children/bunter/bunter.htm Next, the title sequence from 'The Lone Ranger'. A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty "Hi Ho Silver!" The Lone Ranger. "Hi Ho Silver, away!" With his faithful Indian companion Tonto, the daring and resourceful masked rider of the plains, led the fight for law and order in the early west. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. The Lone Ranger rides again! http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/tv/children/westerns/loneranger.htm Then, a short title clip from the programme Lunchbox. Lunchbox circa 1956, was a light-hearted sing-along show presented by Noele Gordon with Jerry Allen and his Trio providing the music. http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/tv/adults/other/lunchbox.htm Finally, a clip with a bit of lighthearted banter between Billy Cotton and Russ Conway who was a regular on Billy's shows along with Alan Breeze, Kathie Kay and Doreen Stephens. The Billy Cotton Bandshow was a highly popular variety show featuring what seemed like an inexhaustible 50 minutes of non-stop song, dance and comedy. You'll find the clip on this page. When you arrive, click on the right hand picture of Mr. Cotton: http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/tv/adults/other/cotton.htm I have also added a short bit about 'The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickock' which starred Guy Madison as U.S. Marshal James Butler 'Wild Bill' Hickock and Andy Devine as Jingles. Jingles described Hickock as "the bravest, strongest, fightingest U.S. Marshal in the whole West." And that's about it: he beat up all the bad guys and somehow kept his good looks. You'll find an audio clip here: http://www.whirligig- tv.co.uk/tv/children/westerns/westerns.htm#wildbill On the Radio site, I have added a new page about the programme 'Ignorance is Bliss' which was: The crazy answer to the Quiz Game craze: "Where Ignorance is Bliss, Tis folly to be wise, It's better to be ignorant like me . . ." The series began in 1946 with Stewart MacPherson the fast-talking Canadian sports commentator as question-master. Harold Berens was the cockney ignoramus ('What a geezer!'), Michael Moore the monocled upper-class twit ('I have a poem, Mr MacPherson!'), and Gladys Hay the fat lady ('Oh, he's nice, isn't he! What's your first name, ducks?') who provided the regular routine: 'Now we're back to Miss Hay again!'. Sid Millward and his Nitwits 'provide the tumult when the shouting dies'. The series continued into the '50s and you can find out more here: http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/radio/ignorance.htm There is a new audio clip taken from a 50's 'Any Questions' here: http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/radio/other.htm#anyquestions and the signature tune from 'What do you Know?' the precursor to 'Brain of Britain' here: http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/radio/other.htm#whatdoyouknow Finally, the 'My Word!' page has been updated with new pictures and information: http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/radio/myword.htm That's all for April. I'll see you with more news and clips next month. =================================================================== As usual, if you think of anything that is missing or incorrect, have any more information about the programmes featured or just want to share your memories, do drop me a line to terry@whirligig-tv.co.uk Alternatively place them on the Message Board which I monitor daily at: http://go.ezboard.com/bwhirligigtv Cheerio!
