Hi, I've just been having a look at the 1881 British Census CDs and it occurred to me that it could be a useful source for locating theatrical folk. So, I have the following which I will be only too pleased to search for your ancestors - 1881 British Census and National Index 1851 Devon, Norfolk & Warwick Census Mormon Immigration Index (1840-1890) UK Deeds Index Database (1450-1950) UK Wills Index (1700-1800) Titanic Passenger List (1912) Vital Records British Isles (1538-1888) Regards, Dave Jassie - List Administrator of THEATRE-UK and JASSIE mailing lists. Hi List Has anyone heard of Louisa Ann Larcher ( Louisa De Larchey) her acting name. She was the daughter of Andrew Larcher and Sarah Garton. London England. Regards Greta New Zealand
Hi Dave, Thanks for your reply. Theatre implied anything and everything surrounding *the business* BUT you never know :-) My G-uncle was M J LANDA (1873-1947),a Jewish playwright. He was politically quite outspoken and wrote a great book called *The Jew in Drama* which he used to deal with "The Shylock Myth" (trying to breakdown Jewish stereotyping in the theatre). He and his wife (Annie Gertrude, nee GORDON, 1881-1941, AKA Aunt Naomi of Jewish World Children's pages) wrote plays mostly together and they were usually short one-act plays which were curtain raisers to the *main event* I have reviews from "Red Ria" a play performed as a curtain raiser to Shaw's Candida at the Gaiety in Manchester. I would like to get other reviews and build up a better picture of his life/work. I am finding it hard to know where to begin really. I got to Red Ria from something else (probably his obit). I need some pointers as to what to do, how to narrow a search down, what to look in etc. Thanks Best Wishes, Sherry Landa (Salford, Lancs) [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: Dave Jassie [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 12 May 2001 13:33 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [THEATRE-UK] Playwrights Hi Sherry, I think you may be in the ideal place. Hi, I am trying to find out about a Carrie Holt born 1883 who died 1968 in Clayton area of Bradford. A family member has told me that she was on the stage probably as a dancer. She may have performed at the Bradford Alhambra. She was the daughter of James Holt. Carrie married Joseph Holland in 1903 in Bradford.and had 3 children. She lived in the Clayton area all her life and worked as a boxmaker. If anyone has heard of Carrie/ Carolyne Holt/Holland I would love to hear from them. Many thanks Pat
Greetings listers! My Grandfather Abram (Abe?) COLLINGWOOD born in Sunderland 1894 and according to family history was a child performer on what,( I am guessing here) was the Old Music Hall stage around the turn of the century in the North East of England. This was substantiated by an old photograph of him in his costume, his act I believe was whistling and tap dancing? Unfortunately the photo, a valuable piece of family history, inadvertently got thrown out in the trash about 20yrs ago!!?. Does anyone know of any records or if there is any collection of billboards of that time or Era in the hope that his name may be recorded somewhere? Anyone? Anything? Even maybe a sympathetic "bin man" who may have salvaged a family heirloom. Regards from a very Summery Pennsylvania.........Susan [email protected]
Hello, I am really just checking I am in the right place. Been a bit busy and so briefly read the *blurb* for the list. If I am wrong, please forgive. Am I in the right place for playwrights? My great-uncle and his wife wrote plays (amongst other things). Sometimes my great-uncle actually acted small parts in his own plays, but he wasn't an actor. Is this list for playwrights or just actors? If someone can confirm, I'll post/unsub as necessary. Sorry to be so dim... Best Wishes, Sherry Landa (Salford, Lancs) [email protected]
Hi Listers, We have a number of postcards sent by "Rose Tree" from various places in the USA during the period 1907 to 1912 to her relatives in Aylesbury - we assume she was working in the USA. We also have a business card giving her previous name as "Little Rosie Trenchard" a child actress and vocalist, also on the card is a reference to "Mr Percy William, The Fatal Wedding Co" which we take to be a reference to one of her stage performances and we have a photograph of her in the company. We also have a card indicating that she appeared at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. She must have worked in the UK but where? Daisy Trenchard was her sister and we have a business card giving her as a "Chorus commedienne" living at 13 Harcourt Avenue, Manor Park, London. Any information about these two sisters would be gratefully received. Best regards, Courtnay
Hi Listers, My wife's grandfather Harry Patrick BUSH had a strong connection with the Aylesbury Market Theatre but we wonder if anyone can give us more information about him. We understand that he worked on the building of the Theatre but when was that? We think it was around 1910 and that he "drove" a steam engine used on the site. He then got a job with the Theatre and we have been told that he installed the electric system in the Theatre but again we don't know when. On his marriage certificate in 1912 his occupation was given as theatrical stage assistant and we have a later business card that gives his title as theatre manager. We are totally stumped by Harry Patrick and would really love some info on him, Best regards, Courtnay
Hi, I thought I'd introduce myself to you all and hope you will do likewise. My name is Dave Jassie and I was born, bred and still living (just!!) in Lincoln, Lincolnshire about 1 mile from our spectacular cathedral. My theatrical interest is in my grandfather, Cairo Alexander Jassie, who is recorded as being an 'Actor' on his marriage certificate. He was married in Leeds, Yorkshire in 1909. Regards, Dave Jassie
Hello everybody, The number of subscribers to the list is growing steadily and I would like to take this opportunity of welcoming you all to YOUR list. I am hoping that the list will run smoothly and that I don't have to step in too much. I would ask that everyone be courteous to each other, and that if there are any problems, they are reported to me for action off-list. Please send any Virus warnings to me privately, and not to the list. If you do receive an e-mail with a suspicious attachment, DO NOT open it - delete it and then remove it from your 'Deleted Items' folder or equivalent. It is impossible to receive an attachment through any Rootsweb mailing list - it has probably been sent from another subscriber, but they will almost certainly be unaware that it has come from their computer.. The best thing to do is simply send them a polite e-mail informing them that they have a virus. Regards, Dave [email protected]
Hello Listers Grateful for any information on Wattie HILDYARD who I understand was a clown/comic in the London music hall TIA Peter Adams Essex Family Research Site http://www.bluehand.fsnet.co.uk
This may be old hat by now -- I've been away -- but "Nobody Loves a Fairy" was recorded by Tessie O'Shea and is available on the audio cassette "Music Hall Days" MMC 1031, issued by Music and Memories, Hays House, PO Box 61, Whitstable, Kent CT5 3RD. They may have a CD of the same collection.
